Star Wars: Crucible...Could This Finally Be...

It does seem kind suspicious how they're making such a big thing out of how it's something only the big three can handle. I definitely get a last big adventure vibe. I could see them taking more supporting, mentor roles in the future while the kids handle the majority of the running around the galaxy and fighting bad guys. That way they could still be taking an active role in the story, but we don't have a bunch of 80+ years out kicking ass, because I'm sorry but after a while it'll just be ridiculous.

I'd rather they have a reboot rather than having the "big three" fade into the background as mentor figures and finally dead ones. I've always prefered them over most of the new characters introduced in the post ROTJ era and I'm not interested in books that don't feature them much if at all. That and the post NJO books have been disappointments (and way too long and padded). After Legacy I'm seriously considering not buying any more than the ocassional book

Maybe "The Crucible" is a fountain of youth that the Big Three go into and get de-aged into being twenty-year olds again! :D

This would explain why Luke's Force Ghost in the Legacy comics looked like he was 20 :p ;)

I haven't had a problem with them deciding to age the characters and continue the story, as opposed to rebooting it, but what I have had some problems with is how Del Ray and Lucasfilm hasn't done as good a job as building up the new generation of characters to take over the novels.

Some of that fault lies at George Lucas's feet with his decision to eliminate Del Ray's emergent successor to Luke, but also some of the subsequent decisions to kill off some major characters. Also don't think that Jaina has been given enough of a push. And they sideline some cool characters like Lowbacca far too much. But I do give Del Ray credit for coming up with some interesting villains like the Yuuzhan Vong, Abeloth, and even Darth Caedus (in thought, if not execution).

And Del Ray has done some Bantam era, post-ROTJ books, while not a reboot, they have went back to earlier in the big three's careers before. I have to wonder if they won't continue to do so, especially once the space narrows between the novels and Legacy.

Though I do want to see what happens with Ben Skywalker, Jaina, Vestara, the Lost Tribe of Sith, etc., and would rather they continue the story than do a reboot.

Well the reason they have not built up the successors to take over should be clear. They have never had any intention of going that route.

The situation seems similar to DC Comics had with the Teen Titans. The characters got older and older over time. But their mentors in the JLA never really got older. While Dick Grayson has briefly become Batman it was never going to be permanent. So no matter the ages they will always be second tier characters and the originals will never go away. Because they are the real draw for the majority of fans.

The original characters are the draw for me but not in this current universe, I occasionally flick through some of the books but it's all so complex sounding I put them back on the shelf and buy something else.

I am the same way. I think at some point they will reboot. They have reached the limit of what they can do with this incarnation. They have no intention of replacing Luke, Han, and Leia. They would attract a LOT of new readers by restarting from where the films ended.

In NJO they clearly were attempting to supplant the movie characters with the next generation, but they seem to have dialed back on that notion. I would say that most people are going to be a lot more interested in Luke Han and Leia they will be in solely literary characters invented after the fact. Billions of people who know who Luke Skywalker is, but only thousands know who Jaina Solo is.

In fact it would be wise to kill one or two of these famous characters, create an event, and then reboot the whole thing and start again right after the Battle of Endor.

There has been hope of an animated show with the original characters to follow when Clone Wars is done. That would be the perfect way to launch a reboot.

True. Whatever they do, I think that the best approach would be "the further dashing space adventures of Luke Skywalker and his friends", rather than "the ongoing and intricate saga of every minor Star Wars character you can think of".

Well I think Luke dies first and leia can't handle it and goes into retirement and han goes with her.

While I don't discount that the Big Three remain the biggest draw for the Del Ray novels, I disagree with you about the intentions to not have them eventually replaced. Del Ray was moving to make Anakin Solo the successor to Luke when George Lucas made a decision from on high to cancel that idea. Also the very idea of deciding to age the characters tells me that Del Ray was preparing at some point to pass the torch to a new round of literary characters.

And despite the big draw of the Big Three, if you make interesting enough new characters, the small number of Star Wars book readers would likely stick around. We've seen quite bit of content that doesn't involve the Big Three and has been embraced by the fans.

Now looking at Del Ray's moves post-New Jedi Order it gets real curious about whether they had changed their minds regarding their intentions. With what happened to Jacen, the reputed heir to Luke after Anakin Solo, and then the lackluster attention paid to Jaina, they have weakened the secondary characters around the Big Three. Then again, perhaps Jaina's development was fitful as the writers decided to focus on Ben Skywalker in Legacy of the Force and Fate of the Jedi. There is also Allana Solo and the prophecy regarding her future that could be the backdrop for another major Star Wars storyline. So I have to say I do think Del Ray had some plans to pass on the torch, and perhaps those got muddled during and after the New Jedi Order arc, but could be back on track with Ben, Allana, and Vestara Khai.

I think Ben is a solid character with a good future in front of him, as is Allana. I could see those two eventually becoming starring characters.

There were rumors two years ago at Celebration IV (might have even been last year's) that there would be an animated New Jedi Order show with Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher reprising their roles with voice work. We discussed it on the board at the time but of course nothing like this transpired. I believe the announcement turned out to be Seth Green's comedy series IIRC.

^
The rumor or idea I heard was that it would take place after the New Jedi Order (series of books I'm guessing) and feature Luke as Grand Master or teacher of younger Jedi. I don't hear about Han or Leia being involved. I liked the idea, but it seemed like it died a quick death and Lucas wanted to do a TV series between Episodes 3 and 4.

Anything with that OT swashbuckling feel will potentially lure me back into the fold. A reboot of some sort with that kind of atmosphere would nail it for me.
