...the death of one or more of the Big Three?

http://www.theforce.net/latestnews/story/SDCC_Del_Rey_Announces_New_Titles_146930.asp

Han, Luke, and Leia are back in action--older and wiser, but as ready as ever to leap headlong into adventure!

Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, and Princess Leia have spent a lifetime fighting wars, bringing the Jedi back from extinction, raising families, and saving the galaxy more times than they can count. They've earned the right to rest on their laurels and let the younger generation shoulder the burden--but fate has another adventure in store for our heroes, a quest only they can tackle and hope to survive...

Interesting I wonder what they were going to follow up Fate of the Jedi with. Celebration VI is going to be fascinating. I love the cover.

Can't wait for the next chapter in the EU saga :)

I really don't want them to kill Luke or Han or Leia, though. Luke is by far my favorite character, and it'd be way too depressing for Han or Leia to be a widower.

Eh. Let 'em. I haven't bought a single STAR WARS novel since they killed Chewbacca, so another pointless death wouldn't make a difference to me,

The Big Three need to step aside eventually, but they don't have to be killed off in order for that to be accomplished. But in the hands of Troy Denning, who seems to almost always get the "big character death" books, I don't know...

My understanding is that
Han gets injuried while having a prostate exam.

I finally gave up on the Star Wars novels during the Yuuzhan Vong books - just didn't seem worth pursuing anymore. I can't see this tempting me back...

Yeah, How long does this go on for?

Its weird I have always seen myself as a little more of a fan of Star Wars than Star Trek. While I am at most a casual reader of fiction in general, I do read things that sound interesting to me. I often read Star Trek books and really never Star Wars ones.

A big reason is its like an endless soap opera. Most books are part of a long series. Which leads to another one and another one. So its hard to read a standalone story.

Plus even though the stories are now many years after the films the characters really have not changed much at all.

I doubt I would have much interest in stories continuing further forward in time without Luke, Han, and Leia either. Whether not the focus is off them due to retirement or death. Because the few times that has been tried like Legacy, its still the same ideas. Another Skywalker, the Sith are back again, I am guessing some Han type character, etc.

I have it on good authority that the Big Three will be faced with their biggest decision ever and that everything they have worked for has been building up to this one final moment where the fate of the entire galaxy will hang in the balance on this last choice.

That's right:
Red, green or blue.

I have thought they should restart after RotJ. The current version has had a good long run. The old books are not going anywhere and can still be enjoyed.

The current timeline was not planned out at all. I believe the Dark Empire comics were originally conceived to be right after the films. Which is why Han and Leia had two sons....

Obviously I am aware of this stuff. But it's confusing.

While the Vong War went on too long and was too dark, I've really enjoyed the books since then. "Legacy of the Force" and "Fate of the Jedi" definitely had their flaws and pacing issues, but I'm truly excited to read the newest book because it feels like the legitimate continuation of these beloved characters. So I'll be quite sad when it ends.

What if they refuse? :shifty:

I can't see any of the Big Three buying it ever, because I find it hard to see Lucas signing off on it. I could see them killing off Lando though, but he's been relatively marginalized from the main story lines for a while now so the death would be a big deal but not that meaningful in the long run.

I have been curious to see what was next after Fate of the Jedi, which was just saved by Denning's Apocalypse. I also thought Legacy of the Force was ultimately disappointing as well, which Denning's final book didn't save. I did like the Yuuzhan Vong War. It felt truly epic and I don't think the subsequent series have matched that.

Unfortunately I think the mostly excellent Legacy comic book series might have a constricting effect on the novels going forward since it's laid out some pretty important events that must happen and that will tie the novel writer's hands. Though I do think Denning's handling of the One Sith was pretty neat while in keeping with Legacy's canon. It will be interesting to see how the writers tie what they are doing into the history that will lead to Legacy while also fleshing out the whole Jedi Queen thing. Or I wonder if that prophecy will be left by the wayside.
