Star Wars Books Thread

It's a collected volume of James Blish's adaptations of TOS episodes which were released in smaller paperback volumes from the late '60s well into the '70s. These were an absolute staple of Trek fandom at the time. There are noticeable differences in several of the adaptations, since in the earlier volumes Blish was working from early draft scripts of the episodes. He also did some of his own exposition which does not always jibe with later canon Trek. But I find that perfectly OK, since to me, TOS is the only Trek that counts.

While this collected volume is quite nice, I prefer the original paperbacks due to their fantastic cover illustrations, and because I love vintage paperback books.

Kor

Also worth noting the new B&N edition does not contain all the episode adaptations, just a selection.

I love vintage books too!

True no hive mind, but I'm sure I liked that much.

I don't hold NJO is that high of esteem, since for me, it was the beginning of the end of the novel series for me; I really didn't like the stuff that came after it. I also found the books harder to get though. The movies were better, in my opinion, although I've always liked the movies more than the books.
Then sir you simply have a wrong or uninformed opinion.

You know, I prefer the old EU as a whole to the OT (I consider the old EU the thing that made me an outright fan of SW, even though I really enjoy the OT). There are many EU stories I'd consider superior to the OT (like the Thrawn trilogy). I also like NJO, generally speaking (except for the stuff with jacen Solo). But the NJO was not better then the OT. Not one part of it. I thought it was generally good, and sometimes very good, but better then the OT? No.

But, you can have your opinion. the problem is saying people are stupid, evil, etc if they don't agree with you about the NJO. That's ridiculous, and an uncalled for level of aggression in my opinion.

Jacen is the star and center of the NJO how could you like the NJO and not Jacen?

He's not the center. there are a lot of plot points, everything from the actual villains to Kyp Durron being an ass/the Jedi's problems to Han's problems after chewie's death and more. The NJO turned Jacen into my most hated SW character, with all the vergere crap. I consider Traitor the single worst Star Wars book ever written. But, even with that I don't consider him enough of a focus of NJO to ruin the storyline for me. He was one (bad) part of a story that had a lot going on.

Okay you and I have diametrically opposed opinions on Traitor-for me it is the absolute best piece of Star Wars put to pen no exceptions, Vergere one of the best mentors/mysterious guides and Jacen's journey of a philosophically inclined young man who struggles with his way retreats into pacifism, makes mistakes, faces capture then achieves Nirvana and in the process making peace with a species that didn't have a word in their language for peace.

That's the thematic heart of the NJO.

We don't always agree, but on this point, we agree :techman:

I never got to Traitor. I think the last set of novels I got from that series were those immediately before that, just after Coruscant falls. By that point there were too many novels coming out, mixed with getting better Internet speeds and working limited my ability and willingness to read novels as much as I had during my years in school, even through college I was reading novels, but after that I had less regular time off I suppose. I image I have enough time these days, but after 15 years the Internet calls.....

I don't have to tell myself anything, I've read the NJO and have seen the OT.

I read and saw both, and frankly, the NJO, in my assessment, falls considerably short of the movies, much less quite a few of the other novels written before it and since it came out. I couldn't get that much of an emotional connection with it; which I think is partially due to the huge scope of everything and partially that some of the writers didn't work for me.

Your just upset because people have discovered the OT isn't the be all end all of Star Wars.

The movies (all of them) are always going to be more important that the tie ins, and I'm saying this as a guy who loves collecting Star Wars novels and is enjoying the new "all is canon" policy; it's a movie franchise first and foremost.

Never read Traitor, but of the books I've read, I think John Jackon Miller's Kenobi is the best one to date. (I did read some of Stover's other Star Wars books and didn't really find the writing style very enjoyable. The only one I really liked was Shatterpoint, and even that one isn't one I'm really clamoring to re-read.)

The NJO turned Jacen into my most hated SW character, with all the vergere crap.

What didn't you like about NJO Jacen? (Personally, he was always a character I could take or leave; either just another young Jedi character or a kinda lame Kylo Ren-like character before TFA came and made one that was actually good.)

Vergere one of the best mentors/mysterious guides and Jacen's journey of a philosophically inclined young man who struggles with his way retreats into pacifism, makes mistakes, faces capture then achieves Nirvana and in the process making peace with a species that didn't have a word in their language for peace.

A.) Vergere was a Sith (or would-be Sith), B.) didn't she preach moral relativism, and C.) didn't she outright tell Jacen she was a liar and would only give him lies?

Troy Denning retconned her into one because he either didn't like or couldn't grasp Traitor.

Oh and to say Kylo is better than Jacen is like saying Doghide is better than Gallagher's Steak.

Its a truly ridiculous and stupid opinion.

Really people who hate the NJO are some of the most crass, stupid, deluded, arrogant, and downright sinister percentage of the human race.

It is that GOOD and they are that BAD!!!

NJO is the "Saved By The Bell: The New Class" of the Star Wars Universe. Except Dustin Diamond would probably turn down a role in NJO.

And it's probably a really really tiny percentage of the entire planets population and it feels like your comparing NJO with one of the actual greats of literature, which is a very interesting viewpoint to take youngling.
