Star Wars Books Thread

I find it kind of ironic that of all of first batch of the Journey to The Force Awakens books, the one that probably had one of the least enthusiastic reactions when it was first announced, has ended up getting one of the best reactions after it's release.
Every franchise needs to do its own take on Romeo & Juliet. :)

I'm still kinda disappointed that Trek never got a proper one.
Ever read Peter David's TNG novel "Q-in-Law"?
Yeah, the books have been middling for the most part, but the comics are amazing. Particularly the primary "Star Wars" series and, most of the time, "Darth Vader". The problem is the comics are portraying important events with major characters, while the books are dealing with side characters and unimportant events for the most part. I don't think anybody is going to be missing anything in the larger canvas if they skip Heir to the Jedi...
I've enjoyed the comics for the most part, but found the Lando series to be a disappointment after a strong start. Chewbacca is the first Marvel Star Wars book that I'm skipping, and will probably drop Kanan: The Last Padawan, as it's going back to Clone Wars era, which doesn't interest me as much. They left the Rebels era story up in the air, so I'll probably come back for the continuation on that.

yeah, the first issue of Chewbacca did feel like a bit of a waste. I love Chewie and all but a mute character cannot carry a series. I liked the Lando mini. And I'm enjoying the Kanan series.

I think he EU and I will stay 'divorced' then. I might try a comic or two, but I'm not giving the novels the investment in time and effort they require if they're no better than the old stuff.

Pity, a wasted opportunity...

It's an awkward time for them to be producing novels. They were in the middle of making the first new movie so everything was up in the air and they were deciding how to run the franchise as they went along. Now that they're in production on the next two movies (8 and Rogue One), hopefully matters have solidified now and they can start telling more important stories. Remember, the production on a novel is at least a year if not more.

I've been wondering if the novels they've been releasing were possibly just killing time until they started releasing bigger, more important stuff set between RotJ and TFA.

They have to be; while this first batch of novels were being written, the movie (and thusly, the entire continuity of the franchise) was still up in the air. The movie got delayed because of extensive re-writes.

I'm expecting a announcement about a big series covering the main characters' lives between RoTJ and TFA. So far they appear to have played fairly minor roles in the stuff set in that time frame, but I can't believe that will continue once the movie has come out.

Hell, it's thirty years of continuity. It could be fifty novels! I do hope they don't try to breeze through it all at once in one series. They have talked about how they worked out the details for six years after ROTJ and six years before TFA. So maybe we'll get a series each there, with the middle 18 years to come later.

They could always give us a big series that covers the whole time frame, and then go back and fill things out with stand alones.

I think we'll find out that nowhere near as much stuff has happened in the new EU as did in the old one.

Luke vanished, no new Jedi Academy (or mabe a failed one), no galactic invasion, less political to-ing and fro-ing.

I'd expect a New Republic, skirmishes with the remnants of the Empire, very few force sensitives around and less children for Leia and Han / Luke and whoever.

Gotta wonder if they're going to do anything between VII and VIII without stepping on too many toes so to speak. There was relatively not a lot of material between TPM and AOTC when they came out, what did come out mostly centered on other Jedi anyway (Mace and the rest of the council, as well as original creations like Quinlan Vos). Even stuff with Anakin and Obi-Wan such as Rogue Planet and Approaching Storm didn't really push the characters or saga forward. Same with the OT, it pretty much just them wondering around having adventures, or in the case of ESB/ROTJ, finding many false leads about Boba Fett's whereabouts and such (The main ESB-ROTJ linking adventure, Shadows of the Empire, didn't come out until over a decade after the OT was completed).

I wouldn't be surprised if they've got standing orders not to mess with anything post-VII for the foreseeable future.

I doubt we'll see anything after TFA until close to the release of VIII, maybe. There's a 30 year gap between the Original Trilogy and Sequel Trilogy, they should be able to find more than enough stories to keep fans busy between TFA and VIII.

I have the Star Wars and Darth Vader TPB's covering the first six issues of each Marvel run. Is there any crossover action or am I good to read each one through?

You can read 'em both through. There are a few moments where events touch upon one another, but you'll be fine. Enjoy.

Although Marvel has announced that there will be a crossover event between the two titles, called "Vader Down," but that hasn't started yet.

I feel the same way.

I just wish the EU didn't get all my money in the divorce.

What can I say, my lawyer sucked.

It's certainly a natural point to jump off (or on) should you desire to do so.

By the first FotJ book the EU started getting too far away from anything I cared about (or could keep track of) anymore so I ejected.

A new novel comes out today, a tie-in to the Battlefront game. Hopefully my library will get it in a couple months, I'm STILL waiting for them to get Aftermath :sob:
