Star Wars Book Reviews

I finished the Thrawn sequel. It was pretty good, but not as good as the first one. It really didn't need to be

half Clone Wars novel, and all the Padme stuff sucked just as much here as it did on the show, although the Anakin/Thrawn stuff was good

If it had less of that I think it would have been better. As it is its a decent book that drags in some parts.

I dunno, I think the Clone Wars material was necessary because the book really demystified Vader in a way that I've never seen before. By putting chapters with Anakin next to chapters with Vader, and putting the reader inside Anakin/Vader's thoughts, we got to see that Vader, no matter how much he thinks of Anakin as a separate person ("The Jedi"), is really just Anakin in a life-support suit and with James Earl Jones' voice. He's still rash and impulsive. He's bright but not always smart. And he's very much ruled by his emotions. What Vader has going for him is his unchecked rage and the fear that engenders in others. The book points toward the Dark Lord that Vader could become, if only he stopped to think, when Vader recognizes that Thrawn trusts him in the final battle.

I enjoyed it. Thrawn is very much the "space Sherlock Holmes" type character. The book reads fast.

I liked the Anakin parts well enough, it was specifically the solo Padme parts that I felt weren't very good and dragged parts of the book down. Its like the TCW show, which made me like Anakin but every time Padme got a solo episode or a major focus I was just bored at best.
