Let's give this one to the trusty sidekicks of the heros or villains.

Many of them had loyal helpers and companions who often became heros or villains in their own right, but were nevertheless the junior partner of someone else at one point.
Examples would be Chewbacca, Asohka Tano, that little critter of Jabba the Hut, Obi Wan in Episode 1, Jar Jar of course, and so on.
