Not sure if this has been posted / discussed (I haven't seen it). Fascinating video on the history of the Star Trek rights and some speculation on the current condition which would explain bad robot's take on Star Trek

Midnight's Edge....

They have a massive hate-boner for Discovery.

Almost everything they post is pure BS.

Midnight's Edge.

Their "sources" are a handful of Facebook posters who have a long track record of passing along rumors based completely on their own imagination, and who have been regularly and repeatedly proven wrong.
Midnight's Edge is really not worth watching, unless you have a need for your biases to be confirmed.

Good, there's a thread about this.

*cough*

We know ABSOLUTELY FUCK ALL about the Star Trek ownership split(?) between CBS and Paramount except that Paramount gets to put their name on (and money behind) the movies. Period.

NOT A THING

(p.s. if I'm wrong please educate me but I want to see legal documents, not "John Eaves said" or "I heard on Youtube", thanks.)

I've never watched a Midnight's Edge video, but I suspect I've already heard, I don't know, probably about 75% of what they think they know about the licensing rights... :D

The only thing we know is that we don't know the whole story.

Hence why conspiracy theories abound.

That's where common sense should come into play.

It makes little sense to me that the flagship show on CBS All Access would not be produced under CBS' own licence, and would instead be secretly produced by Paramount and Bad Robot - neither engaging in any promotion or receiving credit.

It makes even less sense that a spin-off of such a show (which would surely be under the same supposed Bad Robot-Paramount licence) would be on the horizon when the Bad Robot deal is about to expire.

I've seen increasingly insane claims, from Bad Robot having to fund it because CBS cut off funding (again, all in secret, with no credit or promotion) to it having to be 25% different in TONE from other Trek series (which is the dumbest thing I've ever heard, but it was argued by someone who seemed otherwise sane).

I don't care if people dislike the series, but coming up with wild conspiracy theories to try to discredit it is just petty.

The most frustrating part, for me at least, is how quickly this information gets disseminated.

Fannish conspiracy theories should not be taken at face value.
Fannish conspricacy theories should NEVER be taken at face value.

CBS owns the franchise, and exclusive TV rights.

In the Viacom split, Paramount retained rights to produce films.

It's not a difficult concept. CBS owns everything.

TV = CBS.

Theatrical films = Paramount.

If somebody tells you different, they're wrong.

Until and unless CBS states otherwise. :techman:

I couldn't listen to it all but I got to the point where they are basically saying that everything that isn't the original TV shows and is new and different isn't 'canon' hence we are lied to and got cheated ..I'm not sure they understand what canon means tho.
As usual, some correct informations (you can Google them anyway) about who created trek and owns its tv rights ..but all decorated by wild speculations and conspiracy theories that speak to a specific audience.
