Star trek

Could J.J have got away with doing star trek from before TOS with kirk and crew meeting for first time or did he have to reimage it as new time line to pull it off.My thoughts are that he got the right cast to play the parts as for the shape of the ship i could live with a new take on it ,i could enjoy this cast playing the crew we know in the our TOSline no problem.
Maybe if you say the film is a reboot you get more people into see it who might not have went before IMO.

Personally i think a recast was necessary but a reboot wasnt. There was plenty of room to tell the "Origin" story without resorting to Timetravelling miners.
