Star Trek XII Release Date & Box Office Discussion Thread

Since Star Trek XI is winding down at the box office, now seems like a good time to begin discussing Star Trek XII's box office potential, but also when it should be released amidst the increasingly crowded Summer 2011 movie season.

This is the current release schedule for Summer 2011:
May
5/6 - Spider-Man 4 (Sony)
5/20 Thor (Paramount)
5/26 The Hangover 2 (WB)

June
6/3 - Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom of Doom (P/DW)
6/17 - Green Lantern (WB)
6/24 - Cars 2 (BV)

July
7/1 - Transformers 3 (P/DW)
7/15 - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part II (WB)
7/22 - The First Avenger: Captain America (Paramount)
7/29 Smurfs (Sony) - 7/29

Plus, Disney announced "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" for Summer 2011 on September 12th, 2009. Transformers 3 is included, even though Michael Bay has stated he wants to take a break, because Paramount is squatting there and has yet to announce any change in release date. Assuming "Transformers 3" is moved, "Pirates 4" will likely quickly take that spot since two of the previous films have opened during the first week of July.

"Star Trek XII" is quickly running out of slots it could take without running directly into competition. Paramount could just swap "Star Trek XII" into "Transformers 3"'s spot, but we'll see.

I vote June 10, since Spidey will have been out for a while, and the Hangover will have had 2 weeks to rake it in. Plus Trek's legs will carry it well into September.

Green Lantern and Cars 2 aren't really direct competitors.

Transformers II is, and this would provide a bit of a cushion.

Yeah, but would Paramount really want to release Trek XII the week after they released Kung-Fu Panda 2? They're not really playing for the same target audience, I know, but it doesn't seem likely that a studio would have two of their major releases open so close to each other. For the same reason, May 13 wouldn't really work either (since Thor opens the following week).

I say they just push back Transformers III and open Trek on July 1. I wouldn't mind if they just forgot about Transformers altogether, but given how much ROTF made, I know that ain't gonna happen.

Of course, if Trek opens in July, it may have to compete with Pirates... damn. Summer 2011 is looking quite crowded already.

Think there is a chance they might move Thor, I see that being 2011s GI Joe.

I don't agree. The self-financed Marvel films have turned out really well so far. It already has good people involved: Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman, and is being directed by Kenneth Branagh.

June 10 definitely works better than the week after "Spider-man 4." Studios sometimes release films one week after another, but it probably depends on who the movie is targeting. In a way, "Kung Fu Panda 2" does overlap with "Star Trek XII" since there were a lot of families watching "Star Trek XI."

When is Fathers day? If you remember back Trek actually increased on that weekend. Release it then!

Another film has swooped into July. Universal announced today that "Battleship" will open on 7/1/11. The article doesn't mention "Transformers 3," but since it hasn't been officially moved, I'll let it there.

7/15 - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part II (WB)
7/22 - The First Avenger: Captain America (Paramount)
7/29 - Smurfs (Sony) - 7/29

Battleship? Is this movie supposed to be based on the game? Not that there's any story in the game one could actually base a film on, but the way studio heads think at times, you never really know.

Yeah, I don't know what to tell you. Universal is also making a Candyland and Monopoly movie.

One would think not direct competitors to the Star Trek audience. Or at least complementary thereto.

Agreed. It's the superhero flicks and Transformers they have to avoid. Unfortunately it looks like those movies have carved up the summer pretty well.

Personally, I would mind seeing Paramount push it to Thanksgiving.

Transformers 3 will not come out in 2011 if Bay is doing it anyway so I expect ST to get pushed to July though I think longer legs will be weaker if that happens and opening weekend won't be as good for that weekend.

I fancy Trek can do great work a week later than Spiderman.

Here's another consideration...IMAX screens.

Spider-man 4 is opening in IMAX on May 6th, and since they do at least 2-week engagements, Trek XII can't open the week after and take advantage of the premium ticket prices for the format.

However, May 20th may have opened up. According to Variety, Thor is now opening on June 17th.

Bingo, I thought they would either move Thor or put it instead of Transformers. I think Trek is headed for 20th May and Transformers is staying put. This is assuming IMAX is free so soon after Spiderman 4.

Paramount should announce Trek XII ASAP.
