Star Trek XI vs. Other Movies

The American public seems to be answering how much they like the reboot of Trek with their wallets at the box office. (Star Trek is only $9 million behind Monsters vs. Aliens for highest total domestic box office in 2009.) We have been debating STXI's place in the annals of all time Trek, BUT...I was just wondering...How does the new Trek incarnation stack up against other films you've seen this year? (Try to keep it to a list of 5.) My list:

1.) Star Trek
2.) Terminator Salvation
3.) Wolverine
4.) The Soloist
5.) Taken

If you only mean movies released this year:

1. Star Trek
2. The Wrestler
3. Kenny Begins
4. Knowing
5. Watchmen
6. 17 again

If you mean every movie I have seen this year that I hadn´t seen before:

1. Borat
2. The Last Samurai
3. The Terminal
4. Star Trek
5. The Wrestler
6. The Dark Knight
7. Spiderman 2
8. Transformers
9. Kenny Begins
10. Latest Rocky

Out of those 5 mentioned in the OP, I've only seen Star Trek and Taken.

While Taken was a decent movie, it was way too cliche'. How many times haven't we seen some story about the "CIA Agent" who's combat prowess and technical/detective skills border on superhero like? I was also uncomfortable with the fact that it dealt with a serious topic (child abuse/prostitution) in a fantastical way that never happens in real life.

Anyway, I'm getting off topic. Star Trek is definitely better than every film I have seen in the past 5 years.

The only movie I've liked more was Batman Begins, but I liked it better than The Dark Knight.

I've only seen a handful of movies this year so I guess I'll rank them.

1. Star Trek
2. Taken
3. Monsters Vs. Aliens
4. Watchmen

I might see Wolverine or TS. I'm leaning more towards Wolverine than TS though.

Only movies released in 2009...I should have been a little clearer! Thanks!

I agree with you on Taken. I just haven't seen that many movies this year that's why I had to include it in the rankings. (It will easily fall off the list once Transformers ROTF hit theaters June 26th!) Also, Batman Begins was a MUCH better film than TDK...I was a bit surprised by TDK's box office success...

Good: Star Trek

Average: Watchmen

Bad: Wolverine, T4,

There's more crap coming this summer, it won't be a good year for quality.. unlike last summer.

Having seen both, TS is MUCH better. Wolverine wasn't bad, just OK. TS was a really good movie!

Star Trek is the ONLY movie I've seen in theater this year. The only movie I've seen recently (a couple of months) that exceeds Star Trek is Dark Knight. The only reason it's second is what effect it had on me comming out of the theater as I wasn't sure if I had liked it at all at that time. It took me a night sleep (or lack of) to "accept" the reboot and enjoying it.

Star Trek ruined all other movies for me this year. Each time I think of going to a different movie, my inner Trekkie comes out and screams "You can't watch any other movie as long as Star Trek is in theaters!" So I listen to it and see Star Trek again.

The last movie I saw in the cinema was King Kong (which IMO was no where near as great as the original).

I don't actually enjoy watching stuff in the cinema as I usually get bored and antsy and start looking to multitask something.. and if the movie fails to engage me I feel trapped. The movie I saw before King Kong was Revenge of the Sith.

Now I could sit and watch Star Trek in the cinema ALL DAY. It's the most rewatchable thing I've seen in years.

As much as I liked Star Trek, there are actually several movies I enjoyed a great deal more this year. Like Gran Torino, Taken or Defiance.

If you are talking about the Peter Jackson King Kong, I thought it was great. It's as serious as you can possibly make a movie about a huge ape who falls in love with a human female.

Heard great things about Gran Torino, and saw Taken. Star Trek was way better than Taken. Only reason I'd watch taken again is to see those massively hot chicks again.

Having grown up with the original King Kong (no I am not that old but we always watched it whenever it was on) I found the remake had little if any emotional impact for me. The chase scenes were too long and repetitive as well. I didn't dislike it but it the original was truly amazing especially considering it was made in 1933.

I recall seeing the '76 remake in the cinema, haven't seen that around in a long time.

Jack Black was great in the 2005 film. If I had not been emotionally impacted by the original watching it as a child I may have had a different view of it. If you haven't seen the original I recommend hunting it down.

The only other movie I've ever seen at the theater -- original run -- more times than Star Trek was Star Wars. I saw Star Wars about 20 times at the theater 30+ years ago, and so far I've seen Star Trek 9 times.

I intend to keep going until it leaves, but I don't know if I will make it to 20. It's a lot different now than in the 1970's when there were no DVD's. However, on a love scale, I love this movie more than Star Wars.

Star Wars was a great fantasy adventure that mixed classic medieval tales into a "futuristic" fantasy setting.

The way I see it, Star Wars became extremely popular because:

A: The original film (A new hope) was a typical story about a knight and his apprentice, whom becomes more powerful than his teacher (to his teacher's delight and pride) and their struggle to defeat an evil empire and save the damsel in distress. Add to that the gun ho take no prisoners style of Han Solo, and the movie caught everyone by surprise (When Sci-Fi was very cerebral "2001esque" stuff).

B: What caused the explosion of devotion for that universe though was Return of the Jedi, and it's massively insane space battle sequences which to this day have not been matched by any other space movie EVER.

I don't actually love it more than my original love of Star Wars.. I saw that 7 times in the cinema, it was my summer of Star Wars and I never tired of it. 20 times is very impressive!! I had to scrape together the funds or beg my mother for each viewing otherwise I suspect I would have seen it at least 10 times.

I also saw Attack of the Clones 9 times. I adored AOTC. Luckily enough years had elapsed that I could pay for as many viewings as I wished, LOL.

I cannot wait to see Star Trek again. It is the most wonderfully re-watchable experience.. and it's a great Big Screen film which is why knowing I will obtain the DVD isn't really enough.

It depresses me to think that one day "FIRE EVERYTHING" won't reverberate through the cinema any more. It won't be the same on DVD, despite the wonders of the minutiae gathering pause button.

::adore:: STXI ::adore::

I haven't seen any movies in cinema this year.
Because I've been saving my money for Star Trek.
I've run out of money, and it's only been out for a few weeks.
I can't decide if this is pathetic b/c I spent all my money on Star Trek, or if it's pathetic because I didn't have enough money to see it more than eight times.

If I had seen any other movies, though, Star Trek would be number one. On general principal.
