Star Trek XI score

So when the movie opens up, are we going to here the score from TOS, or a variation of it, or the score from TMP since it seems to be the most used? It would be kind of interesting on how they are going to do it.

I'd check out the soundtrack albums "Lost", "Lost 2" and "M:I:III". (I always do.) There are some spacey, actiony and moody Michael Giacchino tunes on those CDs!

And there'll be a few musical homages to TOS and TMP in the new ST film somewhere.

This is something that I've been curious about as well...they included a sampling of the original series music during Spock's "Space...The Final Frontier" in the teaser trailer so I imagine we could get a moderized version or perhaps even something new.

I know I'm possibly in the minority here, but I'd be quite happy _not_ to hear the TNG/TMP opening theme. At this point, to my mind, it's been seriously overplayed.

The Klingon theme, OTOH, I can always go for, though I still think its best presentation is in TMP.

^^^ I know what you mean, the first 3 chords of the Star Trek theme don't do that " WOW...Exploring space!!!" thing like it's supposed to do...well, not anymore.

In my opinion. the biggest mistake they made with both the animated series and with TMP was NOT using the original series themesong.

THAT says "Star Trek".

If they've used the original lettering style/font on early ads and have used the little bit of the TOS theme we heard in the trailer, I can only hope they use the full length original themesong.

Does this mean it will OPEN with the music? I sort of doubt it. The thing with movies today is to open with MAYBE the title on screen, and then go right into the story. The credits (and often even the title) aren't seen until the end, and it's then you hear music.

Still, I sort of wish they'd do something like what happened with ST 5.

They do a teaser like on the series, then go into the theme music, as if it's an episode of the show. Then, get right back into the story telling once the theme and credits are over. (My only complaint about ST 5 is that they did this using the TMP/TNG theme after the first few notes, rather than sticking with TOS all the way.)

Excuse me,...but TAS did use the same "theme".

Sorry, but the facts say otherwise.

As I said, it was a mistake not to, but the simple fact is that TAS did not use the TOS themesong.

If you'd like to compare the two sometime, please do. They're not the same tune at all.

Even those few single opening notes differ.

what the...? How did Captain Mikequote gastrof before he posted?

In any event, gastrof is correct. They used a new theme tune for TAS (although it was in a similar vein as the TOS theme).

My fault.

I was editing a post and deleted it. Good thing I'd copied the text first.

Put it back in fast, but he replied to the now deleted one before the new version could get submitted.

I had mentioned this earlier today in the real world. I figure that it will likely be a tweak of the TOS theme with a possible segue into the TMP/TNG theme, but I agree that it will likely be at the start of the end credits.

Listen to Michael Giacchino's score for Mission Impossible 3 and you'll hear him use music from the original M:I series in his score. I'm sure he'll do the same with Trek. He'll do a version of the TOS for sure.

They have to use some parts of the famed titles from Trek. Whether just the fanfare, or anything more. As much as they want this for a "new audience" they also realize some things work, so don't fix them. The key parts of music amongst them. I for one would like to hear a modern take on that famed fight music from TOS.

It used enough familiar elements to be a great "sequel" to the TOS theme. Perfect!
There are indeed familiar reference points, even though it's clearly different music.

I would imagine that there were copyright issues involved which may have prevented or discouraged them from re-using the same theme music. Also, it may simply have been a decision to go with music that better fit what other shows were using at the time -- 1973, after all, was a very different time from 1965-66, and the character of TV theme music changes along with everything else (even that used for Saturday-afternoon cartoon shows, which is what TAS started off being.)

In refreshing my memory of how the TAS theme sounded, I ran across a YouTube clip, shot at some music-industry trade show in Germany, of Stu Hamm (bassist for Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and others) playing in the Soundservice/Hartke & Samson booth, and he starts off with a familiar tune. It's fun to see where he goes with it from there.

I see no need to quote Goldsmith's Star Trek music. Yes it's wonderful, but none of the other feature composers felt the need to use it. They all did work with the Courage theme in some way though, and that of course should be in the new score.
