In Star Trek XI the traditional crew-mainly composed of cadets in this timeline-is elevated to their places mainly by the death or injury of various higher-ranking officers.
In the anime series Mobile Suit Gundam, something very similar happens at the beginning of the series, when the senior crew of the "White Base"(The series's ship) is either wiped out or injured, requiring a group of cadets and civilians to take over the workload. However, eventually they become 'the' crew.
A similar story is told in Gundam Seed, which is partially a redux of the original Gundam (But with better animation and the more colorful Gundams of the Gundam "Alternate Universe".)
This isn't the first time the franchises have had similarities. Gundam, like Star Trek, originally was a fairly low-rated program in it's original run. However, reruns on both shows gained a cult following, and became a part of their country's pop culture landscape.
