Star Trek vs Star Wars

I wonder how Jim Kirk would do in a fist fight with Anakin Skywalker? I don't mean Kirk's fist against Anakin's force powers, but fists. Anakin is young and well muscled, but the movies show he is easily baited, he's accustomed to having access to the force and weapons.

Kirk thinks his way through fights, but Kirk is smaller and older, most likely possesses less endurance than Anakin.

Both men are used to winning.

I think that Kirk is tougher and (down inside) a lot meaner. Not a easy win for Kirk, but a win.

I can just see it now. Luke Skywalker and James T. Kirk, locked in an epic battle, until Kirk beats him down, and then:

Kirk: So...apparently, Obi-Wan never told you what happened to your father....

Luke: He told me enough! He told me you killed him!

Kirk: No, Luke: I...AM YOUR FATHER!!!

Luke: No...no, that's not true. That's impossible--

Kirk: Search your feelings, Luke. You know it to be true!

(Long pause....)

Luke: YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!

I have seen this kind of topic before on the Science fiction boards. You get a bunch of Trekkies and Star Warriors debating and nitpicking on every little thing until the end of time. They get to serious about it and make it into a big deal. From Enterprise Vs Star Destroyer, blaster vs phaser, Hypodrive Vs Warpdrive, and Laser & Phaser.
Ummm... so what's your point? This is TrekBBS where people endlessly debate everything... it's what we live for...

Vader: [choking Kirk] You can't even speak. What?
James T. Kirk: I've got your lightsaber!
[decapitates Vader]

From my experience with Star Trek & Star Wars fans, fans of Star Trek usually enjoy Star Wars as well. Fans of Star Wars however have a harder time appreciating Star Trek.

I think it boils down to that it's easier to enjoy something like Star Wars, whereas Star Trek requires more from the viewer.

I've drawn ire from both trekkies and rabid SW fans for saying I like them both. For slightly different reasons, but both are wonderful franchises with high and low points.

Amen. Star Wars is pretty much sensationalistic "high-concept" pop-culture films. Star Trek is deeper, more controversial, more...shall I say...intelligent.

I agree. But I must say...even "Spock's Brain" isn't nearly as unwatchable as the second half of Revenge. I.M.A.N.S.H.O., of course. :)

It's disghusting, but it's like an Undeniable Truth Of Life: Star Wars Fans almost invariably have a holier-than-thou attitude towards Trekkers/Trekkies.

Sadly the truth is that both parties need to take TV shows and movies substantially less seriously!

I think part of the reason Star Trek is more appealing to some people (such as myself) is because of how much more time has been given to developing the characters and exploring so many psychological and emotional facets of them. With the most iconic Star Trek characters, we get several seasons and a few movies to explore their personalities. Even the ones who weren't in movies had 4-7 seasons of character development.

With Star Wars, you only get three movies. From what I've seen (having not watched "Attack of the Clones"), you don't learn much of interest about Obi Wan, Yoda, C-3PO, R2D2, Chewbacca, and Darth Vader that you wouldn't have already known from the first three Star Wars movies in the prequels and the other characters in those movies are totally one-dimensional.

Thats just the sort of thing a Star Trek fan would say. ;)

Now, that's not to say "High-concept" films don't have their place. I myself thoroughly enjoy Top Gun and Days Of Thunder.

But...whichever catergory is better--complex, literary tales or simplistic, "pop" tales--depends, I guess, on one's state of mind.

I am a Star trek fan but its been decades since Star Trek was "controversial" (If it ever was). Complex, deep, intelligent? I dunno. Star Trek has a very simplistic and pop approach to being "Complex, deep and intelligent". It's pretty shallow compared to a lot of SF books and perhaps a hand full of films. As fans we like to embrace the idea the Trek is "Complex, deep andintelligent" because it makes us seem Complex, deep and intelligent ;)

Trek has far more attempts at deep storytelling, and science, than Wars does. They might not always get it right, but at they try. I find Trek more cerebral and varied than Wars.
