News Star Trek Voyager Documentary

I had no idea VOY not only had to suffer the UPN debacle too (and like ENT), but basically helped launch UPN in the first place!
Was interesting learning about the actors and actresses and how the got the role - learned lots of things there.
I am sorry to hear the cast & crew didn't get a respectful and appreciative goodbye (once the cameras stopped filming)
Berman and Braga weren't without fault, but they don't deserve a lot of anger or hate that a lot of the fanbases gave them - especially since they really tried to shield Star Trek from too much UPN meddling (boy band/pop stars of the week in ENT... and all that)

Yeah at the time it was huge. This was a huge investment for Paramount, it was removing Trek from syndication and Voyager was THE tentpole to launch it.

A documentary could made on this alone. UPN struggled, Voyager struggled, they kind of fed into each other with their issues. UPN wasn't even available in many areas at the time, so some US viewers couldn't even get it and Voyager. UPN then was cutting chunks out of Voyager to make way for more adverts to appease advertisers, it just got messy.

I watched it last night. They did a pretty good job with it. Berman catches a lot of flack but the guy tried to uphold the spirit of Gene's universe, while maintaining story and technological continuity with his three series going at the time, and while still appealing to a 90s television audience. This doc kind of made me appreciate what we had. Modern Trek is all over the map. UPN's meddling certainly did not do any favors for VOY and later ENT in terms of ratings and audience reach. They should have stuck with first run syndication.
Berman was a business man who clearly took his duty to Gene seriously. He's not without issues, but he was a custodian for Star Trek and dealt with a lot of the studio stuff. Trek lacks that sort of figure these days.

You basically just described everything that Alex Kurtzman has done for the franchise since 2016. His job is functionally the same as Rick Berman's.

I'm not the best at copy-pasting, but the newest update on the documentary confirms that you can buy tickets for the NYC and London premieres. Kate Mulgrew will be at the NYC one, which is tempting, but it's in November, which would be tough for me when I'm already traveling for Thanksgiving, and the tickets are $200, which is...high for me.

Yeah, I'll skip it for $200 as well. But we're getting closer to a premier at least.

If I was in a position to get into NYC easily I might go for it, but I'm 6-7 hours away, so while I might be able to do what I did for the WWLB premiere and stay with friends or family and take the train into NYC for it, doing it that close to Thanksgiving makes it less viable, especially when it costs that much and October isn't being a cheap month for me.

But I will regret not getting the chance to see Kate Mulgrew in person.

Few producers do.

Was excited to meet a backer this weekend who is going to a premier in LA.

I'm not really up on the Voyager doc, but I wonder if it's too late for them to add a section for Jeri Taylor in memorium. And what interview access they had with her, either new stuff or archival stuff.

They might at least be able to add a "For Jeri" tag or "In Memoriam" or such.
I attended the LA premiere last night. They did include a very touching memorial title card to Ms. Taylor at the end.

I thought the film was very good. It covered everything I thought it would and had some good insights about the actors in particular. Phillips is hilarious and was wasted as Neelix.

How did the remastered footage look?

How did the remastered footage look?

Excellent. I had not read a great deal about the documentary in advance, so I didn't know that was going to be a feature, but as soon as it showed up onscreen I realized it had to have been remastered.

Another treat: they spent about five minutes or so on Bujold, which included footage of her in bridge and ready room scenes that I had never seen or heard of before. Bujold was terrible. Just awful. I have no doubt the show would been canceled after two or three seasons if she hadn't bailed.

Unless it's different footage, that's likely the same stuff we've seen on the DVDs?
Could be. I had never seen it before so it was a fun inclusion. The doc amply illustrated to me that she was all wrong for the part without actually saying so, leaving it to the viewer to decide. I thought it was tasteful but effective. And also for me, a nice pushback on anti-Janeway/Mulgrew people, a contingent whose views I don't share and have never understood. For balance, the filmmakers also covered Mulgrew's mistreatment of Jeri Ryan, again without heavy-handedness.

Anything on the Kes ousting and Jennifer Lien? That is one of the topics I had hoped they did not shy away from and one we've gotten a lot of conflicting information about over the years.
