News Star Trek Voyager Documentary - Pre Release Discussion

It seems like a long time, but I'm not sure it's significantly longer than WWLB took.
It was about two years. Voyager has now been three years so far. (Though the DS9 one was soft-started a fair while before the IndieGoGo went up.)

I will be setting my holo-chronometer for the 32nd century release of this.
Trust me - you are not alone in this feeling. Unless they think they can make a ton of money very quickly with any project, most studios will take forever. They almost seem to get a sick delight out of it, teasing the fans and then postponing the whole thing by months or even years. We become frustrated, but they don't care - its no skin off their back.

I wonder if they've burnt through the Kickstarter money ages ago and are having to supplement with convention appearances etc?

Updates from the Voyager doc:

"We are getting so close"*
"We are continuing to edit the film at breakneck speed"**

So good news!

...Except those updates are from *two and **four months ago. ;)

When I went to Trek to SF and talked to the guy who was head of this documentary, I accepted his explanation. However, the longer this goes on, the more I will think twice before donating to a documentary or kick starter project. I understand delays, but they really have sucked with communication, and there are years where the only updates I would get would be if I went to conventions which is more money. Basically I'm paying a lot of money just to get updates on this thing if you add up the initial donation and then costs of tickets and flights to go to various conventions. Usually donations are in the $20 (Depends on ones generosity I guess) but with this project, I feel like I've given them too much money for very little.

If I was running this campaign, I would have hired a communications director right away and then said, you are sending out emails once a month until the blu rays are released. This could be small updates, or just things that have happened in the last month and maybe even include a small minute long clip. Then at least the communication would be covered and I would feel like I'm a part of this journey from donation to completion.

I don't really doubt that it will happen eventually...OTOH, whether I'd back a future project of this nature is in grave doubt. DS9 was a gimme as it was and remains my favorite Trek series of all time (indeed, I went to the NYC preview). VOY I was never nearly as fond of, but I was curious to learn more about what went on behind the scenes. With ENT and the other series, I don't really have even that base level of curiosity.

Speak of the devil, just got an update now.
Probably the most important excerpt, maybe:
"We understand your anticipation for backer screenings and the official release date. Our team is diligently working to finalize these details and will share them in early August at Creation Entertainment's ST-LV: TREK TO VEGAS Convention 2024.

Thank you for your continued support and belief in this project."

I appreciated the short video update. Also, I guess that new Trinner/Keating show is official. They were talking a little about it back in March when they were here.

^I'm a little confused about that. Weren't they doing the Shuttlepod Show, or did that conclude, or is this a follow-up to it?

Update #39.5? from The Star Trek Voyager Documentary

Your inquiries have not gone unnoticed, and we appreciate your patience as we navigate the final stages of production. While we're still in post-production, we're eager to give you a glimpse into our progress.

Here is an exclusive interview with our producer and editor, Joe Kornbrodt, as he provides a behind-the-scenes look at what we're working on.

So this was not the usual way of posting an update using INDIEGOGO. Kind of strange. I agree with @DonIago , I doubt I will back any future projects of this nature. Although I do appreciate another update.

I'm in the same boat with many in this thread. I was excited to help make this documentary a reality, but it's dampened somewhat over the now years since the Indiegogo campaign completed. While I'm very familiar with the vagaries of film production, To the Journey has never felt like it's got a true driving force behind it like What We Left Behind had in Ira Steven Behr. All the delays seem like scope creep (adding more and more and more rounds of interviews) or an indistinct idea of what the documentary wants to be.

Some day it'll be out and we'll enjoy it (or not) and the delays won't matter any more.

It's so long ago I originally paid my money that it'll feel like a freebie if the Blu-ray ever turns up.

They did send out the coffee mug and other bits and pieces a year ago, so at least I got something.

Not sure if I'd back another documentary from these guys. What would they even do?

The main selling point for this and the DS9 doc was that the DVD extras for those shows were so poor. TNG and ENT got good Blu-ray releases with Roger Lay extras, so they're already covered. There's also the Chaos on the Bridge film that covers early TNG.

So I guess that's probably it.

I also feel that if they attempted an ENT documentary of this nature, then with Manny Coto's passing one of the most significant voices would be missing.

I still have doubts that the VOY documentary is going to engage in the level of candor I'd like from it, but we'll see. If it feels like a misty-eyed nostalgic puff piece though, I'm going to be gravely disappointed.

Hardly a dealbreaker though. There were no new interviews with Piller or Brooks for DS9 and it was great.

And it's not like they're supposed to be in-depth Making Ofs anyway, What We Left Behind was more of a fond look back. I expect the VOY one will be the same, and I'd gladly pony up for an ENT one provided I live long enough for them to make it. ;)

WWLB did touch on the Dax issue though. Similarly, I'd expect the VOY documentary to discuss Kes (at least briefly, versus acting as though she never existed) and Harry Kim's lack of promotion. Bonus points if it talks about what I've been led to believe was friction between Mulgrew and Ryan, or if it discusses the fact that Mulgrew wasn't the original choice to play Janeway. As I said in my last message, I just don't want them to act as though the show was a well-oiled machine when we know it wasn't.

I'm also not sure why you're saying it's not a dealbreaker if Coto isn't included, as that seems like a matter of opinion?

Of course. If you were personally opposed to watching an ENT doc that did not feature a new interview with Coto, that's up to you. My point was more that lack of a new interview doesn't mean a voice will be completely absent.

Neither do I.

I think a dealbreaker on a possible ENT Documentary for me would be a new Jolene Blalock interview. She's become kind of like Avery Brooks, not wanting to associate herself with Trek anymore. I can understand that. She and Jeri Ryan had something in common in that through all the "sex appeal", it was the acting that made those characters what they were.

Speaking of Blalock, I've been rewatching Stargate SG1 and I'm almost at her first appearance. I'm really looking forward to revisiting her Stargate character.
