Star Trek Voyager Desktop Wallpapers

Hey guys,

Thanks for the encouragement. I didn't mean to put myself down or anything like that, I merely wished to show the difference. I actually know what making pictures involves and there's no denying the fact that you need a lot more time and persistence for making those book covers.

Also, I think another difference would be that I make these wallpapers in my spare time and I suspect that the ones above were made by professional illustrators. For me, this is a hobby and it won't go beyond that. There's nothing that would make me give up teaching, not even Voyager or Thomas Eugene Paris,:hugegrin::hugegrin:. So yes, this'll remain a hobby for me but I'm more than happy to entertain people with it if they like it.

And since you've cheered me up with your remarks, here's an extra wallpaper for today. Welcome, all you VOY fans, to Paxau :luvlove::

Wow I've made a few wallpapers myself as a hobby and I gotta say after scanning through these, I give you props for having the patience to do per episode ones. I never liked my skills at cutting out people from busy backgrounds so I tried to stick with using publicity photos when I could.

Hello ... and thanks. Cutting out people from photos is not easy, esp. that three quarters of Voyager were filmed in the dark - that's often a problem. Also, sometimes you have to enlarge the people and that makes them blurred, like middle Janeway in the above picture for PRIME FACTORS. But the most difficult thing about making these pictures for me is always the backgrounds. What should be in the background, how should it be arranged and in what colours? Often, I find I don't have a better idea than the starry sky, this is a sci-fi show after all, so a background with a lot of stars looks good. Then I try to choose something else and come to the conclusion that it doesn't look half as good as the starry sky ...
Strange, isn't it? But definitely, this is the most difficult bit for me. I don't know about others, it would be nice to know who finds what the most challenging aspect of wallpaper-making.

If you think your wallpapers are ready to be shared, please feel free to do so here on my thread.

Most of my stuff is simple. In cases of heavily edited looking ones (the good ones) its just me learning a PStut and applying a Trek spin to it. All my planets are just because I wanted to learn to make space wallpapers so I figured why not do Trek planet interpretations. I ended up getting rid of most of my oldest stuff because they weren't in 1080 and I didn't like them much after getting better. I started learning Photoshop in 2006 just so I could make my own. Hope you don't mind just a google album link its where I keep all my stuff, I never learned to link images here plus I don't want to hijack your thread.

You are too modest, they are beautiful. Apart from the VOY ones, which I all love (with one exception ), my fav would be the one where you filled out the letters of STAR TREK with characters' photos.

Really, I'd like to ask you to share some of the VOY ones here occasionally. Like once a month or so. Let others see your work (I know that they can click on the above link but some people don't check in every day, only occasionally to scan this thread quickly and they might not notice it).

English is not my mother tongue so I must ask: what is a PStut?

BTW, I use GIMP2, not Photoshop.

Lots of channels on Youtube, and other sources helped me refine my skills better than I could on my own. Especially space scenes. A big ton of it I usually forget but a lot of the easy tricks I remember and can duplicate. It's why I say the really good ones in my folder are just me following directions and adding a Trek or Doctor Who spin to it. :)

I haven't made a character one in awhile but your thread inspired me to make this one:

Sorry I still have no idea how to make pics show up, and since I won't post many I'm not going worry about figuring it out.
Nice one!
The way to do it is:

Just don't type spaces within the square brackets.
Try it ... let everyone else see what wallpaper you made. It's quite a nice one.

It came up as a broken link, I'm not gonna worry about it too much. Like I said I don't want to hijack your thread anyway just thought you might like that one.
Yeh, I tried it myself and the same thing happened. Funny.
Also, there must be something wrong with this site too or it might just be my computer, I don't know but for the last 24 hours I have hardly been able to type here.

Thomas I agree with you. I've tried my hand at creating some art of this kind and removing someone from their background can be incredibly challenging.

Although this was originally @SimpleLogic 's statement, I do agree with it. Like I've mentioned in an earlier post, the biggest challenge is to get it right without either leaving an edge around the character or actually mutilating him/her. In the case of Voyager, this whole thing is complicated by what I call "the Voyager disease", namely that half of the episodes were shot in the dark. EQUINOX causes me a lot of headaches because that episode is practically dark from the first minute to the last. At the moment, I am working on some AUTHOR, AUTHOR wallpapers and you have no idea how it is killing me. The Doc's holonovel was shot with next to zero lighting so it does take creativity to deal with that. Also, it is way more difficult to cut out a character when you can see his/her profile than when (s)he is face to face to you.

There are some other factors that complicate this whole thing further, notably a female character's curly hair (B'Elanna from Season Six and Kes from Season Three), a character's bald head (now who do I mean, you guys wonder ... :D), Chakotay's ears (esp. his left ear) and most importantly of all Neelix's beard (cutting out Mr. Tulak from AUTHOR, AUTHOR has been one of the most challenging things to date).

Btw, once you've cut out a character (no matter in what way), there are other programmes you could use for further refining it. But making a VOY wallpaper takes me about three hours in general, so it would require a stretch of patience to further refine the characters. If there ever were a wallpaper competition or something, I would gladly do that, but basically I am happy with the characters the way they are. Sometimes there are little tricks you can employ to cover the fact that you didn't manage cutting them out properly but they only work in like 20% of the cases.

My remark about backgrounds originally referred to something else, however. When making these wallpapers, I have an idea as to who I want in the picture, how I want to arrange them in the picture, which direction they should be looking, what scene within a given episode they should come from, etc. Once I've cut out the characters and arranged them against a black background, my main headache is what I should do with the black background itself. Inserting the starry sky usually does the trick but I'd like to have at least a few pics for each episode when it's not simply the stars that are in the background but something else. Or the stars as well as something else. Now what that something else should be and more importantly how I can insert it into the background is usually the biggest challenge for me.

Thomas Eugene i love the raven one i think it looks amazing
Thanks. There have been quite a few of those (and there will be) so I don't know which one you mean. But thanks anyway.
