Star Trek vinyl Records

The Grim Ghost

I wasn't sure whether to place this in the TOS forum or General, I opted for General.

I recently dug out a 12 inch 33 1/3 Star Trek record from when I was a kid. It is dated 1979 and has a pic from the Motion Picture on the cover, though both stories on it take place during TOS.

It contains two stories, The Crier in Emptiness and Passage to Moauv. They obviously aren't voiced by the original actors, but the stories though short are surprisingly good.

One is about a creature made of pure sound that threatens to deafen the crew if they cannot communicate with it.

The other is about an Ambassador's pet, a strange cat like creature that causes the crew to become feral.

The record also contains a comic book that follows both stories. There are a few very strange things about the comic.

Sulu is African American in it. He isn't miscolored, he has afro like hair. Chekov is replaced by "Lt. Connors" a blond with a Russian accent.
Uhura is white and has blonde hair.

Why these bizarre changes? It doesn't seem to make any sense?

Also I was wondering if any of the rest of you have any interesting Star Trek records, and if this weirdness with changing up the characters is an ongoing thing.

This particular record was originally a TOS/TAS record, but was re-released to tie-in with the premiere of ST:TMP.

And written - those two stories, anyway, by Alan Dean Foster, who did the adaptations of TAS episodes for the "Star Trek Logs" books.

The other is about an Ambassador's pet, a strange cat like creature that causes the crew to become feral.
Notice that the cat is calmed by Lt M'Ress, the feloind Caitian of Filmation's TAS, but instead of resembling a cat lady, she is drawn like a green Orion woman (quite like Marta of "Whom Gods Destroy").

The record also contains a comic book that follows both stories. There are a few very strange things about the comic. Chekov is replaced by "Lt. Connors" a blond with a Russian accent.
In fact, Mr Connors is no doubt re-inked from drawings of the three-armed. three-legged Edoan, Mr Arex, of TAS - and even plays an Edoan musical instrument Connors just happened to have in his stateroom! Now, if you study Connors carefully, who coinsidentally resembles Decker from TMP (but just a coincidence), you can almost see where Arex's extra arm and extra leg were supposed to be!

They have to squeeze the name "Connors" into a few speech balloons that originally said "Arex".

Where do you get the Russian accent from? I don't recall one being suggested.

Why these bizarre changes? It doesn't seem to make any sense?
The rights to the characters of TAS were in flux at the time, so Arex and M'Ress had to be redrawn. While the artists were at it, they changed Uhura and Sulu as well. Hence, Sulu is African American, and Uhura is white and has blonde hair.

Also I was wondering if any of the rest of you have any interesting Star Trek records, and if this weirdness with changing up the characters is an ongoing thing.
Well, Arex and M'Ress had to be redrawn again - for DC Comics' Series II of their movie tie-in comics. M'Ress became an antelope woman, M'yra

and Arex became Ensign Futon, a skinny blue security guard.

Yep. For example, references to Romulans were often wrong. In "The Robot Masters", they were said to be living just outside the known galaxy. They were incorrectly depicted as having green skin and dark green hair.

And to think I had seen it all when it came to trek...I would die to be able to get a look at those old vinyl's..

Thank you for all of the information!

The voice of Mr. Connors on the record has a Russian accent, it isn't suggested in the comic itself.

In his adaptation of "The Eye of the Beholder" for Star Trek Log Eight, Alan Dean Foster makes reference to the events of "Passage to Moauv."

Nope, it was issue #24 of the Key Comics series.

Here's a link to a terrific page on the books:

Wow, thank you so much for this! Listening to it and being able to see the accompanying comic was great. In a way it felt like watching a lost episode of TOS (or TAS, at least). You know, the voice work isn't that bad. The guys doing Kirk and Spock are especially good, methinks.
