Star Trek VI soundtrack: Thoughts?

I agree. A good book and LP go hand in hand. There's just something ethereal in the way they invoke all the senses.

That's not entirely true. While vinyl was incredibly niche by the early to mid 90s. They never stopped making them. They became very rare and hard to find, of course, but I can think of several early 90s albums that saw original pressings off the top of my head.

Allow me to clarify my comment: I meant to say"it appears the Star Trek VI soundtrack was only released on CD and cassette." The earlier poster said they couldn't find a vinyl copy. And the reason is, it apparently wasn't released on vinyl.

I didn't mean to imply that NOTHING came out on vinyl in 1991, only that, in 1991, the Star Trek VI soundtrack was only released on CD and Cassette, and not on vinyl.

I remember the big brouhaha when the labels started releasing major albums on CD and not vinyl, around 1990. I'm a music collector, and was thrilled when the crappy, scratchy vinyl put out by the U.S. labels went the way of the dodo. Because a CD is infinitely better than any major-label released vinyl album of the '80's. They were crap. Cassettes were worse, but that's a different rant. ;)

However, since film soundtracks were a niche of their own, having a niche of a niche didn't make any financial sense.

And, even with the vinyl comeback, soundtracks are still on the outside looking in. Even something like Guardians--which was ripe for a wide vinyl release--only put out a pressing that was so rare that, only four months later, has become painfully expensive.

For a while, I was hoping those guys who did those awesome SEs of the Trek OST a while back would put out vinyl versions, but alas.

Silva Screen has put out a number of vinyl Doctor Who albums-- including for the classic series. I was amazed, but they keep on doing it, so they must sell!

I'm glad to see so many positive comments about this score. I was beginning to think I was the only person who enjoys it! I listen to the entire (originally released) CD without skipping tracks, which is unusual for me. I haven't purchased the expanded release yet, but I need to...actually I need to for all of the Trek scores that have been released! I just love how unique this score is among the Trek film scores.

Except for a few musical cues (i.e. Clearing Moorings and "The Battle For Peace" and the End Credits), I was relatively unimpressed with this soundtrack. My favorite Star Trek scores are from TWOK, TSFS, and FC (which are also, coincidentally, my favorite ST movies).

I must admit, took me a while to appreciate TUC's music. I grew up in the 80's and 90's and was a full fledged Trekkie when I was 11 and TUC came out. By then, I was in love with the Goldsmith and Horner stuff and the TUC music was too different for me. But as I aged, I more and more appreciated the different tone they were going for.

I wouldn't say it's my favorite score, but I do very much like it.

Speaking of Trek movie scores, I really like ST4 as well, even though it, too, is a departure from Goldsmith and Horner's work. I feel it is the one which sounds (apart from the picture) the most like classical music of the early 19th Century. I like it very much. (In general, most all of my favorite music is either classical or film score. I like rock too, but less so.) EXCEPTION: in the ST4 soundtrack album, there is a contemporary arrangement of the score played on saxophone and the rest of the smooth, easy listening jazz ensemble, and listening to it makes me want to set myself on fire. I hate that SO MUCH! Worst musical recording ever associated with Star Trek if you ask me.

It's my favorite, alongside FC and GEN (the latter one being frequently shat on around here ;)).

You mean Ballad of the Whale? I dunno...I kinda should hate it but I just don't!

Did you ever see Wayne's World 2? If not, I don't blame you, it was mostly forgettable. But the scene where Garth is at a Kenny G concert and is have dental work done with no anesthesia? That pretty much is my exact reaction when exposed to that genre of music.

Brilliant stuff besides that one track, though.
