Star Trek V: The Final Frontier Director´s Cut Petition

Change sometimes (all the time?) asks for cash to promote whatever the petition is on affiliate sites or through marketing or something. I did it once for the Rehire James Gunn petition and they asked for cash then. I gave it.

As to this petition. I love Trek 5 for what it is, which is something the best I can think of as the B grade version of a much better film. There's lots of little nice moments in it but there's no way I'd ever want to see a Director's Cut of this very flawed film. It won't fix dumb moments like the fan dance or Scotty smashing his face on some beam or just the dumb way that God just gets shot to death by the Enterprise and the Klingon ship or Spock reverting back to his persona at the start of Trek 4 with his character development by the end of that film thrown in the bin. At best we get the rock monster, which Galaxy Quest already did much better, and some SFX change, which I've already seen guys on Youtube do really well. There's a better film in this material that's possible with a few more drafts of the script and being more respectful to the crew and it will never happen.

Petitions won't go anywhere, but I think a fan who's an editor and has a passion for that movie could gain access to whatever is available and proceed on remastering it, including the footage left over. Go through the production notes and make an unofficial edit, like those Star Wars fan restorations online which I thought were impressive. It would be nice if Shatner had some interest in returning but I think he's long over that venture and so is Viacom.

I could do it but i don´t have any access to the original camera negative or the aditional footage. Only Paramount/Viacom has the needed stuff and they wouldn´t be giving it to random people. Even without the OCN you still need to get access to the prduction notes and the list of changes that were proposed by William Shatner when he tried to make this.

I'm wondering how in depth TTF making of book was about the production? It could give some clues.

perhaps re shoot some scenes with actors of the same height and use cgi "masks" like terminator genisys to eliminate some cringworthy scenes?

That would be a lot of money to outlay. You could make a whole new project or several for that price. Maybe someone will get a hold of Shatner's original script and make a comic or animation or even just a documentary one day

Depending on the amount of people supporting it. We'll see.

There are literally only a hand full of examples where an online petition had any effect at all. The amount of these petitions out there compared to the amount that actually work out......Nope, ain't gonna happen.
What you need to realize is, this isn't some sort of moneymaking effort for the studio. The costs of creating it, compared to the handful of people that would buy it, means they'd be loosing money. And contrary to what many fans often believe, the studios basically give two things about fans: f*** and all.
No amount of 'but I want to believe it could happen' will make this happen.

Heh. True story. Although, you have to admit, this year the amount of nutjobs out there willing to believe anything seems to be at an all time high
I think there are just more outlets thus making us more aware of what's always happening.

I'd love to see it, but petitions aren't going to make it happen. I mean, there's no harm whatsoever it signing one. But just be aware of the facts that a petition won't make it happen.

The only way you'd see a DC of TFF is if the studio thought there was a market for it.

I do believe there are some fans, myself included, that would buy one in a second. Many fans have a soft spot for TFF and the lousy effects are a sore spot for the film. TFF sticks out like a sore thumb among the other 12 films. The other 12 films vary a bit in how good the effects are--but they all at least have competent effects. I would love to see TFF at least brought up on par with the other 12.

I also think decent effects could be made very inexpensively this day and age. CGI has come a long way in just the last 10 years. Shatner I think asked for a million dollars last time--I doubt now it would even cost that much.

But would Paramount get a good return for it's investment?

Actually the best chance of any of this happening is if someone involved with a Star Trek production now who wants to see the same thing takes it to the PTBs and convinces them this could be done pretty inexpensively and a profit could be made (and maybe who has a demo of what they could do). That's probably the best hope. Someone on the team that decides to take up the challenge---then maybe you might see it happen.

Right now there's much more chance of seeing a Blu-Ray of TMP's DE (which I hope for as well). In that case because it was already done and just needs to be upgraded. I live in hope for that one---in fact I never picked up the Blu-Ray of TMP because I do think one day that will actually happen (though I will say the DVD copy of the TMP-DE I have, with my progressive scan on my DVD player, is actually pretty good--it's just maybe a step down from what a Blu-Ray would be).
