Star Trek V Reedit

I remember reading somewhere that a fan re-edited ST:V a few years back and made it into a pretty good film. Am I dreaming this? Or was ST:TMP? Because I try to like both of those movies and can't

It was Jack Marshall, who was one of the producers of the fan production "Star Trek: New Voyages", now called "Star Trek: Phase II". He wrote, directed, and played Scotty in the first episode, "Come What May". He was forced to play Scotty because the actor that was supposed to dropped out just before filming began. Jack Marshall left this fan production to join the special effects team of the new "Battlestar Galactica" tv series.

Anyway, he used to post in TOS Forum with co-producer James Cawley in late 2003 and early to mid 2004. I recall he said he recut "Star Trek 5" to look and sound like an episode of TOS and it was available, using internet "news groups". You could watch it online, but I don't think you could download it in its entirety. I think it used one of those programs you had to download where everyone else who downloaded the program had a piece of "Star Trek 5" on thier hard drive, so that it was distibuted across a network of PCs. I don't remember the software's name though.

Good luck,

More info on that edit here. Dig around on the fanedit.org site and you may even find a way to get your hands on the files in question... if, that is, you own a legit copy of the theatrical-version DVD. ;)

It would seem that TMP would be a much better candidate.

It is hard to edit out the bad when most of a film is bad.

TMP suffered from pacing problems which could be, for the most part, fixed with editing. Take out all the gratuitous reaction shots of the crew and V'Ger screensaver FX and I think you could bump up the pace considerably.

In my case, I simply reedited "Star Trek: Generations" and removed all the Classic Trek elements. Made for a good TNG episode, in fact. Showed it at a couple of room parties at Shore Leave, VulKon and a few other fan-run conventions to positive reaction.

Another fan I know did do ST:TMP, and changed some of the lines, especially Kirk to Decker: "Report to the bridge immediately, Ensign."

But I would LOVE to see Jack's version of Star Trek V: The Final Frontier some day.

Nah. I saw the first twenty minutes of a heavily edited (and very well-received on fanedit.org) TMP fan edit, and it was still almost entirely devoid of charm.

For all its faults, TFF has heart, which is why I'm looking forward to watching the Phase II edit.

Actually, I think the poster remembers hearing about this re-edit.

I have waited for this for years, and still am. I really hope he can finish it sometime soon.

TREK V definitely deserves a re-edit after 21 years of being the most flawed and disappointing of all the Kirk-era films. I had been hoping that Paramount would authorize and fund a CGI remastering of the film to clean up the crappy Bran Ferren f/x in the movie, but that's not likely to happen anytime soon.

Sow's Ear != Silk Purse.

I've seen a couple of "fan edits" of ST:TFF. The only virtue they bring to this brainless film is brevity.

Re-edit the script, then we'll talk

I have obtained a copy of the Jack Marshall cut of Star Trek V... and with respect to Jack, I have to say that the edit itself is not all that much to write home about. While it does remove some elements long maligned, it also removes many of the little character moments from the film that at least made it watchable. As is, the re-edit Jack did just plugs along by the numbers taking you from A to B to C with little joy or fun. Definitely an interesting experiment, and one I am trying to replicate with another Trek film on my own, but on the whole rather a letdown.

I agree. It's been while since I've seen it but I remember being disappointed with the choice of the cuts as well.

I have to point out a project I have been following that has been been adding videos to Youtube. Despite all of it's flaws I find myself mostly enjoying Trek V, but feel that some of the jokes are just too much and the Special Effects are painful to watch. I eventually read a Starlog article that explained and showed artwork for the planned ending with the gargoyles.

Absolutely agree, Star Trek V is salvagable, with or without Shatner involved.

Years ago when they started releasing the special edition DVDs, Shatner wanted to do a director's cut of TFF like they did for TMP. Evidently there is tons of footage that explains what the plot should have been, but no special effects to go with it. But Paramount gave him the finger. For that reason I didn't buy TFF, but I did get it for free later on.

I agree with Yarn that an edit of TMP makes more sense, since the problem with TMP is really pacing and length, whereas that is decidedly NOT the case for TFF, which suffers from a poorly conceived and executed plot, inappropriate humor, substandard special effects, lack of story logic, etc. I mean how do you edit THAT away and be left with much?

I just read the novelization of Star Trek V, and I found it much more enjoyable than the film.

I'd love to see a new version of the film with updated special effects, like they did for the original series. Also, it would be interesting if some scenes of Sybok as a child were added, similar to what they did with the Godfather in Godfather 2.

This has nothing to do with the "Star Trek 5" re-edit, but here is a link to actor/comedian Kevin Pollak's stand-up routine of "Star Trek 5: The Search for Cash" performed in 1989 while "Star Trek 5: The Final Frontier" was being made.

Link--> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_kZJJUc4mQ

In it Kevin impersonates:

Bill Shatner as Capt. Kirk
Robin William's Mork from Ork as Chekov
Christopher Lloyd's Reverend Jim Ignatowski (from Taxi) as Spock
Jack Nicholson as Dr. McCoy
Dudley Moore's Arthur as Scotty.

He should have played the alien role as Christopher Walken, perhaps he didn't have that impersonation honed yet.
