Star Trek TMP Rober McCall

According to the article in the Star Trek Magazine magazine (Dec 2001) Robert McCall worked on conceptual painting for the images spock would see in his spacewalk, those paintings were then used as a basis for the models that were then built by Greg Jein. The original article states that at one stage Doug Trumbull wanted to use those painting in the film but that the end result was not satisfactory hence the building of the models. However, in all of the DVD Commentary tracks for both Star Trek the Motion Picture and the Directors Edition, Doug Trumbull and Daren R Docterman indicate that some of those concept drawings were elaborated on by McCall and actually used. Does anyone know which is correct?

I think it's a mixture. The distant backgrounds in some of the shots sure smack of McCall's artwork, but they clearly couldn't use paintings for a lot of what was portrayed, because the flatness of the artwork would not had worked when the camera had to fly into and through various elements, like the "space lips" and the "plasma energy conduit", etc.

I was impressed by his artwork for TMP. It was quite colorful on many levels.

He was an excellent painter. I've seen some of his other works concerning the future, science fiction, and manned space flight.

His poster for 2001: A Space Odyssey is definitely my favorite.
