STAR TREK. THUNDER!!!: About the guys that aren't important!

Capt_Pickirk

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
This was originally in the future of trek forum but I've decided to move it here as it seems better suited to this kind of forum :)

I was looking up on the period in trek history after 'The Earth-Romulan war' and before 'The Cage' (roundabout sometime in 2200s-2210s) and was rather surprised to find that pretty much nothing has been created that is set in that period of time.

I got thinking about what stories could be told and who the main characters would be like. Rather than going with the bravest of the brave and the best in fleet and all that jazz (even though I do like those stories) I thought it would be interesting to show the trek universe from a different perspective, looking at it from the middle-man's point of view.

The kind of people the flag-ship would've casually flown past and not bat an eyelid.

The series would be called Star Trek: Thunder (or some other name that would sound better) and be set on the Transport vessel 1003 nicknamed 'thunder' by the crew of the ship.

Set in the 2211, the series would follow the adventures of the 'thunder' through various different stories, with it's commander, Captain Jacob Ash previously captain of another vessel where all crew-members but him and Dr Christopher Stiles were brutally killed by a crew-member gone insane from Transporter Psychosis in 2209.

They later moved on to another ship, 'Thunder', still scarred by their experience both have a fear of the transporter and refuse to use it, taking shuttle-crafts instead.

The new crew-members they gain are,

Cmdr 'Mr' Thalar, a 'by the book' Andorian First officer and Tactical Officer.

Lt Cmdr Roman Rutkowski, a Polish chief engineer and pretty much the only engineer on the ship (it's a small vessel about the size as the defiant from DS9 but most of the space is for cargo)

Lt. Maria Reed, descendant of Malcolm Reed and Communications officer

Ensign. Edward Pike, dunno what he'll do, I'll think of something

A couple of my story ideas that I thought I'd share. Bear in mind these are the very bare bones of the stories and not the whole 'shebang'. please critique and add your own ideas:

"Star light, star bright"
A vessel warps through the Banfi Delta system causing huge gravitational disturbances and ripping the two planets in that system apart.
The THUNDER and it's crew are in the area when the huge gravitational disturbance shakes the ship, the crew move the THUNDER to a safe distance and discover that the disturbances were created by a ship warping through the Banfi star-system. Captain Ash orders pursuit of the unidentified craft. Due to the gravitational disturbances they are forced to go round the system at warp three. They head round, then they receive a distress signal from a nearby starbase, the ship is going to head near them before heading through a inhabited star system. The THUNDER heads at warp 7 towards the ship. They manage to catch up to the ship but are unable to place a tractor beam around it (some magnetic thing or something). They realize that it is in fact a weapon from the romulan war, the STARLIGHT, a Nuclear Bomb that was strapped to a warp engine and was programed to warp to Romulus and obliterate the planet. The ship some how got sent of course at the launch and starfleet had assumed it had been destroyed. Captain Ash quickly orders a phaser burst to create a warp core breach, this happens but it also activates the bomb's nuclear device creating a huge explosion crippling the THUNDER. The shock wave pushes the THUNDER backwards at high speed to an unknown destination

"Crippled"
The THUNDER, still crippled (not even thrusters work, the artificial gravity keeps playing up), is heading towards a huge gas giant that, because the shields are no longer active, will crush the vessel. It is a race against the clock to get the ship working again. The Crew try to reroute power through the dilithium crystals, however the crystals have fractured meaning that they have no means of propulsion. They then get the idea of rerouting power through the deflector dish to bring back power to the impulse engines. They do this and it works, just in the nick of time, they fly away at maximum impulse.

"That Sea-Blue Ale"
Whilst having the THUNDER's systems repaired at a starbase, the crew spend some time on the station. The crew of the THUNDER meet a few merchants that have managed to smuggle various objects across the Klingon and romulan borders, such as Klingon Coffee (Raktajino) and a strange blue ale. A few minor officers try the ale and decide to trade it for a few minor possessions. The THUNDER, fully repaired, and restocked with dilithium crystals flies away from starbase to a future location. Slowly, everyone on the ship tries the blue ale and are very quickly intoxicated by it's effects. Members of the crew do various drunken things, whilst sober members of the crew try to get back to starbase. The ship arrives at the starbase but nearly everyone there is drunk too, and the merchants are missing. Mr Thalar, is able to track the merchant's impulse trail from their ship and the THUNDER gives chase. When the merchant ship is within visual range Captain Ash contacts them and demands to know what this blue ale is that they got. The merchants reveal that it is Romulan Ale, a very potent and addictive drink that works on the body very quickly. Mr Thalar and Commander Reed beam the rest of the Romulan Ale into space and destroy it with their phasers then issuing a reprimand upon the merchant ship and basically telling them to piss off.

The first two sound good, the third sounds a little silly. Perhaps one of the comedic installments.

I remember reading somewhere that it's best to avoid descendent's of heroes. Not that it will be a bad thing for yours, but they tend to be super awesome at everything because they are trying to live up to the previous heroes status. I wish I could remember where I read that though...

Yeah, I wasn't planning on going with the whole

'Whoa!!!! Check out this guys decendant!! WOOWWW!!!! SHE's SUPA-AWESOME LOL!!!!' kinda thing.

If anything she would be a much more flawed character. maybe trying to live up to the standards everyone sets her because of her heritage.

Oh and also. Yes the third one is a little silly, sort of in the vein of episodes like 'The trouble with tribbles' and 'Take me out of the holosuite'

story idea

"THUNDER" (pilot episode)

A Klingon ship, the k'tagk, attacks the SS LEONARDO, a cargo vessel, leaving no survivors.

Starfleet does not learn of this for several weeks.

THUNDER is one of the last Dyson-class cargo vessels to be built, under the command of Captain Jacob Ash. Because of the growing number of worlds wishing to join the Federation and a limited number of ships, it is rushed to to stop the klingons from doing any more harm. The ship has a few new crew members added to it's roster and they eventually head to where starfleet believes their next attack point will be.

THUNDER encounters the k'tagk, the ship contains no crew. It is in fact a drone ship, a experiment using technology stolen from romulan vessels, during the Earth-romulan conflict, as part of a new Klingon offense plan. The ship is destroyed by Captain Ash and his crew to stop any more chaos. With this crisis over the THUNDER embarks on a six year mission.

"The Orion Incident"

The THUNDER is ordered to escort the USS Australia, a new Asia-class vessel, to a testing ground near Betelgeuse IV. Things go wrong on route when the ship is boarded by orion pirates and hijacked. Chief engineer Remming and Lt Cmdr Reed are the only two officers that are on board the ship (The ship was to be fully staffed at Betelgeuse IV). Remming manages to stop the ship, and send a subspace signal letting the THUNDER know where they are, but Reed is captured. Remming uses all of his intelligence and a bit of fighting to evade the orions, he manages to free Reed. A small group of Andorian vessels that was in that sector hear the signal, arrive and beam aboard, a firefight in the corridors ensues, with the Andorians gaining the upper hand. The THUNDER arrives, thanks the Andorians and beams Reed and Remming aboard. Captain Ash notes that this crisis demonstrated nearly all of the tests that they were to perform at Betelgeuse IV and that it passed.

More story ideas.

"125 leagues above the sea"
The crew of the THUNDER goes to check up on an Aquabase on the planet Xerxes VII. Since the planet has had subspace radio silence for a couple of days now starfleet has equipped the crew with a few security officers. The officers don't particularly like Captain Ash's command approach.

Xerxes VII is a world entirely covered in water with a high amount of radiation, making scanning with sensors difficult.

Having got no response from base after hailing them they decide to beam down a few away teams to check out the area. The officers wear spacesuits, just in case of radiation poisoning. Captain Ash, Dr Pike and Lt.cmdr Reed head on down in a shuttle craft. They climb through a hatch into a console room with a couple of dead scientists, some with their necks broken, others having been shot with particle weapons, a few are missing. Three redshirts beam down into another area, but that area has been filled with water due to a large hole in the wall, so when they materialize their bodies and spacesuits fill up with water and they end up drowning. Captain Ash and the others try to save them but they are too late. The crew of the THUNDER wishes to beam the Captain and the two other officers up but Captain Ash wishes to find the other scientists first. They take an Aquashuttle from the Aquabase's shuttle bay and scout the rest of the nearby sea. Whilst under the water they detect an energy reading deeper under the sea. They take the shuttle down further, the shuttle withstanding the water pressure. They discover a large city under the sea. The inhabitants of the city, capture the shuttle and the three crew members. The crew discover that the people living under the water are the remnants of a race that fought a devastating war on their planet, resulting in the planet's polar ice caps melting and the irradiating the planet's atmosphere. A few neutral factions managed to escape the war by building a base underwater.

When the aquabase builders arrived the planet's inhabitants thought that the scientists were the aggressive factions coming to wage war on them. They created a pre-emptive strike on the aqua base and kidnapped some of the scientists. After they realised that the scientists were infact alien to them, they planned to reverse-engineer their technology to arm themselves so that no alien 'invaders' try to harm them. Lt Cmdr Reed, pretty pissed off, attacks a few of the captors. The others join in. They manage to retrieve the Scientists and flee the underwater city. They see that the Xerxesians have already taken apart the aqua shuttle so they try to find an alternate route of escape. Captain Ash is reluctant to use the transporter but realises they'll have to use it to escape (escape could explained by some prime directive stuff. Whatever) but they are unable to get a lock on their position because they are inside a radiation bubble thing. They find a hatch leading to the ocean and quickly unlock it. (it's a two door hatch) They are quickly swept out of the hatch and the transporter can beam them up. But the transporter beams up some of the water surrounding them causing water to flow all over the transporter pad.

Captain Ash quickly orders the destruction of the Aqua base, saying that to let it stay there would violate the prime directive (or something). The final scene shows Captain ash contacting the scientists and red shirts families to let them know of their loss.

"Let's see what you could've won”

The crew of the THUNDER is observing transmissions from an alien planet that is very much like the television shows that were broadcast in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. They beam down and end up in a recreation of a tacky 80s game show. However the show is quickly shown to be more than a show, it is in fact a competition to escape execution. Can the crew of the THUNDER escape with their lives as well as saving the rival teams???

Well. Yes
