The Red Sea Astrarium would be the first Star Trek attraction built outside the US (the Paramount Murcia Park is planned for 2015).

althought Murcia Park is in Spain and
therefore more of a Paramount-branded theme park than a Paramount theme park in it’s own right.

A litte bit weird place for a Star Trek Theme park. Anyone who booked a ticket to Jordan yet?

Re: 'Star Trek' theme park "The Red Sea Astrarium" in Jordan opens 201

The people who are flipping the bill for this are from Jordan, so naturally they get to decide where to build it.

IIRC, the King of Jordan is also a big-time Trekkie too...

Wait, where's the one IN the United States??? I never got to go to The Experience before it shuttered, and now that I can afford to take vacations, I've been looking for a place to go.

IIRC, "the King of Jordan" and "the people who are flipping the bill" are the same people. It's his park.

The King of Jordan is also the Rubicon Group Holding entertainment company?
It's his park.
Not so much as it's his country.

Maybe it's just the way our journalists are writing the stories...

King Abdullah has been given the green light to build a $1.5 billion theme park, with part of it dedicated to Star Trek.

He's definitely a big part of the group, though.
The main Jordanian investor is the King Abdullah Fund," Ms Ayoubi said, in reference to the King Abdullah II Fund for Development (KAFD).

Yep, that article did make it seem like King Abdullah is the one spearheading this, even though it's really the Rubicon Group. But as he is king of that nation, almost anything there probably would be credited to him in a general way, so it's likely not entirely inaccurate in that regard.

He's definitely a big part of the group, though.

The KAFD is not to be confused with King Abdullah himself, however.

The KAFD is a multi-faceted program dedicated to growth in Jordan. It bears King Abdullah's name because it was established by royal decree, but the King himself actually isn't an investor as some newsources are now learning.

CORRECTION NOTICE: An earlier version of [our] story wrongly stated the King of Jordan had invested in this project. The investment was made by the King Abdullah II Fund for Development and not the Monarch himself and this has been updated in this article.

Re: 'Star Trek' theme park "The Red Sea Astrarium" in Jordan opens 201

I hope Jordan is a safe enough country to visit when this park is finished because I have a feeling I'll have to go visit...

Can we get the King to underwrite a new Star Trek TVseries? It would be foolish of him to assume that Abrams' movies, once every frakkin three years, will bolster awareness of the brand enough to keep the park afloat, especially since they aren't particularly strong in overseas BO. The 67%/33% split for the most recent one is unusually skewed to the domestic BO; the standard nowadays is closer to 50%/50%.

funding

Funding has been secured for a $1.5 billion tourism and theme park development in Jordan, featuring a world-first Star-Trek inspired attraction.

The project - which will include four hotels and 17 entertainment developments – is being funded by investors from the United States and the Gulf region.

The Amman-based Rubicon Group, which makes animated films, said in May it would design and produce the entertainment elements of the resort.

http://www.breakingtravelnews.com/news/article/make-it-so-star-trek-resort-secures-funding/

and as reported in May 2011:
Architectural firm Callison has been engaged to work with Rubicon Group Holding and its team of visionaries, including Paramount Recreation and CBS, to master plan
and
The project is being helmed by Callison’s Mark Ludtka, Principal in Charge and Bill Lacey as Design Principal. The design team will be a collaboration across offices in the U.S. and the Middle East. Callison’s scope of work includes project vision and master planning through design development.
This should be interesting to see how it turns out in 2014.

Re: funding

This doesn't surprise me. After all, this is the same King Abdullah who, as Prince Abdullah, was such a big Trek fan that he appeared as an extra in an episode of Voyager.
