Star Trek Theamsong

regemet

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
I thught you might like the lyrics to Star Trek O S
Beyond the rim of starlight
My love is in star flight
I know his he find in star reaches
love strange lve a star woman teaches
I konw his journey ends never
His Star Trek will go on forever

I found this in the book The Makeing Of Star Trek
by Gene Rodenberry.

Re: Star Trek Themesong (Roddenberry's "contribution")

*sigh*

Old hat topic.

First of all it's "theme" not "theam" (whatever that is).

Second of all, those "lyrics" were written by Roddenberry just to get half of the royalties paid on the music. They were not written or sanctioned by composer Alexander (Sandy) Courage. The lyrics also suck...they don't even fit the tune well.

Best forgotten.

Re: Star Trek Themesong (Roddenberry's "contribution")

Hey.

This thread belongs in the TOS forum - our series specific discussion goes, not surprisingly, in the series specific forums.

Re: Star Trek Themesong (Roddenberry's "contribution")

IIRC, There was a clause that said Roddenberry could get royalties from the theme if he composed lyrics to it... so he did, they were never used, but that's why they're there, and it's also why Courage didn't do any more work for Star Trek.

regemet was correct the first time when writing 'theamsong'.
For this song is best listened to upon first rising up in the morning. It shall strengthen, uplift and help one to take on the day!
'TheAmSong' is most appropriate. Better than oatmeal.

Click on "Star Trek".

The theme with lyrics can sound pretty damned good, given talented artists like the ultra-hot Lola Bombay and a swanky theremin.

Thanks very much for the link, I hadn't heard that before, but they're hilariously bad. Seriously, the love a star woman teaches???!?!? I'm more and more convinced that Gene was continually being reined in from ruining his own creation.

Re: Star Trek Themesong (Roddenberry's "contribution")

When Roddenberry wrote "love a star woman teaches" he might have been thinking about Odysseus' trysts with Calypso and Circe, who taught him quite a bit about lovin'. Odysseus along with Captain Cook were conceptual models for Kirk.

In other words, I don't think it's the idea that was bad, just the phrasing. Roddenberry had a tin ear when it came to lyrics, and that's why it takes a very talented band to make the song sound any good.

Re: Star Trek Themesong (Roddenberry's "contribution")

I actually like the phrase "Beyond the rim of the starlight," but not the lyrics as a whole.

The lyrics given weren't the actual lyrics, nor are they exactly what was in the book.

I'm afraid there were some typos/braincramps involved.

The following came from funtrivia.com-

Beyond
The rim of the star-light
My love
Is wand'ring in star-flight
I know
He'll find in star-clustered reaches
Love,
Strange love a star woman teaches.
I know
His journey ends never
His star trek
Will go on forever.
But tell him
While he wanders his starry sea
Remember, remember me.

"Theme from STAR TREK"
Lyrics by Gene Roddenberry (1966)
Music by Alexander Courage

Or he might have been writing any old crap just to get 50% of the royalties. :p

Re: Star Trek Themesong (Roddenberry's "contribution")

Does any one know who wrote 'Beyond Antares' or those songs Uhura sang from 'Charlie X'. I really like 'Beyond Antares'.

Re: Star Trek Themesong (Roddenberry's "contribution")

That had to be one of the most underhanded moves by a producer. I am sure he or other producers have done worse but he is the only one who actually admitted it himself although un-apologetically.

Re: Star Trek Themesong (Roddenberry's "contribution")

Yep, at least he had the courage to admit he was being greedy. I'll give that to him.

And welcome to the board DAMjim. :)

The song "Beyond Antares" was written by Wilbur Hatch with lyrics by Gene L. Coon.

Now that I know they're safely not sung during the theme tune of the show and probably never will, I can say I actually enjoy hearing them
