It did indeed start as "The Tour", making it's debut in Long Beach, Ca. It ran for quite a few months (those in charge even extended it) before closing it's doors.
What happened next I'm not completely clear on, however someone can fill in the details. The Tour, being closed down, was undergoing a change in size...basically, the intent was to split the exhibit into two traveling shows so they could maximize profit (conjecture, but it makes sense). The unfortunate thing for those who would attend the, now re-titled, "Exhibition", was that everything seen at the first 'Tour' would no longer be available.
To give an example, I did happen to go to The Tour on it's first weekend. The San Diego Aerospace Museum is a decent-sized facility, but walking through the Exhibition was both ironic and confusing. It was ironic because the tour was practically 'sandwiched' inbetween other exhibits and planes (for instance, you'd be perusing the "History of the Future" timeline with an old WWI prop plane hanging over your head). Confusing, was because the entire exhibit was built around the previous attractions in the museum, so it was zigged-zagged throughout the first part of the building. This made it a little odd when doors that went to other parts of the Exhibition were left open, and there was a corridor to your right...you weren't sure which way to go.
Those two reasons, and also given the amount of things inside the museum, is a fair enough reason for why 'The Exhibition' was reduced in size. Unfortunately, this is the only Exhibition I'm aware of, being that the second half should have the Enterprise-D bridge...a mockup of the original Enterprise' bridge is at the SD Aerospace Museum. But, it was said that a second Exhibition would tour, however i have yet to see anything.
Still, it was enjoyable. I actually liked how they set it up, and the whole "irony" of walking through future technology and history whilst old French, German and American prop planes hung over your head added a bit of "What if?" nostalgia to the mix. I also liked how they had two original flights suit, one from Gemini and one from Apollo, inside the exhibit next to a rotating table with the refit-Enterprise on display.
I've got pictures if anyone would like to see them. Please enjoy!
