Star Trek : The Romulan Wars - still around?

Starhawk

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
Good morning and Happy New Years to everyone!

I have been scouring the Internet for the latest on "Star Trek: The Romulan Wars" fan film production and have come up empty. The website:

http://romulanwars.tekcities.com/

Is down, for whatever reason, and I haven't been able to find any new info on it.

Does anyone know anything about it?

Is it still going to be made or did it get canned?

TIA.

Starhawk

In case the folks who are making this happen upon this thread, here are my thoughts...

Not bad as a start! Suggestions:

* Remix the sound. The sound effects are way too loud at times. The bridge doors are especially loud.

* Work on the grammar in the dialogue.

* Act Three has two sections with expository dialogue that flash on the screen. This is both distracting and unnecessary. Show, don't tell.

* The communications officer is quite... young.

I have a feeling they don't do the CGI, they have it done for them and pay for it. I happened to stumble upon the CGI creators site but can't remember who it is.

I agree with the comment about the text explaining what is happening, so unnecessary...annoyingly so. As for the audio, it needs lots of work. And when they use 2 cameras on the bridge you can really tell that they aren't the same kind, stick to one and do it in cuts.

I am Lee Gartrell, Creator of ST The Romulan Wars. As for our SFX, we do all of our own fx and are currently working on 3 other fan productions. As for whats on youtube, this is our first attempt and id didn't turn out like we wanted so we are going back an redoing the whole first episode with revamped sets and many new sets. This production is strictly out of my pocket and i wasn't going to spend alot of money on it untill i seen how it would look.
As for the website,,we have lost it and are now trying to get one back up and www.romulanwars.com with in the next few weeks if all works out. Any questions or if you like to help or NEED help with sfx; contact me

I'm not much for the idea of doing war on Trek, but I rather enjoyed this. It obviously doesn't have the polish or resources of a New Voyages, but it clearly has dedicated people who want to make Trek and have fun. It's one of those "little productions that could". Reminds me of Tales of the Seventh Fleet (I wonder how those guys are doing?).

The dialogue was very thoughtfully written. I like the little bits of personality that pop up now and then. I particularly love the divorced Captain angle- I don't think we've really seen that in Trek. I hope it turns out that the Captain is somewhat in the wrong- not quite the parent he should be- an interesting human flaw which could be fleshed out (and later resolved) in future episodes.

Now I will criticize them!

-"Space, the Final Frontier" I keep complaining about this, because everyone keeps using it! Stop opening your shows with this! Come up with an original opening!

Speaking of being unoriginal and re-using things, enough with the DRYDOCK SEQUENCES! Even the original in ST: TMP was too long, and that was unveiling one of the coolest starship designs ever! To make it even less original, I believe you used the same music? It's been done in so many fanfilms and even Trek audio productions.

As for the ship, I found the design too advanced for the Romulan War period, but the NX-01 was anachronistic, unoriginal and wrong too, and you obviously loved "Enterprise", so I'm sure this crit will fall on deaf ears. It would have been so awsome if your series took place on a Daedelus class ship! (Never mind me, enjoy your ship...)

-the Romulan's plasma torpedo sure seemed to move s-l-o-w-l-y.

-the credits seemed long to me. Seeing your name on screen is more interesting to you than it is for others.

Some of the dialogue was hard to hear. For example, the first officer's. The sound needs a lot of work.
I love that most of the crew has Southern accents (I assume as a result of wherever this is filmed), but what kind of accent is the Doctor supposed to have? If it's fake (British?), it could use a little work.

I assume the text that pops up in two scenes is just temporary placeholders for missing FX or edits. Otherwise it was unecessary.

Okay, I'm done. I read that you're re-doing the episode, I hope you take what you've already done, and the critiques of armchair quaterbacks like me, as learning experiences, and push forward with the same enthusiasm as you've already shown. I can't wait to see more from you guys!

One thing that I find annoying with this production, and I didn't care for in "Enterprise" either, is the presumption that the Romulans had the Cloaking Device during the Earth-Romulan War.

The feeling I got from the TOS episode "Balance of Terror" was that the cloaking device was a NEW development. If they had had it during the war Earth wouldn't have had a chance. How can you fight, or stop, an enemy you can't find?

I agree that the sound needs reworking and some of the special effects. Hopefully since they are redoing the first part they will improve what they've done.

The cloaking device was, without any doubt, new and unknown in Ballance of Terror. Spock, Kirk, and Stiles (the Romulan War history expert and desendant of the Captain in ST:TRW) were completely surprised by it. Berman and Braga once again showed their ignorance of and disdain for the Original series, as well as the general laziness and lack of imagination and originality that made Enterprise such a disaster.

The creators of ST:TRW clearly embrace Enterprise's continuity, so their Romulans of course have the cloak. Me, I'd prefer to see the Romulan War without anything from Enterprise- no cloaks, phasers, transporters, NX-01's (or other anachronistic ships), etc. But that's just me. I'll still watch theirs, and I'll stop complaining about it.

Hello again,
I have read what you wrote before and thought it was time to add my thoughts. First, we are following Enterprise yes but, like you I believe the cloaking device wasn't seen until TOS. We have been working and learning through trial by fire. In other words learning as we go. In our series,,their won't be a TRUE cloaking device but,a form of stealth technology. No invisible ships. You will either see them come out of nebula's, hiding in the poles of planets or use the tech of making there ship look different than its true form. We have redone Episode 1 and now have episode 2. Episode 3 will be our first true episode (I think) with a true feel of STAR TREK. We went back to the drawing board, pulled actors and crew in to make this series work. We have redone our uniforms and we will even have several new sets. Green screen is great but theres nothing to compare to a real set i think. The uniforms are replicas from the Enterprise tv show that makes the series look more authentic. We aren't trying to change Star Trek cannon,,but more to go along with whats been made. As for the ship. The design had to come from somewhere and We thought ours would be a good missing link between Enterpise NX-01 and Enterprise NCC-1701. In our story,Their was only one Yorktown ship made, put on the shelf and then pulled out after the war started. In future seasons of any,we will introduce
Datailius class ships and will focus more on the STAR TREK lore as to so much the war. Why the Romulans thought they should attack earth and what they were willing to do to make it happen. What are the Romulans about, their heritage, their beliefs, and why they parted from the Vulcans. Story ideas that we wanted to do. Not another starship in the time of TOS or TNG. Something new for all to enjoy and say; Thats Star Trek!
We are far from perfect and I myself feel I will get alot of criticism but, We have started a trek; Where no one has Gone Before. We always welcome ideas, opinions and email from anyone who would like to put their 2 cents in and help make our series better. And with this, Direct your attention to our site: www.stromulanwars.com Tell us what you'd like to see in this era. Tell us any ideas or knowledge you've found on this era. We definately need all the help we can get. And to the people that have followed us as we've fought to get this far; Thank You. And thank you Mr John Hazzard. We really do appreciate your insiteinto our series and your crit. It can only help us do better in the future.
