Star Trek: The Perseus Arm

Lorna

Lieutenant Commander
A map is required to understand why I've called it what I've called it: LINK

Federation space is located IMO on the Orion Spur along with Klingon space. I believe Cardassian and Romulan space are located on a section of the Sagittarius arm. See my map in the first sentence to understand what I mean. The map I've shown will be used significantly on screen during the series.

This series is going to be based around exploration of the Perseus Arm of the Galaxy.

The series starts when some kind of subspace shockwave knocks out warp drive for thousands of lightyears but more significantly throughout the entirety of Federation space. Warp drive is offline only for a couple of minutes but all ships at warp were knocked to sublight speeds.
Starfleet uses data from sensors throughout the Federation to locate the epicentre of the shockwave. They conclude the epicentre is located within the Perseus Arm of the Galaxy.

Starfleet wastes no time in deploying a vessel to locate the epicentre and find out what it was, if it was a weapon then something needs to be done. The USS Sisko is chosen for the mission, primarily because it's a new state of the art exploration vessel but also because it's designed to be a backup warship and is heavily armed just incase muscle is required.

The USS Sisko sets course but is not alone. The shockwave affected the entire Alpha Quadrant and beyond, it's got the attention of many other races. The Klingons and Romulans just to name a few are also sending ships to investigate.

Along the journey to get to the epicentre these ships run into each other and it's not always a hi how are you doing. For example, the Romulans are hoping this is a weapon and that they can get their hands on it whereas the Federation wants whatever it is destroyed so it can't be used as a weapon. This will cause conflict within the series.

Now, to just give the series a bit more explanation.
The shockwave was caused by an Iconian subspace dampener. An enormous piece of technology designed to shut down subspace throughout the entire Galaxy. The power requirement for this device however is huge and requires over a hundred Omega particles to power it.
The Iconians built the device to protect themselves. They did not need subspace because their doorway technology bypassed it. By shutting down subspace for warp travel their hope was to prevent other races from using warp drive, leaving the Iconians the only race left in the Galaxy capable of intergalactic travel.

The Dampener has been discovered by a race known as the Peacekeepers.
The peacekeepers are obsessed with keeping the peace between other empires and civilisations. A large section of the Perseus arm, at least 10,000 lightyears is controlled by the peacekeepers. They are an advanced race who do not tolerate any form of aggression.
Their ships use dimensional tunnelling for travel meaning their ships enter another dimension instead of using subspace. The peacekeepers have decided to switch on the subspace dampener because it will mean they can successfully keep the peace throughout the entire Galaxy.
Initially switching on the dampener caused an initial shockwave but the power requirement of the device was too much and it ran out of power after just 2 minutes.

The peacekeepers are now preparing to create Omega particles to power the device. This will give the USS Sicko time to locate the device within the series.

I said previously that it caught the attention of many races. Well that also includes the Borg in the Delta Quadrant. The Borg has despatched cubes to the Perseus Arm to also locate the epicentre. Within the series the Borg get wind of the Omega particles and well, I'm sure you can guess what might happen next.

Seems to have borrowed a touch from my own Star Trek: Generation 3. ;)

I sometimes read from the bottom of a post up, and your hero ship is the USS Sicko. Took me a second to figure that one out. :D

Everything you laid out seems like a show I would watch. The only thing I don't like is the name of the hero ship. Too all-in-the-family. All of the history of all of the worlds of the Federation to pull from, and she's just coincidentally named after the lead from DS9?

I like to use naming conventions and dice rolls to avoid stuff like that, myself. I'll figure out what the purpose of the ship is (in your case, it seems to me, Explorer/Heavy Cruiser), figure out where they were built (local culture sometimes plays into naming the class, I figure), create a class name and convention, make a short list of ship names that fit the convention, and then roll dice to pick the name of my particular ship. That is actually how I ended up with my screenname here (and fan fiction hero ship name), USS Triumphant. :techman:

oops.

The name of the ship isn't important really, can be anything. I just put Sisko as name temporarily because I could not think of a good ship name.
I was going to call it the USS Perseus but It would be too co-incidental that it's called Perseus travelling to the Perseus galactic arm.

If it was part of a task-force of the same class of Explorer/Heavy Cruisers that were built, specifically, to explore the Perseus Arm, then I could see it - and your hero ship could just happen to be the nearest to the epicentre when it is detected. BUT, it might get a little confusing in dialogue. Maybe a ship list like the following, instead?:

Vespucci Class, Atreus Build list (or maybe just Atreus Class) -

NCC-112350 U.S.S. Atreus
NCC-112351 U.S.S. Eurystheus
NCC-112352 U.S.S. Heracles
NCC-112353 U.S.S. Perses
NCC-112354 U.S.S. Alcaeus
NCC-112355 U.S.S. Heleus
NCC-112356 U.S.S. Mestor
NCC-112357 U.S.S. Sthenelus
NCC-112358 U.S.S. Electryon
NCC-112359 U.S.S. Cynurus
NCC-112360 U.S.S. Gorgophone
NCC-112361 U.S.S. Autochthoe
NCC-112362 U.S.S. Alcmena

The name of the show/series could be Star Trek: Hercules, the hero ship could be the Heracles, and maybe the name inspires some plot ideas involving 12 great tasks that the ship and crew will accomplish in the process of searching for the device? ;)

You could even have the nearest Starfleet outpost - the one that their mission was launched from - be called Outpost Mycenae, to keep with the theme. I doubt you want them visiting anywhere near known civilization very often, though.

I'm looking at using several different races in the series who are all after finding the device responsible. Some turn out to be valuable allies but others the complete opposite.

We will see a recurring role for both the Klingon ship and the Romulan ship. At some point there is even a Ferengi ship looking to see if there is profit in finding this possible technology.

As far as the peacekeepers are concerned everything has gone painfully wrong. They realise that they've essentially sent out a beacon saying 'come and find me' and they know everyone is coming to investigate. As a result the peacekeepers have become even less tolerant of aggression and closed the peacekeeper border to anyone trying to get in.

With all these empires and races sending ships to investigate it's going to get awfully crowded out there, ;)

Nah:

"Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind- bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space." - Douglas Adams ;)

Nice choice of quote ;) but seriously, they're all heading for the same place so they'll all bump into each other. :)

Here you go, I even designed 2 peacekeeper ships:

and here is the peacekeeper uniform.

^Those are really cool. See this is an idea I can get behind. I really like the name USS Perseus. It kind of has a nice mythological overtone to it, as does Sisko of course but maybe Perseus can be the new flag ship?

Sometimes I wonder if other people can even read the things that I post....

Someone has mentioned before that the captain of the series ship needs to be Human in order for the audience to connect more with the series. I concur with this conclusion but I also believe the second officer needs to be Human also. So the Captain and Number 1 will be Human.

Captain: Human (Male)
First Officer: Human (Female)
Tactical: Andorian (Female)
Helm: Tellerite (Male)
Comm: Vulcan (Male)
Science: Bolian (Male)
Engineering: Betazoid (Female)

I think it might be interesting to have the bridge crew composed of the founding members of the Federation.

Interesting crew members, what about your CMO? It seems a doctor would be of vital importance on a mission like this.

I really like this idea. It's unique with a story arc - something I enjoy with long series.

As suggested already the U.S.S. Sisko sucks! lol I wouldn't name any ship after an established Trek hero, it just has a fan boy element to it, I love the idea of such a huge weapon being created. It shows what a nasty bunch the Iconians were.

Regarding the crew. I think it's nonsense that the captain has to be human so the audience can relate to them. For instance in my own spin off series http://trekbbs.com/showthread.php?p=4323780 the captain is Suliban but uses his genetic enhancements to appear human to put the crew at ease. I think it's just as good to be able to relate to how the other crew react to this character. Plus when you write a character, you can convey the emotions in the narrative. Whereas when you watch it on screen you only get the actors reaction- depending on the acting ability of the cast. So it's arguably better to relate to a character whom you write about their thoughts and feelings, something you rarely experience on screen.

As much as I think this is an amazing plot, a story has to be about the characters primarily. So I'll be interested in how you make them into flesh and blood

Good luck with this.

In a way this reminds me of Enterprise. They went into that Expanse to destroy that weapon and they did it in one season. This sounds like a one Season type thing, but no reason for your hero ship to go on a mission into a sort of 5 year mission. Perhaps this whole series is like Farscape but in reverse. Instead of the Peacekeepers chasing the hero ship the Hero ship is always chasing them. But that can also get old so you have to have filler episodes.
