Star Trek: the original series 365- ABRAMS

Miss Mess

Lieutenant Junior Grade
Red Shirt
I have recently purchased the newest Star Trek, original series non-fiction book:

STAR TREK 365: the original series- by Paula M. Block with Terry J. Erdmann ( introduced by D.C. Fontana) and an ABRAMS publication.

I had no idea it even existed untill I ecstatically stumbled upon it in a local book shop and bought it, less than a minute later.

I love it...mainly due to the fantastic APPARENTLY never before released stills and photos, since i've so far read very little of it.

I did however, being the horribly picky little fan i am, spot a couple of quote misprints, from what i've read so far.

Does anyone else own it? If so, what's your opinion?

I'm curious about this book even though it has a horribly cover with the Enterprise looking distorted or broken, like the cover image of the AMT model kit.

haha hey, you're right. I still think it's gorgeous though. Before this purchase I never owned any hard cover ST books. The back covers cool. If I take it merely from a shallow, easy going viewpoint, i'm very happy with it. However my main problem so far is that the writer seems to be completely biased. I prefer my star trek info straight up, unless the viewpoints approached are discussed, line by line, by the actors and creators of ST original themselves. But like i said, i'll reserve my judgement for when ive actually finished reading the book.

This book sounds interesting I'll have a look and might buy it. That's what I find so interesting about TOS i,m always looking for new info and pics any good ideas for books for me drool over ?

Are you into the star trek paperpacks? I know there are some simply horrific ones, but buried underneath the pile of barely readable fanfic, theres a few gems, from what i've read so far, which is only 10 books out of like 75 i think. I highly recommend 'Renegade- Gene Deweese' and ' The Rift- Peter David'.
Also, on the novel-side of things, the classic memoir, ' Star Trek Memories- William Shatner' i really enjoyed. Heaps of funny little facts I never knew.
Can you recommend anything? My search for good Star Trek merchandise also seems to be a never-ending task. Though i've gotta admit, i'm pretty easily pleased when it comes to ST :)

I'll keep them in mind I've been reading some graphic novels as I now own iPhone I'm also interested in the old 70,s comic series of star trek published by gold key some of the stories are very intresting. The cartoon images are sometimes a bit odd and out of place the phasers look like 50,s ray guns and the uniforms are different but all the characters are all in place.

Oh miss mess look around for a books that they bought out for the 25th Anner I think they released three books for each TOS season there good reads great storys to read like the doomsday machine amok time and all the others from the TOS .

Guees I've been out of the book game too long and have discussed ST09 too often. When I saw the thread title I thought "Oh god! What has JJ done now?!!"

Thanks for the suggestions Nero's shadow :) I've never really gotton into comic books but i think ill give them a try in star treks case.

Hey Miss Mess, welcome to the Trekbbs, and the best forum of all, the TOS forum :techman:

I prefer non-fiction books, so I'm very much looking forward to Trek 365 - can I ask where you found it? (You can private message me if you want). I thought it was a while away.

I'll give my highest recommendation to Inside Star Trek : The Real Story by Herb Solow and Bob Justman. If you're interested in the behind the scenes aspects of TOS, this is as good as it gets. Many people confirm that this book was exactly 'how it happened'.

As for fiction, hmmm...i'll have to look through my shelves for you, I haven't read anything for years, but the last series I really enjoyed was a trilogy about Khan's life before and after Space Seed - really entertaining stuff. The novelizations of ST2:TWOK and ST3:SFS are worth a look too.

Well Botany Bay, I live in Australia and was seriously surprised when i discovered it. I googled it and everyone seems to be under the impression that it isn't coming out until like september this year, which is weird...I picked it up straight from my local bookshop.
Anyway, i just flicked through it for the 50th time and love it even more than when i originally got it. It's great. So many fantastic classic photos ive never seen before.
It's more of a photographic book, a 'visual celebration' of Star Trek: the original series, in their own words, but so far i've also come across some fascinating factoids i was never previously aware of. Nice selection of classic quotes too. All in all, i'm sure you'll love it :)
Oh cool...ive never heard of 'Inside star trek:the real story', I'll definately check it out. Have you read William Shatner's recent biography, 'Up till now'? Very entertaining.

Thank you so much for the suggestions.

I'm in Australia too, right next to Botany Bay in fact ;)

Haven't read 'Up Till Now' yet, but I have read Shatner's Star Trek Memories, and his Movie Memories - good fun, and worth a look, but very much TOS as Shatner remembered it

I googled up those Khan books, they're called The Eugenics Wars 1, The Eugenics Wars 2, and To Reign In Hell, and their author is Greg Cox.

If you like the episode "City On The Edge of Forever", and are a fan of Bones, you should check out Crucible :McCoy by David R. George.

Oh, and my favourite authors when I was a kid were Peter David and Michael Jan Friedman - any of their TOS books are worth a read.

Hope you can track them down - not sure some of these are even in print now!

Wow really :) I was sadly under the impression that Australia was practically devoid of Trekkers. Yup, i've recently read Shatner's star trek memories and really enjoyed it.
I love Peter David. He is by far my favourite original series author so far. Great characterization, and very funny.

Thnx, I'll check out the rest.

YOu need to contact a poster named Therin of Andor. I'm pretty sure he's Trek Fan #1 in Australia. ;)

^He's certainly the most prominent.

As for fandom in Australia, I recommend checking out "Trekkies 2"; they make a couple of stops in Melbourne and Sydney.

Apparently the book is only out in Australia so far. Who knows why? See the entries related to it in the Trek Literature section of this BBS. Guess the rest of the world will have to wait till September!
