Star Trek: The Next Generation - Raven's Call

scorpion1117Enterprise.jpg

screen1.jpg

Captain Picard studied the viewscreen, taking in the sight before him. Part of him was secretly glad at seeing someone take out the Borg; the more immediate part, however, was frightened at what this 'someone' might have the potential to do to his ship and crew. He returned to his command chair, commenting, "Someone more powerful than the Borg...it's difficult to imagine..."

"But they seem to have taken out fifteen cubes..." Perrin said from her science console, with a voice laced with curiosity and awe at the feat. She leaned over the outer console to take a better look at the main viewscreen. "It's possible we may have just found ourselves a way through Borg space, if we can ally ourselves with them..." she said to no one in particular.

"Whoever it is," Helmsley remarked back to Perrin, "I'd like to shake their hands....if they have hands."

"Let's not jump to conclusions," Picard jumped in, to reign in any false hopes. He still felt uneasy, especially with Counselor Troi's earlier psychic event. "Mr. Data, scan the vicinity for other vessels."

"No other vessels present in the area, captain," Data replied, his fingers running across his console in his usual efficient manner.

"Hold on," Perrin said, attracting her two senior officer's attention. Riker stood up and walked over to the science console to get a better look at her readouts. "I'm picking up some sort of biological readings...coming from...the outer hull of one of the Borg ships."

Picard was looking to Perrin, who had changed the viewscreen to show what she was seeing. Riker looked to Data, as he and the rest of the crew took in what was on the screen.

screen5.jpg

"Magnify," Picard ordered, as Data increased the view. The small, organic-looking bio-mass increased in size, looking like an ashen-colored squid, though without tentacles.

screen4.jpg

"Definitely organic captain," Perrin confirmed. "But our sensors can't seem to penetrate its surface."

Captain Picard regarded the statement for a moment, and turned to Shapiro, "Send friendship message on all frequencies."

The tall officer worked his controls for a moment before replying, "No response, captain."

"This could be a space-dwelling organism," Riker remarked, standing up to join the captain.

"Like Farpoint," Picard continued the thought between the both of them.

As Riker stood next to him, he continued, looking for other possibilities, "Or it could be a biological weapon, like the planet killer a century ago..."

"I'd like to know what kind of a weapon could destroy the Borg..." Picard said, turning his head to Riker in response. He turned to his new science officer and asked, "Can we beam that away from the ship?"

Perrin took a moment to make the attempt, "I can't get a lock on it..."

"Tractor beams?" Riker asked, turning to Data.

Data's fingers flew over the controls, trying combinations and retuning the beam faster than any human, "No effect, commander. Whatever this may be, it does seem impervious to our technology."

"Lieutenant Perrin, are you still reading an atmosphere in the Borg Cube?" Picard asked, taking cautious stock of the situation.

"Aye sir," she replied, scanning the remnants of the Borg cube before them.

"Will, I want you to take an Away Team inside, try to get a short-range scan of that biomass, ascertain what it is, and if it's responsible for this," Picard said, turning to his trusted first officer.

"Captain, there are still Borg lifesigns," Perrin reported, "but they are unstable."

"Keep an open commlink," Picard ordered, "and we'll keep an active transporter lock on you. At the first sign of trouble, we'll pull you out."

Riker nodded, and gave Shapiro, Data, and another security officer the nod to join him. The two senior bridge officers secured their stations as they acknowledged Riker's signal to join him. Bridge officers quickly assumed their stations as Riker's away team left the bridge.

Captain Picard again glanced at the bio-mass on screen.

screen3.jpg

The temporary ops officer, a purple ensign with a long tail that she used as if it were a third hand, glanced up to the captain as she worked her console, "Captain?"

TranceGemini2.jpg

"Yes, ensign?" he answered as he stood by her console, glancing at the Brog debris.

"I don't have a good feeling about this," she replied.

"The away mission? Or that someone could've done this to the Borg?" the captain asked.

"Both sir," she replied as she tapped her controls to maintain the transporter lock on the crew that she was just informed were on the Borg vessel now.

Part 2

Inside the Borg vessel, the maze of corridors and alcoves stretched around the remnant of the vessel. The cube has taken heavy damage; walls were scorched, internal lighting flickered, and a haze filled the air. Two dead Borg in one section of the ship lie on the floor, one slumped in its alcove.

Roker, Data, Shapiro, and ensign Thompson materialized in the ship, carrying phaser rifles. They immediately shone their phaser beacons in the darkness. Luckily, there were no active Borg in sight. Riker's nerves were on edge, however, given that only a few months ago, the Borg had nearly assimilated the Enterprise.

Data pulled out his tricorder, taking a scan of the general area to map out their route to the biomass.

After a moment, he spoke, "This way, commander," pointing down a corridor.

[graphic: Data, Riker, two others in Borg vessel]

The three officers followed Data down the corridor, stopping when they saw three Borg drones methodically making repairs, completely ignoring them. One of the drones was missing an arm, and the other two looked injured. Despite their injuries, they continue their task of repair.

"Seems like they're a little pre-occupied..." Shapiro joked in a half-whisper.

"Lower your phaser rifles," Riker whispered. "They'll ignore us if we don't appear to be a threat."

Data led the team down a corridor, with Riker following closely as Data gave them directions. They carefully passed the three Borg, who continue to ignore their presence of their ship.

The team reaches an intersection, and Riker stops for a moment, and nods in the direction of one of the corrodors. Data scans in that direction.

"We are getting close, Commander," Data replied, taking his readings. "The alien bio-readings are definitely getting stronger in this direction."

Not a second later, Shapiro called out, "Commander!"

The others in the team looked down the hallway to see a bizarre scuplture of death: mangled and twisted Borg bodies, just as Troi described in her psychic vision, but this was real, and right in front of them.

borgbodies.jpg

Riker, Data, Shapiro, and Thompson took in the grotesque sight; they transmitted their telemetry back to the Enterprise as they were able.

On the bridge of the Enterprise, Perrin took a look at the sight, repulsed by the grotesque horror of it.

On the vessel, Data scanned the bodies. "Curious," he said.

"That's not the word I had in mind," Riker quipped back as he looked to the second officer.

"These bodies are reminiscent of the vision that Counselor Troi described as having after we arrived in the Delta Quadrant," Data explained, turning to his first officer.

"Didn't the counselor also say that we were going to die?" Shapiro asked, having also been briefed on her vision. He wasn't one to believe in psychic premonitions, but he had to admit, he was having second thoughts right now.

"Let's keep moving," Riker said, wanting to get past the horror before them.

The away team continued down the corridor, seeing a long Borg working on a section of the wall.

What's the deal with casting busty women in alien roles??? ;)

I was thinking that, too. Even the Trill's breasts are insanely photoshoppy huge. (BTW, I like the original name for her better.)

I really like how you have photos along the way. Adds a bit of something to it. So far, so good! :)

I guess it's partly as a counter to all the anorexic ladies I see on TV and in the news nowadays. Besides, I figure nutrition will be advanced enough in the 24th century that the right dietary supplements... :) And the purple species is naturally that way. I'll expand on that species after finishing the intro to this new alternate reality.

"Let's keep moving," Riker said, wanting to get past the horror before them.

The away team continued down the corridor, seeing a long Borg working on a section of the wall. At the far end of the corridor, Riker saw a Borg working on a section of the wall; as they moved closer, it became clear what he was trying to do.

The Borg's assimilation tubules were out, attempting to pierce some alien flesh that appeared to have dissolved through the Borg hull. An electric crackle sent the Borg back, but it continued to try.

Riker, Data, Shapiro, and Ensign Thompson were shocked at the sight.

"It looks as if it dissolved right through the hull," Shapiro remarked to himself.

"Intriguing observation Lieutenant," Data added. "Commander, it appears as if the Borg are attempting to assimilate the alien entity."

"They're not having much luck," Riker commented, looking at the tricorder readings. Changing the subject, he reported to Data, "I'm getting a chamber on the other side of this tunnel; high concentrations of antimatter particles. Possibly a propulsion system."

"That's a ship?" Thompson reacted, surprised.

"The Enterprise has encountered several living entities in space, such as Gomtuu, or the Crystalline Entity for example," Data answered.

Glancing at his readings, Riker remarked, "There doesn't appear to be anybody aboard."

"Commander, we should get some readings from inside the vessel," Data began. "Request permission to enter."

"Data, you're more valuable out here. I want you to interface with the Borg ship, download their tactical database. Maybe we can find out what happened here," Riker countered. "Shapiro, go with him. Thompson, you're with me."

Riker tapped his combadge, opening the channel back to the Enterprise, as Data and Shapiro began walking over to what looked like a data node. "Riker to Enterprise."

"Go ahead, Commander," came Picard's voice.

"Captain, we've got an entrance into the bio-mass. Thompson and I are going in to investigate," Riker reported.

"Understood," Picard replied. "Be careful, Will."

"Riker out," he tapped his badge again, taking Thompson with him into the alien entity.

Continued.......

"Data," Riker said, looking at his trusted friend, "there's a Borg data node. Take Shapiro with you and see what information you can download from it."

"Perhaps I can download their tactical database and ascertain what occurred to the vessel," Data replied, continuing the thought. Data nodded to Shapiro as the two moved towards the node, while Riker and Thompson moved out.

Inside the vessel, Riker and Thompson took in the alien surroundings. The walls were rounded, organic looking, with pulsing veins of energy running along the walls. Fleshy membranes hung from the ceiling. In the center of the room was a chair that appeared to have been grown out of the floor of the vessel. The only source of light appeared to be from glowing sections of the walls. Riker noted the overall rumbling sound, as if he were inside a living organism, much like Tin Man, and yet, colder, more alien.

Thompson noted the chair was fitted for a large humanoid, for something possibly over ten feet tall or so. The silence around them felt "creepy" to Thompson.

Riker looked over at the wall, noticing several pulsing 'veins' running through it. He moves to the wall and scans it with his tricorder.

Scorpion___alien_wall_2_by_JJohnson1701.jpg

"They appear to be organic conduits...they're carrying an electrodynamic fluid," Riker remarked.

"Possibly an energy source of some kind," Thompson theorized.

"Could be. Our crew could spend weeks analyzing this," Riker smirked.

The two officers walked along the wall to a section of wall that appeared to be blinking colorfully; scanning with their tricorders, Riker found what appeared to be 'neurochemical pulses' going through the opening in the wall.
Scorpion___pulsing_wall_by_JJohnson1701.jpg

"It looks like this is some form of neural matrix...there's neurochemical activity in here, and it's laced with neuropeptides," Riker noted, looking at his tricorder's readings.

Thompson nodded, and checking his upper sensor band, "it's possible it's their analog to a computer core or a sub processor."

On the Borg vessel, Data worked as quickly as possible to retrieve the information from the node. There was a quiet moment, then a scraping sound that piqued Data's curiosity. He had turned off his emotion chip, otherwise he would have likely felt fear at the moment, which would have been complete counterproductive to his mission. Shapiro glanced around, as another scrape echoed through the ship. He glanced at the Borg amalgamation, his hands beginning to sweat. Through the noise, Data continued to work.

Riker and Thompson were at opposite ends of the alien chamber, studying its various features. Thompson was eyeing a large section of the wall that appeared scorched and torn.

"Commander, this damage here appears to have been caused by a Borg disruptor beam," he relayed, reading his tricorder's scans. "The wall appears to be....regenerating itself." He said that last bit with a bit of surprise. Space-based life was not something he was too familiar with, and regenerating ships were completely new to him.

Thompson caught something out of the corner of his eye in the adjoining chamber. Moving to see what it is, he looks down to see...

Scorpion___dead_borg_by_JJohnson1701.jpg

The dead Borg appeared to have pulsing, growing alien tendrils all about it, feeding on it....consuming it. It was being absorbed into the ship.

"Thompson..." Riker called out to his colleague to get his attention...

On the Borg vessel, Data continued to work, he was almost finished. The Borg atrocity stood off to one side as Shapiro stood guard, his phaser rifle at the ready. Another scraping sound....followed by a distant booming sound. A weapon firing? Or something else?

The download completed, as Data stepped away from the console. He recalibrated it for lifesigns and began scanning the corridor as another scraping sound echoed.

The Borg next to Data and Shapiro that had been attempting to assimilate the alien vessel stops its futile effort, and then looks past the two Starfleet officers towards the direction of the sound and then walks in the opposite direction, as if it were retreating from it. 'Curious...' thought Data. Completely uncharacteristic for the Borg to act in this manner.

A loud CRASH! came from nearby as if metal were being twisted apart. Data turns back in the direction of Shapiro, reacting to where the noise came from.

SICKBAY

Deanna was talking to Beverly about the crew's health and getting caught up with the next round of psych evaluations, as she had a few moments to spare during the away mission.

Suddenly, Deanna gets a psychic flash, a visual of Shapiro, the security guard that went with Will and Data, screaming in agony. The backlash was enough that even Deanna felt it, faltering in her steps towards Beverly in her office. Crusher rushed to catch her.

"Deanna!" Crusher called out in concern for her friend's pain. She pulled out her tricorder, and began scanning her with one hand, while helping her up with her other arm.

The look of panic on Troi's face rose, "Data and Riker are in danger...."

"Counselor, what are you...." Beverly began. It wasn't like Deanna to have psychic flashes of this magnitude before.

"Get them out of there!" she nearly cried as she felt another wince of pain.

Doctor Crusher tapped her combadge, "Crusher to bridge."

Back on the alien vessel, Riker and Thompson have come back together as the compare notes, and are about to take a sample back to the ship, when they hear Data's voice calling to them from the Borg vessel.

"Commander!" called Data, a sense of urgency in his voice.

The two reacted, running out of the alien vessel, back towards where they entered. Data is standing in the corridor, his tricorder open, Shapiro at point ahead of him.

"Commander, there is something else in here with us...and it is not a Borg," Data tapped a few commands into his tricorder. "I cannot localize it. It appears to be within twenty meters of us."

"Perhaps the 'pilot' of that ship has returned," Riker remarked. He put his tricorder up and drew his phaser.

Riker's badge chirped as the away team heard their captain's voice over the comm. "Picard to away team."

The First Officer tapped his badge quickly in response, "Go ahead, Enterprise."

ENTERPRISE BRIDGE

Picard sat at his seat, Troi to his left, Perrin at the science station, and EnsignTiilan at ops. Troi had a worried look on her face.

"Commander, stand by for transport. We're getting you out of there," Picard said over the comm.

"Good idea, Captain," Riker replied.

"Energize," Picard ordered, glancing to Tiilan.

Tiilan worked the ops console, where Data normally sat. The console beeped back at her, refusing to cooperate.

"Captain, I can't get a lock on them..." Tiilan reported over her shoulder to the captain.

"What's the problem ensign?" Picard asked as he rose from the captain's chair.

"It appears to be some kind of bio-electric interference..." Tiilan replied. "It's coming from whatever's approaching them..."

BORG VESSEL

On the Borg ship, the four Starfleet officers awaited transport, as another scraping sound echoed through the chamber, the tension rising. An alien SHRIEK let out, making Shapiro grip his rifle tighter. His knuckles were white with tension.

"It's within eight meters..." Data reported.

"Everyone, let's get out of here, put some distance between us," Riker ordered as the away team moved down the hall. Shapiro led the team, followed by Data, Riker, and Thompson at the rear.

ENTERPRISE BRIDGE

"Perrin, we need a lock on our crew," Picard said, a sense of urgency in his voice as he walked over to the Trill manning the science station.

"Conventional signal locks and bio-locks aren't working..." she said, her voice trailling off. She tapped a few commands and reported, "I'm attempting to narrow the confinement beam."

The console beeped back at her as that method failed. Perrin could swear the console was mocking her, toying with her. "Come on Enterprise, give me something I can work with...." she said in a motherly voice, as she stroked her hand along the outer edge of the console.

She glanced up seeing the captain look at her, and replied, "sometimes it helps to ask nicely..."

Picard smiled a little, "All haste, Lieutenant."

"Aye sir," she said as she tried locking on the very intermittent signal she was getting from the crew. Luckily, they had stopped, but the interference continued. She was scanning through, and suddenly, it hit her. If she couldn't lock onto life signs, lock onto what was different from everything around them - the minerals and elements in their bones! Grab that and what's around it, and you grab the crew!

She snapped her fingers, and started working the console. As she did, she bit part of her lower lip as she worked, a habit she picked up from her second host, Elis Perrin. Picard was watching over her shoulder as she reported back to him. "Captain, I figured out a way to grab the crew and get them out. I'm going to try a skeletal lock."

"A skeletal lock?" Picard asked, not having heard of it before.

"It's a trick I adapted from Korvin Perrin. To beam out when normal signal locks fail, lock on what you can, and expand your confinement beam around it. Grab the minerals of a lifeform, and everything around it with your transporter, and you grab the lifeform when you beam them out," she said. "I'm energizing now."

BORG VESSEL

Shapiro got a little ahead of the rest of the team, hoping to secure the area ahead so they could transport out. Another clearing in the ship, as Shapiro glanced around to get the lay of the opening, he checked the three pathways out, then glanced down at a dead Borg in the corner, and towering over it, a large, ten-foot tall, three legged alien.

Alien_on_Borg_vessel_by_JJohnson1701.jpg

Its limbs were obviously cramped in the Borg corridor. Without warning, it lunged at Shapiro with blinding speed, slashing him, sending the tall security officer flying like a rag doll back towards the others.

Data, attempting to protect the mere human blocked a blow by the alien, which had tossed Shapiro, but was lifted by the alien's other arm and tossed against a bulkhead. As Shapiro hit the floor, he began screaming as he dematerialized. Data, Thompson, and Riker dematerialized as well as the alien took a swing at them too.

BRIDGE

Perrin turned around from her station as she reported back to Picard, "Got 'em captain."

"That's a trick we'll have to add for the academy lessons," Picard said as he turned to return to his captain's chair.

He was interrupted by the purple Tiilan at ops. "Captain!"

To be continued....

'Bout time this story got going again.

To quote a response to my fanfic thread:

"DONT wait several months to continue!!!"

Interesting story. The plot is exactly the same as in Scorpion, but with adjustments to the TNG crew. I like it.

Troi looked at the screen, a small but growing feeling in her...anger...rage...a slight feeling of pain in her mind...

Troi_on_Bridge_by_JJohnson1701.jpg

And a psychic flash in her mind, letting her see the alien in her mind's eye:

8472_by_JJohnson1701.jpg

The force of the alien's psychic blast knocked Troi out of her chair, holding her head in a vain attempt to block the pain.

"Counselor!" Picard called out looking over to her.

Picard helped Deanna back to her chair, and called over his shoulder, "Get us out of here, maximum warp! Engage!"

As he looked, the alien vessel charged its weapon and fired on the Enterprise, sending it spinning wildly, as Helmsley attempted to enter the coordinates to send the Enterprise off at warp.

Luckily, he worked quickly, and the Enterprise righted itself, and entered warp.

Enterprise_at_Warp_by_JJohnson1701.jpg

The crew recovered slowly, assessing their system statuses. Data came back to the bridge with Riker, who took a moment to put his hand on Deanna's shoulder.

"Deanna, are you alright?" Riker said, with concern on his voice.

"I'll be fine, Will, thanks," she replied. "I got a psychic projection from the vessel, the pilot there."

"Counselor, let's have Beverly check you out just to be safe," Picard said, a slight smile showing his concern for his crewmate and friend.

Data re-assumed his station from Tiilan, and checked his sensor scans as he did.

"Captain, the alien vessel is not pursuing us," Data reported.

Picard straightened his uniform and stood up out of his chair. "Mr. Data, bring up the last visual of the alien vessel."

A quick tap of the console, and the image came up on the screen.

14m97gy.jpg

"Speculations?" Picard asked, looking for input his crew.

Troi spoke up, "When I was in contact with them, they were communicating with me. They're a telepathic species. Captain, it's not the Borg we need to worry about. It's them. The anger I felt..."

"Did they say anything to you, or did you just get images from them?" Riker asked.

"The pilot said, 'the weak shall perish,'" Troi said, with a slight sense of fear on her voice.

Captain's log, stardate 50983.6. It's been ten hours since our confrontation with the alien lifeform, and there's been no sign of pursuit by them or the Borg. The crew is effecting repairs on the vessel, and we are now operating at full power. Mr. La Forge assures me that we now have enough power to make our eventual journey home. But our more immediate concern, being in Borg space...and having a hostile alien presence here as well, means we need to find a way out of this region as quickly as possible.

...

Sickbay

Doctor Crusher informed Riker of Shapiro's status, "the infection is spreading. These alien cells, they're multiplying rapidly, feeding on him, consuming him."

"Why is he still conscious?" Will asked.

"I tried a sedative, but the alien cells rejected it," Crusher explained, exasperated. "Every form of treatment I tried was rejected in seconds. Their DNA is more than a hundred times denser than anything I've ever seen. It would take years to decipher their genetic code."

"That must be why the Borg couldn't assimilate them," Riker remarked. "Resistance wasn't futile in this case."

"But, there is a possibility," Crusher said, with a slight smile, thinking of it. "We have modified some Borg nanites with Data's help, recoded their assimilation mechanism, giving them the same electro-chemical signature as the alien cells, tricking them into not fighting back."

Crusher showed Riker a graphic of what she was proposing on the monitor:
scorpion1189.jpg

"How long?" Riker asked, glancing over at Shapiro.

"It'll take a few days to replicate them in sufficient numbers," Crusher sighed.

"Does he have a few days?" Riker asked.

"I wish I knew," Crusher replied, concern evident in her voice.

"Do what you have to, Doctor. Divert resources from any non-essential system if necessary," Riker said as he glanced one more time at Shapiro before leaving sickbay. "Don't give up...that's an order," he said as he left the sickbay.

Engineering

Picard, Data, and La Forge were down in Engineering near the 'pool table' looking at the piece of Borg technology on the console, while Geordi and Data explained the situation to Picard.

"Based on an analysis of the Borg tactical database, we discovered that they refer to this alien race as Species 8472," Data began. "For the last five months, they have engaged the species over a dozen times, each time relatively quickly and decisively."

"Do the Borg have any information about where they come from?" Picard asked.

"I'm afraid so," Geordi answered. He tapped a few controls, bringing up a map of the local space, showing the region where 8472 was coming from.

...to be continued.
