Star Trek The Motion Picture Deleted Memory Wall scene Restored

The deleted Memory Wall scene remains probably one of the biggest deleted scenes in the entire Star Trek franchise. So, for the 45th anniversary of Star Trek The Motion Picture, We present a restoration of the deleted Memory Wall scene from Star Trek The Motion Picture using set photos, surviving footage, other reconstructions, animation and the original script.

This video has been posted here before. It's not a restoration because there is no film publicly available to restore.

At best, this is an attempt to emulate what might've been through a slideshow.

A selection of still photographs accompanied by descriptive text from the screenplay is not a restoration of the scene...

Hi, I personally disagree, the definition of restored is to bring back or re-establish (a previous right, practice, or situation, or, to return (someone or something) to a former condition, place, or position. 👍

Hi, It is a restoration of what's available, restoring something doesn't mean you need every piece of material possible. the definition of restored is to bring back or re-establish (a previous right, practice, or situation, or, to return (someone or something) to a former condition, place, or position. This definition implies that we don't need all the source material to restore something. 👍

I am currently playing around using LitVideo to see if I can translate some of this onto film. It doesn't work with Kirk and Spock because you can't separate Spock's solo journey, so I have been pasting Grace Lee Whitney's face into Nimoy's original spacesuit so that Kirk and Rand pursue Spock.

I think there are limits on what AI understands so I suspect that the attack by the light bees may prove too difficult to produce but I have subscribed for a year, so I will see how I get on!

Hi, Pauln6, that sounds cool, can't wait for your next upload and the new memory wall video. 🖖

I need to obtain permission from LitVideo before I can share it publicly, especially as it has AI produced likenesses of two actors in some parts. I might be limited to a few images, or sharing with individuals for personal use.

I might get more mileage if I wave it under Otoy's nose. I am trying to convince them that they could do an amazing job on a Memory Wall scene. It might be useful for storyboarding.

I would agree, except that footage is not publicly available, also the footage may be lost now. The definition of restoration implies that we do not need all of the source material in an attempt a restoration of something.

This video doesn't do any of that because it doesn't have any of the original footage that was shot by Robert Wise in autumn 1978.

I think the Memory Wall has a bit of a mythical status because a fair chunk of it was shot and never seen, but I don't see an easy way to incorporate it into the movie narrative given the way they eventually decided to go. Rendering a CGI Memory Wall is possibly the easy part but how do you make it awe-inspiring rather than just another special effects slog? I think it would take some serious artistic licence to achieve that along with a soundtrack worthy of the original movie.

I decided that if you are going to preserve the scene as part of the story rather than a passion project, then someone other than Spock has to accompany Kirk inside V'Ger. I picked Rand many reasons:

- The spacewalk scene drags if Kirk has nobody to talk to after leaving McCoy and floating through the Memory Wall could end up being just a pretty visual experience with almost no dialogue;
- I'm fond of Rand and I felt that her return to the franchise was underwhelming as little more than a cameo, absent from two thirds of the movie even though they shove her up front with the senior crew at the briefing, and even though there were clearly opportunities to use her later (e.g. instead of DiFalco on the bridge or Ross in engineering);
- Most of the other characters are established elsewhere;
- Spock's original orange spacesuit can just about pass for engineering red;
- It would make sense for Kirk to try and set up a transporter relay to bypass V'Ger's shielding;
- Kirk and Rand had a close working relationship in TOS and giving them some alone time could be an opportunity for Kirk to open up a bit, and for her finally fulfilling her originally intended role as Miss Kitty to his Marshall Dillon in a way that, in TMP, he can't with McCoy until the end;
- It might be an opportunity to demonstrate a sliver of camaraderie that many say is absent from the movie;
- It might be an opportunity for someone other than McCoy and Chekov to be some comic relief;
- And this was the clincher - I really struggled with vocoded dialogue (although I am sure the technology has improved since) - and Grace appeared in a LOT of shows, some of which can be tracked down on the internet, giving me an opportunity to re-purpose dialogue from other sources.
- I took inspiration from the early scene in Alien where Dallas, Lambert, and Kane head out to explore the crashed ship, but instead using Kirk, Spock, and Rand. Admittedly, half her dialogue makes her sound like she is off her trolley but I tried to portray her as terrified, using humour to mask her fear. If I had the skill to add a "Quit griping," "I like griping," exchange, I would have.
