Star Trek: The Doomsday Machine - Teaser Online June 12

You know, I used to have several more of those digital stream clips around somewhere. I think one of them even had their rendition of the Constellation. I'll have to look around and see sometime.

I'll know better what I think of the PK when we get a better look at it - at this "distance" the resolution is such that I think the "CG-ness" of some basic elements, like the energy effect, is overemphasized.

All in all, this is my favorite "remastering" of this episode of the several that have been done in one form or another - including CBS's.

You know this episode was the first one that anyone tried to do with Lightwave that I know of - an outfit called "Digital Stream" did a pretty primitive version back in 1996.

I'm having problems downloading Act 1. It keeps timing out on me. I think it's because of the file size and my Internet speed can't handle it. Could you offer just Act 1 for download and not both the Teaser and Act 1 together?
No, but I'm working on some other options... hang in there...

I just finished watching it, and when the Machine popped up on Enterprise's viewscreen, I nearly dove under the desk! Nice work, Prof.

Just finished watching. Prof, really like your take on the Constellation. Very nice attention and creation of detail. Still on the fence with your version of the planet killer, have to see more of it to cement a opinion/comment. All in all, excellent work!

Yet again, lovely work. Count me in the camp that likes your take on the Doomsday Machine. It's a nice interpretation, and looks suitably creepy/threatening to me.

I think that's a perfectly valid observation, Q2UnME. The planet killer is definitely a departure from what was seen onscreen forty years ago, although it does share the original's lateral profile and overall size (more or less). Hopefully I'll be able to meet expectations in Act II!

p.s. I reserve the right to retcon the fire effects, Dennis--I'm still not 100% satisfied with them, either, so you may see a revision come Act II that I'll have to backport to the sequence at the end of Act I. (After all, I already retconned the textures and architectural details of Constellation between the teaser and Act I!)

Oh don't worry... won't be stopping. But at this rate I might not get done until 2017. :D

Act II, Scene 1 is now online.

Jeez, Prof, you a such a tease... ;)

Just got my attention and *poof* it's over... More please ....

Looks great ! (in a Star Wars kind of way)

Q2UnME

Sorry Q2UnME... with my glacier-like progress I decided to release this one on its own as an early Christmas gift (or a late Thanksgiving turkey, depending on your opinion therein :))

I'm sorry, but 'what did you do?!'

The Planet Killer looks good, but the Enterprise looks like a toy zipping around like that.
:(

*shrugs*... it was a deliberate artistic choice to show how the Enterprise is having to dodge and swoop through the asteroid remains of System L-374 to escape the planet killer--a visual underline to Spock's assertion that the Enterprise is more maneuverable but is still being overtaken by the PK.

Don't worry, I'm not going to have the Enterprise flying like an F-18 for the remainder of the episode... this will pretty much be the only sequence where you'll see her flying like this.

Mhmm... perhaps you could have gotten the same point across by having the Enterprise perform these manoeuvres but keeping the camera close to the ship...

Good ;) :D

The motion blur looks great btw. :techman:

Believe me, I tried several variations of the camera hewing closely to the Enterprise, which is one reason why this one scene took almost two months to finish (I've lost count of the number of versions I went through but it must have been at least half a dozen, with several minor iterations on each major version). In the end, what you see here is what I was happiest with. I could endlessly tweak this further but I've GOT to move on... this was way too much time spent on one scene (but it was an iconic enough scene that I don't regret the time spent).

Glad you like the motion blur :). The motion blur used in this scene (and the others as well) is actually several different techniques depending on the scene element. The volumetric dust/haze is actually filmed with the "classic" LightWave camera and classic motion blur (the perspective camera and photoreal motion blur is literally an order of magnitude slower for certain particle effects like this, I've found). The background asteroid fields are filmed with the perspective camera but still use classic motion blur as well. Only the planet killer, Enterprise and the "hero" asteroids seen up close are filmed with the perspective camera and photoreal motion blur.

I have posted in this thread before, but I just have to say again how much I like what you are doing. I really enjoyed Daren Dochterman's take on this, and I feel that yours is fantastic as well. Strong work all around!

Thanks Trekwatcher! (Still trying to figure out Soar Dude's non sequitur.)

I was hoping to have the second scene in Act II (the one where the planet killer fires on the Enterprise for the first time) finished in time to post it as a "Christmas present" but it doesn't look like the scene elements are going to be finished rendering in time before I hop on my plane. :( There's still a chance though, so we'll see.
