STAR TREK - The Absolute Best and Worst

I supposed that even then the main criticism would have been that the focus was on a character of an entirely different series.
There would have been complaints, to be sure. Gimmicky, cheap fanservice, crap like that. But most of the viewers would have been fine with it, and many would have loved to see some continuity between the Treks.

Movies are on the table, and may be mentioned either in addition to your favorite shows, or in lieu of them.

Hard for me to say what is the absolute best or worst when I haven't seen most of the CBS All-Access/Paramount+ offerings.

Best Movie: The Wrath of Khan because I can watch it over and over without getting sick of it. Shatner and Montalban's performances, Spock's sacrifice, the tension of the fight in the nebula... yeah.

Worst Movie: Nemesis. It feels like there are 2 very different movies smooshed together and they just don't fit.

Best Episode: The Corbomite Maneuver (TOS). Absolutely everything I love about Star Trek in one package.

Worst Episode: Threshold (VOY). This is the episode that made me give up on watching VOY.

Recently, past tense part one and two has become my favourite because of the state of this world currently, it's scary to know how accurate it became. I hope that one day we live without prejudice. Before that it was inner light.

Worst: ethics. Fuck you, fuck you for making an episode about an character recieving a injury that made him disabled and then killed him only to cure him! You put two of the most offensive tropes in one episode!

Partly out of habit and partly out of pure ornery-ness, I don't post serious bad language. But an episode that REALLY makes me want to... Blight-ingale. Let's consider what all it did.

1. It assassinated Captain Janeway. When Harry makes the simple observation that he's still an ensign after seven years... does he get a measure of empathy? Understanding, from a fellow officer who was an ensign herself once? No, he gets an accusation that he is "bucking for a promotion". Like he is wrong to think that an officer with his level of performance should ever be promoted.

2. It SERIOUSLY assassinated Harry Kim. He has worked under Janeway, Chakotay, and Tuvok for seven years. All three of them have impeccable command skills. So how did he learn nothing from them?

3. It was a deliberate and calculated shot at the viewers. Undoubtedly, after Harry failed to find a box on his chair (despite being way more deserving than Tom), people undoubtedly complained about this. Did the writers accommodate them? Did they even ignore them? No, they not only doubled down hard on Harry's forever ensignhood, they basically rubbed the viewers' noses in it, like "we're gonna do this and you can't stop us". While I think the three-decade "poor dumb Harry" trope has likely exceeded their expectations, I have little doubt it's exactly what they were trying to do.

So, Blight-ingale might not have Half a Life's appalling sympathy with a horrific episode in our past, and it might not be as completely devoid of any redeeming features as Profit and Lace, it's certainly one of VOY's worst efforts.

The idea that the writers intentionally ruined a character in order to deliberately piss off fans of their show is ridiculous.

I doubt very much they (or most fans) have given Harry Kim that much thought at all.

Why ruin the character at all? On TNG, they devoted half an episode to promoting an often-overlooked character (Deanna). Why couldn't VOY spare a minute and 15 seconds?

Possibly less, since they probably wouldn't do the hazing a second time.
