Star Trek sub-par?

Hi, I'm new here and with the risk of being controversial I am making a bold but IMO true statement.

Star Trek pales in comparison to other shows such as Battlestar Galactica & Babylon 5. These shows have better storylines, special effects and general production values than Star Trek could ever dream of. I'm open for discussion but I doubt you could sway my opinion.

Then why join a Star Trek message board? The two shows you mention above I found rather dull compared to Trek after trying both for multiple seasons.

Different strokes and all that...

Yeah, I like Star Trek but I just find the special effects and storylines a bit lame in comparison to other shows. Also, I don't understand why captain kirk couldn't have a better ship than the millennium falcon (a bit lame don't you think?)

Babylon 5 I found to be great, a refreshing take on the future after Trek's more opimistic version.

However I don't think that take would've been as refreshing or indeed been a good counterpoint without Trek around in the first place for it to compare itself to and its fans get excited about how different it is to Trek.

Face it, even hardened B5 fans, when stating their love for the series will say something like "it's so different to Trek" or "It takes things further than Trek" etc.

Trek paved the way for shows like B5 to exist which is why I'm comfortable with really enjoying both of them without getting into the whole VS debates that people seem to like so much.

At the end of the day, we're all Sci-fi fans so there's no point sub dividing ourselves and fighting amongst one another when there's crap like reality TV on that perhaps we should all unite and take on instead.

*edit* Oh I get it now. Yeah and Gandalf as Captain of the Enterprise, what were they thinking?

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess you never visited the set of B5. Visitors often reported that the sets looked as if they were built from styrofoam. Yes, B5 made excellent use of CG in a time when it was just wasn't being done to that extent... but to say that B5 had higher production values or better special effects than a similar show filmed at roughly the same time (like DS9) is simply your opinion and nothing else.

In the case of NuBSG, it reaped the rewards of coming after a lot of other great Sci-fi shows which built a fanbase for it; several of those shows were titled "Star Trek".

You could say that B5 had more consistent writing, which I would agree with. But, that sort of thing happens when the creator of the show does the majority of the writing, as opposed to the committee-like system that later Trek shows seemed to have.

Course, the sets and shooting models of B5, BSG, and even Star Wars would have been made from paper mache and likely would not have seen the light of day had it not been for Star Trek.

Credit where credit is due, sir.

I liked B5 but not as much as Trek. The central conflict of "order"(Vorlons) vs "chaos"(Shadows) was a bit cliche and the plots were often a bit slow. Still a good show with some terrific characters and ideas, and the serialized storytelling approach was effective.

I've tried byt haven't been able to get into NuBSG.

The thing about Star Trek is that it's wildly uneven, as any franchise with so much material would be.

I think that TOS, TNG, and DS9 are consistently very good, though TNG is probably the most uneven of the three.

The decline starts with VOY and really speeds up with ENT, but by that point the franchise was tired and in need of fresh ideas.

Still the ratio of good to bad Trek is very good for a franchise with such a long history
