I liked Quinto, alot. But Peck is better by a country mile. It's his voice, his posture, his little mannerisms. If Nimoy is a 10, Peck is a 9.5.

For me -- this is not a measure of quality, because I think Peck does a generally good job as Spock. And I think Nimoy's performance as Spock was generally superior to Shatner's performance as Kirk. But. I also think that Shatner's acting choices relied on his particular, unique charisma in a way that Nimoy's acting choices did not; Nimoy's acting choices were a bit less reliant on his particular qualities as a performer than Shatner's were -- he was a bit more systematic in his choices and therefore his choices lends themselves more easily to being replicated and reinterpreted by other actors. Whereas, there's just this ineffible Shatnerocity to his Kirk that belies attempts to replicate and reinterpret his acting choices.

That's why to me, the best way to approach a new version of Kirk is just to let go of my preconceptions about what Kirk ought to be like. I find that my preconceptions about what Kirk "ought" to be like are just too intimately tied to Shatner as a performer; the only way I can really accept anyone else as Kirk is to let go of Shatner entirely.

That's just me though -- your mileage may vary.

    Shiny. :)

Ah! Cool. I can't wait to see that in my rewatch of TOS.

    Holy moley!

No, you just can't say it on a family-friendly forum.

There’s two in SNW, off the top of my head. A Quality of Mercy in the first season and Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow. I’d have to look at the list of names to see if there’s more.

Nope, Sulu was too busy pivoting at Warp 2 bringing the tubes to bear. And he had lines...

Chekov also fires on the Orion ship from both the nav station and Spock's station in 'Journey to Babel.' Phasers and photon torpedoes this time.

I completely agree, and I say that as someone who really wants to snuggle Zachary Quinto.

Stop saying "lazy writing." It sickens me.

Definitely the voice for me too!

But I also tend to prefer the TV versions of characters over the movie versions. The character scenes in movies are mainly there to serve the needs of the plot, whereas on TV there’s time for character scenes to be just about the characters. Over time, this makes the TV characters feel more well-rounded and real to me.

This is true for me even when the same actors in both—I like the TOS and TNG characters more on TV than in the movies.

It's Quinto for me. Peck's face doesn't match his voice as Spock.

This might sound bizarre but I think restricting it to the both of them I would say that Quinto is a better young Spock: his appearance, voice, and mannerisms seem to project youth to me, and Peck is a better slightly older Spock for the same reasons. This is kind of splitting hairs as I have enjoyed both performances.

Not to mention if one is looking for examples of “lazy writing”, there is certainly a more than sufficient quantity mascarading as clever dialogue in various corners of the bbs already.

The writing on this show is anything but lazy.

Most people who say 'lazy writing' don't have a fucking clue what writing even is. They just mean 'something happened that I didn't like', normally because some minor plot point isn't spelt out in huge black and white letters.

This episode was fine. The regulars are always great and it's nice to see Peck relaxing into Spock more. It's feeling more "right."

Still don't buy Wesley as Kirk. I just cannot shake the Jim Carrey vibe from him.

So this is how they want Kirk, Pike and Uhura to meet, eh? I like that it's not momentous, requiring a whole movie. Just meeting each other in the course of business.

And I agree, this didn't have to be a Kirk story. Pike doesn't even need to be Fleet Captain other than continuity demanding it so Chris and Jim can finally meet in their timeline. I'm not a fan who needs the blanks filled in. I would prefer this series be a strictly "Pike era" series with his crew from "The Cage" instead of all these TOS legacy characters. But since this is what we got, it's often good, sometimes great, but mostly just enjoyable. This episode was pure "Star Trek" but in a way that feels overly familiar. Gooding was amazing.

I was a little disappointed we didn't have a shot of Jim popping the cookie into his mouth in the lab.

"Your weight was up a coupla pounds..."

So a jazz band on the ship.. Boy that extra 200 people Kirk is gonna get must really piss off the OG crew since they don't carry a band by the time Abe Lincoln shows up.

Next week is the crossover? I have zero interest in Lower Decks, so that will either be an utter chore or a pleasant surprise.

Just keep TOS separate. Everything is easier to swallow. The Star Trek Multiverse.

Can I ask what more is it supposed to be?

    I tend to agree.
I do agree that the writing is anything but lazy but I don't think any of the posters are searching for such a black and white solution. I think it's not being certain why the episode doesn't work and trying to identify how it works. It's kind of like a friend of mine in VFX work who recalls getting feedback that the mouth of a CGI character wasn't right but the only feedback the producers could think of was "make the mouth brighter."

Sometimes what doesn't work isn't easy to spell out.

Unfortunately some who try to can't even spell in the first place.

I’m a bit embarrassed to admit that it’s Stefan Salvatore that I have a hard time not seeing when I look at Kirk. :alienblush:

I like Kirk on the show, but I would have preferred them to introduce him in a later season. Since there are only 10 episodes each season, I’d rather spend more time with the main cast right now.

Kirk was sharing cookies with Uhura in the last scene. Sam grabbed one to munch as he left the table. I wonder if Sam dropped any crumbs for Spock to wipe up.

Quinto seems a lot angrier than Nimoy's Spock.
I completely agree. Peck is also a lot funnier as Spock, which is something Nimoy was great at, too.
