So I came up with (and use) the alternative 'trekster' to denote someone who enjoys star trek but also happens to be a normal, or even cool, person (like me )

The choice of username was less a description of myself as it was something I thought was funny from the show. I went back and forth between VulcanLoveSlave and UnaDiaEnLaVidaDeUnaWarpCore.

Actually, if Trekkies is to be believed, she did routinely wear that uniform to her job down at the copy shop.

Except that 21st century Star Trek costumes don't really stand up to everyday wear, nor frequent (as in daily) laundering. Any more than one day and the underarms start to reek. (Actually, that does explain some dealers' halls I've been in on Day 2 of a ST convention.)

Does that mean they can't be dry cleaned?

Speaking for myself I have never paid much attention to anti-Trek sentiment. The one time I worried about it at all was when I was just graduated from High School and had decided that as a graduation gift to myself I was going to go to a convention. There was one in Seattle and the best priced lodging was in Tacoma (This was in the early '90's prior to the ready availability of internet access so I did all the booking by phone). The first day of the convention I had purchased a yellow TNG uniform shirt and had worn it out the next day. I did not drive so I was using public transportation/cabs/Greyhound and I was a bit worried that people would think I was terribly strange. Most people didn't seem to notice and a few even commented positively.

As for the general way Trek fandom in specific and pop culture fandom in general is regarded, well again I don't pay that much attention. I truly don't care. If you don't understand why the things I love are real, and precious to me then you don't. I will expect you to after indicating your lack of interest keep a respectful silence on the subject if you have nothing constructive to say. If you can't do that then expect to get far far better than you give, until you see reason and STFU.

Bottom line Geek what you Geek and let others do the same.
