Now that Disney is milking the "Star Wars" franchise for all its worth, with its new set of trilogies and spin-off movies, anyone else think that Paramount can do the same with the "Star Trek" universe? Create spin-off movies based on the "Star Trek" universe, like what "Rogue One" did with "Star Wars."

Each new "Star Trek" movie can be set aboard a different Starship, with a whole new captain and crew. Doesn't have to be set on a Starship, it could be set on a Starbase or a space-station, a la DS9. Even a movie can revolve around a brand new Captain or a different time-line, e.g. the 23rd century or beyond the 24th century even. There's a whole universe of ideas to play around with in the "Star Trek" universe.

Yes, there have been a ton of "Star Trek" spin-off television shows, but not the movies. And with the current state of the Kelvin universe going, the Kelvin universe won't last much longer. With the new "Star Trek Discovery" keep getting delayed, who wonders when the next iteration of Trek will air on television.

I think the brass at Lucasfilm were jealous that there were more "Star Trek" films than "Star Wars", so they had have to this crazy idea to spew out as many "Star Wars" films from now on. When will audience interest erode over the "Star Wars" franchise like what they did with the "Star Trek" universe. Us Trekkies certainly don't want "Star Wars" to overrun the "Star Trek" franchise do we?

Thoughts and opinion.

Unlikely given Beyond's lacklustre box office performance, and Paramount's continued mishandling of the franchise. The mid 90's was the best we are probably ever going to get I'm afraid. Unless Discovery knocks it out of the park, and somehow the fourth film gets made and does the same, I think we're in for another break.

The idea of making more movies wasn't Lucasfilm's- it was Disney's.

Disney paid 4.5 billion dollars to Lucas for the SW franchise. They expected it to be a cash cow, and the anthology movies are just another proverbial teat they can milk for all its worth. Judging the by success of Rogue 1, they are spot-on in their evaluation. I don't think anyone at Lucasfilm was jealous of anything- I think they were probably stoked to get the green light to revitalize the SW franchise after the prequel debacle nearly killed it.

... after the prequel debacle nearly killed it.

Whatever we may think of the prequel movies, they were huge box office hits. In show business, which is most certainly a business first and foremost, I don't see how that could be considered a "debacle."

The prequels cost about $350 million to make, and grossed nearly $2.5 billion.

Even I can do the math on that.

If we were to get spinoffs, I would not want yet another starship show. Mix up genres. I would want something different, like Starfleet Intelligence/black ops missions to spy on the Klingon and Romulan empires.

Kor

This.

Or, to follow the typical Disney/Marvel/Star Wars pattern the spin-off movies would focus on one of the main cast members.
See, the pattern is:

Star Wars VII
Rogue One
Star Wars VIII
Han Solo
Star Wars IX

Etc...

1 Phase One: Avengers Assembled
1.1 Iron Man (2008)
1.2 The Incredible Hulk (2008)
1.3 Iron Man 2 (2010)
1.4 Thor (2011)
1.5 Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
1.6 Marvel's The Avengers (2012)
2 Phase Two
2.1 Iron Man 3 (2013)
2.2 Thor: The Dark World (2013)
2.3 Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
2.4 Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
2.5 Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
2.6 Ant-Man (2015)
3 Phase Three
3.1 Captain America: Civil War (2016)
3.2 Doctor Strange (2016)
3.3 Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)

Each "phase" for the marvel movies fed into the ultimate group movie. So, to do it righ we should have had something like

Kirk academy movie
Spock academy movie
McCoy early movie
Star Trek 2009

Eugenics War movie
Section 31 black ops movie
Star Trek Into Darkness

Early founding Federation movie
Franklin crashes movie
Star Trek Beyond

Fair enough. I concede the point from a business standpoint. :ouch:

I would love it if they did this but there's just not the kind of demand for Star Trek movies that would make it worth it for the studio. I wish Star Trek was the kind of moneymaker Star Wars is, then we'd get constant market saturation, series, spinoff movies.

We could always try to find an alternate universe where Star Trek is more popular than Star Wars and enjoy all the massive amount of Trek content they are generating. The Section 31 show, the Starfleet Academy miniseries, the 25th century show, the Relativity movie that followed Voyager and wove through the storylines of all five series with cameos from each. I'm sure they're all fantastic. :)

Since Star Trek isn't the cash cow Star Wars is, it is a shame CBS/Paramount didn't have the same attitude Lucas did toward fan films. Instead of choking them off, we could have a vast treasure of fan films.

On the other hand, maybe it's because Trek isn't a cash cow that made the powers take such a harsh stand against fan films.

Probably had more to do with a guy raising $1.4 million from fans and using it to pay himself, to pay all his and his friends' expenses, running a merchandise operation which included selling model Star Trek ships and attempting to launch a film studio and somehow never actually making the Star Trek fan film everyone was donating for.

I somehow doubt Disney would tolerate the same, either.

What about a mini-series of six-to-twelve like what they are doing with the current "X-Files" and "24: Legacy" series? If these shows are successful, couldn't we then have a big-screen version of the spin-off movies? Just a thought. Or they could even do a mini movie-of-the-week on television.

The only thing in that vein that would make sense would be a TNG reunion mini-series, as TNG is the most popular of the modern-day shows. But even then, with most of the cast in their sixties, and Patrick Stewart in his late seventies, I don't see this being very viable. Maybe a sort of pass the torch thing to a newer generation, like The Force Awakens. Of course, with Discovery going down the pipe as we speak, such a mini-series has essentially zero chance of happening.

You know for years I'd wanted to see a Kelvin movie. Now if they're bringing George Kirk back it would be a great way to add more backstory to the Kirk family.

I've said it several times before but I think they should do what DC is doing and release direct to video animated full length films. That way you could do any time period and the original actors could do voice work regardless of how much they've aged since they played the character.

I would do Star Trek: Titan, Star Trek: Excelsior and Star Trek: Enterprise-B. Tim Russ would love it. He could be in all three.

Who would voice the characters for DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, Leonard Nimoy and Majel Barrett. Since all of them have passed away.

A Starfleet Intelligence/Black Ops thing could have been really cool if handled properly, but if it happened today it would likely just be a standard blockbuster action movie with the Star Trek label slapped on it.
