Star Trek sketch on Chris Pine-hosted SNL

Partly because it's an institution at this point, and partly because there isn't anything else NBC could put on in that timeslot that would get comparable ratings.

That's bullshit; I'm willing to bet that reruns of some current TV shows would work in that time slot, as well as original programming (say, a revival of The Midnight Special or Rock Concert minus Don Kirchner-although there's a risk of NBC-Universal stuffing a new The Midnight Special with nothing but pop artists from the Universal Music Group subsidiary and not with anry new current rock or electronica artists like the original show) or the nework could show movies like it used to, or reruns of The Tonight Show, or even (gasp) give that portion of the broadcast day back to the affiliates to show original programming like the aforementioned late night movies.

SNL had a great run, but it's not funny for a lot of people anymore, and just like its prime-time 60's counterpart Laugh-In, it's gone on a bit long and is stale. Plus (and as much as I hate to admit it), it's done the same crappy thing that Laugh-In did; serve as the election vehicle for an unprincipled man to become president of the USA, one even more worse than Richard Nixon-for that alone, it needs to go off of the air.

Other classice sketch comedy shows knew when it was time to end (Monty Python, Laugh-In, That Was The Week That Was, Royal Canadian Air Farce, The Frantics: Four On The Floor, etc.,) why can't SNL be like them and call it a day?

And that's not poppycock.

Carrey was great as Kirk, however, the sketch was insulting, racist and stupid (and I'm a black man that's supposed to be the target audience of that show's humour.) If the Wayans brothers wanted to target a show, target something that's really color-challenged like Friends. Or target a Afro-American sitcome that really deserves it, like Good Times.

.
I rather wish it would.......if only to see American comedy films find better shows to grab their casts from. Break the stranglehold already.

Like who? There was nothing wrong with the 2016 Ghostbusters film that I could see (for instance), it's just that SNL isn't as funny as it used to be even with the cast and personnel changes for most people and even with the shot in the arm that Trump's providing. Do you know any other funny commedic actors of the present day?

I think SNL is actually been pretty good since Tina Fey became the head writer and the trend has continued even after she has left. I know it was horrible for most of the 90's and even a year or so into this decade but it has improved greatly since then and it has produced a great deal of talent in that time.
As for the skit It didn't work like most of the Trek skits don't work and that is because I don't think most of the people on those shows care about Trek enough to mock it well. William Shatner's "Get a Life" skit is still the gold standard for Trek skits on that show and maybe all other shows as well.
