Star Trek satire in Doctor Who novel?

Hi all,

I'm sure I read a post about a year ago - maybe the last time we discussed "Ishmael"'s guest characters and cameos - about one of the more recent "Doctor Who" novels having either a satirical dig at "Star Trek", or perhaps a few thinly-disguised crossover characters?

I don't read or watch "Doctor Who", but I have a fairly good cosmic-consciousness awareness of it. My interest in dodos led to me picking up "The Last Dodo" (2007), but what was the Trekkish one, please? Was it Steve Mollmann who mentioned it?

I'm guessing it was The Blue Angel by Paul Magrs and Jeremy Hoad. There was a Star Trek- I don't know, pastiche might be the right word- as the Doctor and companions wind up aboard a ship that feels familiar.

I haven't read it since early 2000 but Magrs and Hoad take the story in some interesting directions, and, well, then there's-

...the K/S slash twist...

There's certainly some on-the-nose Star Trek parody in the recent Doctor Who audio drama "Earth Aid", and also the earlier "Bang-Bang-A-Boom!"

BBAB's more a Space 1999 pisstake, though- they may call the station Dark Space Three or whatever, but Graeme Garden's science officer is way more meant to be Victor Bergman...

The OP is definitely thinking of The Blue Angel, though.

It's not a novel, but Doctor Who's 2010 Christmas special does feature a distinctly Trek-style starship bridge, complete with Trek XI-style lens flares going off every four seconds.

Yeah, not really relevant. But I felt like pointing it out anyway.

If there's a novel, I can't remember it. (I haven't read The Blue Angel.) The two audios that James mentioned were the first to spring to mind.

Okay, thanks, maybe that was it? I went searching for a particular title at one point, but it wasn't around and then I forgot which one I was looking for.

I have so much on my "to read" pile I may never get to it. I think, even if I retired right now, I'll never get through all the books I've bought over the years. Sigh.

The fact that, even given how much longer it takes to write a book than to read it, and how few people write books, there are always more of them to read brings home how large the world is after all :).

Buying new books is always exhilarating. Reading them can be, too, but no guarantees.

Trying to find places to put unread books, so you'll remember there're unread...

It was also a Galaxy-class starship, iirc...

Doctor Who has had several starships classified as "Galaxy class" including two that pre-date TNG.
