STAR TREK; Runner

Re: STAR TREK; RUNNER- Initiative

Okay..I have recently gotten some EMAIL asking me who is FRANK GRAYSON and who is AUSTIN GRAYSON and what are the events I keep referring in this new story STAR TREK RUNNER. And who is this Narrenson guy questions as well.

To make a long story short; they are from past stories I have written here on the board. I have provided links to the Grayson saga below. In short? The story takes place in a reality where Star Trek is a fictional world..and how Frank Grayson was able to create a real USS ENTERPRISE and brought it into our real world...

At first HANK MORTON was a general at NORAD bent on destroying it...but he eventually joined the crew...NARRENSON was the 'bad guy' in these stories until his so called death in a pivotal part of the story that not only saw Narrenson die, but Frank as well...here are the links in order..just click on title to go there...

Look for real life appearences by Shatner, Stephen Hawking, and even Tim Russert. Russert's cameo was issued about three weeks before his tragic death. Howard Stern even appears as him self...yeah it is a little 'out there' but oh well...

and a special guest cameo by
Tiger Woods

CARDASSIA

Hank was about to leave the room, and Cardassia, when suddenly there was a bright flash. Q suddenly appeared. He was wearing a dark, stealthy looking jumpsuit.

“Where have you been?” Hank asked the impish being.

Q brushed off imaginary dust and surveyed the room and Narrenson’s dead body.

“Is he dead?” Q asked staring at the body.

“He’s dead. Now how about telling me what the fuck is going on?” Hank demanded.

“Give me that cursed thing!” Q demanded as Hank held the silver device in his right hand.

“Why should I?” Hank asked. “This technology comes from my universe and obviously Narrenson has been able to use it to fuck my life over. Maybe I can use it to fix things.”

“What makes you think I won’t just take it from you?” Q asked with a fiendish smile.

“If you could have you would have. Why do you want it?” Hank asked.

Q shook his head and gave Hank a dismissive look. The impish being sat down on the old worn out couch. “First, I need to rest.” Q said as he rested his head in his hands. “You have no idea how hard it is traveling around the universe while you’re trying not to be seen.”

“So that’s why you’re wearing a black jumpsuit?” Hank asked with a slight laugh. “Give me a break.”

“Laugh all you want.” Q said to him. “The material of this outfit is made up of a special fabric hand weaved from cosmic-string material. I had to pull in a lot of favors to get one of these.”

“Why? What is going on?” Hank asked as he sat in the chair next to the couch.

Q pointed at the device in Hank’s hand. “Your little friend there,” Q said as he motioned to Narrenson’s dead body, “was using that thing to tamper with the Quantum-dynamics of this universe. The Q has been doing our best to track him down and stop him but because this universe was created from the Server, as was that device there, it is hard to track its whereabouts. Since he is from your Universe and I have had the most contact with it, it fell to me to stop his meddling.”

“Excuse me,” Hank said, “but from what I know of you? You are a meddler too.”

“I beg your pardon sir.” Q said with a defiant look in his eyes. “I do not meddle.”

“Sure you do. Don’t forget Q, I have witnessed all of your dealings with Picard, Sisko and Janeway. You are a meddler and now you, and your Q friends, are upset because someone else can not only meddle with Picard and company; they can also meddle with you.”

“Wait a second,” Q said, “we Q are the Guardians of this Universe.” Q stated forcibly.

“I don’t see any green rings on your fingers.” Morton

Q looked at his own fingers. “Rings?”

“My point is this. Who decided you would be the Guardians of anything?” Hank asked.

Q thought for moment. “The Server did. If I understand this correctly, this Universe was created by the Server. The Server based this Universe on the thoughts of someone from your Universe. The Q must have been one of those creations. Our place in this Universe was decided by the Server and the person who’s mind we sprang from. So if this William Shatner fellow is really a God to my universe…”

Hank cut Q off. “You mean Gene Roddenberry.”

“Whatever,” Q said, “if the Q was set up as some force to guide the Universe and keep it in balance, the Server must have created it in such this way.”

Hank nodded his head. “You have a point.” Hank admitted. “But I am currently wanted for murder. Narrenson has no doubt been using this device in someway to incriminate me. If I give this to you then I’m up shit’s creek again. What has he done with this?”

Q nodded. “He used it to create a counterpart of you in this Universe. And since he used that thing to do it, he was able to create the character motivation of this other you as a murdering monster. So far the other you went on to kill a Vulcan on Deep Space Nine after killing a Starfleet agent on Risa.”

Hank shook his head. “How does the Voyager doctor fit into all of this?”

“Oh,” Q replied, “that hologram was already involved with an ongoing set of events already set into motion by this universe. Narrenson just merged his plot with your random plot. Remember, once I sent your friends home this Universe began to operate on its own. But it would appear as if this object,” Q said as Hank handed the device to him, “can still draw upon the Server’s power and effect change in this universe.”

“Okay, you can have it. What will you do with it?” Hank asked.

“I will take it back to the Continuum and we will study it. One of his final acts was to disrupt our ability to travel instantly through out the Universe. His actions also caused an imbalance in a neighboring galaxy. So we have a lot of work to do after we figure this thing out.”

“Can you at least send me back to Earth?” Hank asked. “Someone has to warn them about my murdering counterpart and get that doctor off the hook.”

Q thought for a moment. “Well,” Q said, “there are elements of the future that I can not change.”

“Can’t, or won’t?” Hank asked him quickly.

“I will send you back to Earth, I owe you that much.” Q agreed. “But the mess the hologram is tangled up in with must be allowed to evolve naturally.”

“What does that mean?” Hank asked.

Q thought for a moment and then snapped his fingers. Instantly both Q and Hank were transported away from Cardassia. Hank closed his eyes as the brightness of the flash of light was too bright to endure.

When he opened his eyes Hank was standing next to Q on very green field of grass. The sky above them was blue, and the sound of the ocean was near by.

“Where are we?” Hank asked.

“Duck.” Q said.

“Duck?” Hank retorted with.

“Yes! Just duck will you!” Q demanded.

The two ducked down to the ground as a white golf ball went zipping pass their heads on a trajectory further down the golf course.

“Where are we?” Hank repeated.

“Because of this thing,” Q looked at the device as he spoke to Hank, “I now have access to your Universe.” Q said with a smile. “I have brought you home to your Earth Mr. Morton.”

“But why?” Hank demanded. “I thought I had to stay there so that your Universe could exist.”

“This object,” Q said as he slid the small metallic object into his black jumpsuit, “will accomplish the same task.” Q said to him. “I think this is where we part ways Mr. Morton.” And then Q’s demeanor turned serious. “I will ask you and your friends not to come into our Universe again. If you violate this warning the Q now has the power to meddle here in your universe. And trust me; you wouldn’t like that one bit. Goodbye Mister Morton.”

“Q,” Hank asked before Q could leave, “what about the other me in your Universe. Who is going to clear my name and stop him from murdering again?”

“I understand your concern. But as I told you earlier, those incidents will have to be allowed to unfold naturally. They’re too small in scope in the grand scheme of things for the Q to worry about.”

“You son-of-a-bitch!” Hank said to Q as he pointed at him. “You double crossed me. But then, I should have seen this coming!”

Q smiled. “Yes, you should have. But trust me, this is the best ending to it all. Just go back to your life. It is the only way.”

And with that, Q was gone.

Hank began to walk across the greens. While in the middle of the fairway he met up with the person who had struck the gold ball that had nearly bonked him on the head.

“Hello Mr. Woods,” Hank said to Tiger Woods. “How is the rehab coming along?”

“Thanks for the concern, but the rehab is going good. Better than could be expected.”

The two men shook hands and went on their ways. One man was trying to get back to the sport he had dominated for years. The other was on his way to clear his name. Hank would not listen to Q’s warning. Hank was a man of strong moral content and would not let his name be dragged through the mud by a murdering double in a once fake, but now real, Universe.

Now, he thought to himself, where were Frank and Austin Grayson?

Stoney Burke

Mr. Devon
Hank Morton (2)

And
Q

EARTH
FEDERATION LEGAL DEPARTMENT
STONEY BURKE’S OFFICE

Stoney Burke was about to enter his office. Hank Morton had been brought in for questioning, but before Stoney could enter, Benton Cogley called to him.

“Can I have a word with you Mr. Burke?” Cogley asked.

“Make it quick.” Burke told him.

Cogley walked over to Burke and spoke in a soft voice. It was clear that didn’t want his conversation overheard by anyone else in the room, or on the other side of the door.

“Have your men figured out how Mr. Morton could be here? I have a well placed contact that put him on Cardassia just two days ago.” Cogley said.

Burked nodded. “We are aware of the situation.”

Cogley nodded. “Then it is possible that the person you have in there is either the real Mr. Morton or some facsimile. How will you be able to determine which is which?”

Burke smiled. “I already know which one it is Mr. Cogley. The better question, which I will ask him, is what is his motif for coming forward? I believe this Mr. Morton not only killed the President, but also killed the Vulcan admiral on DS9 and is somehow involved with the murder of my agent on Risa.”

“But shouldn’t you also be worried about the safety of the real Mr. Morton?” Cogely asked.

“We have lost contact with him. To where? No one knows. I hope to find out some answers in the next few minutes. Now if you excuse me, I need to talk to Mr. Morton.”

Burke entered the office leaving Cogley in the lobby. Cogley was about to leave the office building when he noticed a very attractive blond woman walking past him. Her breasts were ample, which always attracted Cogley. He would have to try his luck with her.

--
Burke sat behind his desk. Hank Morton (2) sat before him.

“I have to think you have a lot of questions to ask me.” Hank (2) said.

Burke nodded. “Thank you, I do. The very first being..”

“Who am I?” Hank (2) asked with a smile. “How could I possibly be Hank Morton? Well, obviously, I am not the Hank Morton you know rather I am his counter-part from this universe.”

“I don’t buy it.” Burke said. “If you were his counter-part then why are you not somewhere back in the past? As I recall, Mr. Morton comes from the 21st century in his universe. Why are you not somewhere in our past as well?”

“I was sent here from the past to save the Federation President. I failed my mission.” Hank (2) said. He had a cold stare, Burke noticed. Not the one filled with emotion that Hank (1) had.

Burke was an android, which only was known to a two people. His advance ability to ‘read’ humans was his forte. He could read Hank (2) very well; he was a killer.

“Yes,” Burke said, “the President is dead. You claim you saw Doctor Harry Zimmerman in the room. Why were you with the President yourself, and how did you get past the security check points one must pass to even get into this building?”

Hank (2) just smiled. “Divine intervention I guess.”

Burke pressed a button and two security officers entered the room.

“Take this man into custody.” Burke commanded them.

The two guards drew their weapons, waiting for Burke to stand up.

“I guess my facade is over.” Hank (2) said with an air of disappointment.

“Why kill the President?” Burke asked as restraints were put on Hank’s (2) wrists.

Suddenly there was a flash and Q appeared.

“Ah,” Hank (2) said with a devious smile, “you have found me.”

“You must be Q?” Burke asked.

“Yes, I am. I had originally decided not to concern myself with this trivial matter of yours,” Q said to Burke, then he looked to Hank (2), “but just incase the Q have decided to take this person off your hands.”

Burke shook his head. “I can’t let you take him. He killed the President of the Federation. He must answer for his crimes.”

Q shook his head. “No, he didn’t your useless President, I assure you.”

Burke looked to Hank (2).

Hank (2) chuckled. “I never said I killed your President. I did kill the admiral on Deep Space Nine,” Hank (2) admitted. “But, no, I didn’t kill the President. I wanted to, but someone else had already beaten me to the finish line.”

“Okay, enough of that, we have to go.” Q cut in.

Burke spoke quickly to Hank (2). “But you did see the hologram in the room. Did he kill the President? I must know.”

There was a flash and Hank (2) vanished. Q remained.

“What are you doing!?” Burke demanded from Q. “I have to know who killed our President. That man is a prime suspect, or at least, a prime witness. Who are you that you think you can meddle in our affairs?”

Q snapped his fingers and the two security guards vanished, leaving only Q and Burke.

“First off, my good sir,” Q said to Burke, “who are we to meddle? Who are you to stop us?”

“Picard told me much about your Continuum and that there had been new rules set up to regulate your interference in our concerns.” Burke stated flatly to Q.

“You actually listened to Picard?” Q said with a laugh. “We decided to interfere here due to that man’s unique abilities, given to him by that other universe. Now,” Q continued as he sat down in Burke’s chair, “You are right about one thing. By removing him from your case we have interfered with your investigation, as useless as it is. For that I will try to make an amends.”

Burke shook his head. “You and your kind amaze me. The truth, to you, is as moldable as clay is to us. How convenient that must be.”

Q smiled back at Burke. “The truth is moldable like clay? I love it. I’ll have to pass that one on to Picard seeing that he loves to turn things back upon me all the time.” Q said. Then Q stood up. “And yet I’m not the one hiding the fact that I am an android.”

Burke’s expression turned cold. “How do you know about that?” He asked softly.

“I am all knowing, all seeing.” Q replied softly. “Now look,” Q said with a friendlier sound in his voice. “I will tell you what I can, then you can go on from there.”

Burke, knowing that Q held all the cards, could only nod in agreement.

The powerful entity known as Q walked over to the white board that had names and events written all over it, with lines connecting some with others. Q snapped his fingers and instantly his Starfleet uniform was replaced by the kind of outfit worn by Sherlock Holmes.

“Don’t mock me.” Burke said to Q.

Q shook his head. “I only mock Picard, for you it will cost extra. Now listen closely. The Hank Morton from the other universe is no longer here, I sent him home from Cardassia. The Hank Morton who was just here, and I have so graciously taken from your custody, was created by another person from that other universe named Narrenson. To make a long story short he was out for revenge against those from his universe and was able to create absolute and instant change, to a limited degree, in our universe. The Q were finally able to stop him. He took his life on Cardassia and, thankfully, he died.”

Burked thought for a moment. “That’s all find and dandy, but what does that have to do with the murder of the President and one of my agents on Risa?”

“That’s where things get a little tricky.” Q told him. “This new Morton did kill the Admiral on Deep Space Nine. He was uses as a pawn by Narrenson to blur his revenge with your investigation. The murder of your man on Risa and the President are independent acts are not associated with the actions of Narrenson or the fake Morton.”

“But the real Hank Morton, the one you sent home, was a witness to the crime on Risa. I may need to talk with him again.”

Q shook his head. “I can not help you with that.” Q said. “Nor can I assist you in your investigation, even though I know the answer to everything about it. But, before I go, I will tip over one domino, I guess I owe you that much. Vash; don’t trust her. I did, and it got me burned. Now with that said,” Q said to Burke, “good luck and goodbye.”

There was a flash and Q was gone.

Suddenly there was a knock on the door.

“Come in.” Burke said as he sat back down at this desk.

The door opened and Benton Cogley came in.

“Where’d he go?” Benton asked.

Burke smiled. “I’ll tell you later. But first, you tell me something. Where is Vash?”

Cogley shook his head. “Why?”

“I want to speak to her. You are her lawyer, so I will ask you politely once. I don’t care where she is, find her and bring her to me.”

Benton nodded in agreement and left Burke’s office. Burke was preparing to go over his paper work when there was another knock at the door.

“Come in?” Burke said.

The old style door, with knob and all, opened up. Burke preferred the old style doors, they had more character than the usual sliding doors. Walking into his office was Mr. Devon; chief operational officer of Section-31, which was no longer as secretive as it once was. The fact it had someone as a label head was a first.

“Mister Devon,” Burke said as Devon sat in the chair across from him, “how can I help you? Do you need to re-bug my office?”

Devon smiled. “No, we’ll take care of that.” Devon said with a smile.

“How can I help you then?” Burke asked.

Devon took out a small black object and placed it on the desk.

“What is it?” Burke asked, not even attempting to hold the object. He just let the small, rectangular object, nearly the size of a hand, sit on the desk top.

“Not what,” Devon said, “but who.”

Burke looked closer. The object had lettering on it that was upside down from Burkes perspective and very small. Burke rotated the object and read the letters.

H A R R Y Z I M M E R M A N

“I give you,” Devon said softly, “Harry Zimmerman.”

"Going Home"

Featuring
Federation Investigator Stoney Burke
Lawyer Benton Cogley
Larima
Chakotay
Hank Morton
and
Saxon

Hank Morton opened his eyes as the sound of the bus driver’s voice came over the loud speaker. They had, at last, arrived in Colorado Springs. Hank Morton was at last; home.

Two days ago, having been dumped off by Q on a Golf Course in San Diego, Hank made his way to a local bank and was surprised to find his checking and savings account still untouched since his departure from this universe, his universe, two years earlier. He could have bought a plane ticket, but Hank needed time to think. And a long bus ride from San Diego to Colorado was just what he needed.

After retrieving his bag from the bus, Hank hailed a cab and was soon dropped off out side his home. It was still as beautiful as it was the day he and his late wife, Nancy, had finally finished its construction.

Hank used his keys and opened his front door and walked in. It was strangely quiet. The pictures on the wall were all still there. They were memories of the good times he had shared with Nancy, and their son Kurt, who had died in combat years earlier. Hank walked over to the family portrait that was perfectly centered above the fireplace.

“You looked happy back then.” A voice said from behind Hank.

Hank turned around to find Saxon standing behind him.

Saxon was the new head of Eight. Eight was the secret government organization that Narrenson had once been the head of as well. Eight had exploited the power of the Server for various reasons through out the past 60 years or so. In fact, it was the Server that had created the Star Trek universe, straight of the mind of Gene Roddenberry, in the first place.

“Why are you in my house?” Hank asked.

“It’s good to see you too Hank.” Saxon said with a wry smile. “I have been monitoring your arrival since you accessed your account for the bus ticket two days ago.”

“Why?” Hank asked.

Saxon shook his head. “Security measures Hank, you know the drill. We were told by Q that access to the Star Trek universe was no longer possible.”

“Q’s a liar.” Hank said. “Access is possible. In fact,” Hank said as he shook his head, “he pretty much warned me that if anyone from our universe went into his universe things could get bad for us.”

Saxon walked over to Hank and reached out his head. “Well, not to worry, no one has gone back. And it’s actually good to have you back at home. But I thought Q said someone from our universe needed to stay there in order for that universe to continue.”

Hank shook hands with Saxon and the two sat down on two oak chairs that were situated at the main dining table.

“They have one of those devices that Narrenson used to kill Frank with. Apparently that device is all they need to keep that universe alive.” Hank told Saxon. “Oh, and as it turned out,” Hank added, “Narrenson wasn’t dead after all.”

Saxon became worried. “What do you mean?”

“Well,” Hank explained, “things were going pretty well for me after you all went home. I became a celebrity and, with my military background, I made a good living for myself making speeches at various seminars in that universe.”

“Did you get to Vulcan?” Saxon asked.

Hank nodded. “Yeah, I did. It was much hotter than I thought it would be. In fact, while coming back from Vulcan I stopped at Risa for some rest and relaxation.”

Saxon smiled. “Risa? You went to Risa? Holy shit!”

Hank did not return Saxon’s smile with his own. “That is where everything started to go wrong.”

Saxon’s smile vanished. “What went wrong?”

A look of anger overcame Hank’s face.

“Narrenson happened.” Hank said softly

--
FEDERATION LEGAL OFFICE ON EARTH: PARIS FRANCE.

Two weeks had passed since the murder of the President of the Federation. The acting President, a Norp’hus male named Anjeetein, had been sworn in just a few days earlier.

Benton Cogley had been summoned by Stoney Burke. As soon as he materialized at the Investigator’s main office building, Cogley headed for Burke’s office and entered it to find two other guests sitting with Burke at his desk.

“Ah,” Burke said as Cogley entered, “Mister Cogley.”

Cogley walked over as the other two guests stood up. He recognized one of them as Chakotay, former first officer of the USS Voyager. The other was a beautiful woman who was obviously Bajoran.

Burke spoke. “I believe you already know Mister Chakotay.” Burke said as Cogley shook Chakotay’s hand.

“Yes,” Cogley said, “I do. Good to see you again.” Cogley said with a broad smile.

Chakotay’s smirk said more than his words. “Yes, it is good to see you again.”

Burke picked up on the fact that there had been more to their ‘just meeting’ but let it go. There was obvious disdain for each other. But knowing Cogley as well as he did, Burke didn’t find that too surprising at all.

“And she,” Burke said, “is the hologram’s wife; Larima.”

“You speak of my husband with no respect.” Larima said to Burke. “How dare you!”

Burke’s expression became serious, and he pointed at her with his index finger. “Your husband, the hologram, is chief suspect in the murder of the Federation President.” Burke replied. “Oh, yes, I forgot” Burke added, “the Federation granted the hologram rights, championed by the President no less, but I still consider him a computer generated abomination.”

Larima was about to strike Burke when Chakotay stopped her.

“What are you doing?!” She demanded of her former lover.

“What is going on here?” Cogley asked with a slight laugh, trying to relieve the stress.

Burke and Larima stood down.

Chakotay took over for Larima. “Well,” Chakotay said to Burke, “the hologram as you call him, we call him Harry Zimmerman, does have rights. And unless I am mistaken there have been no laws passed taking those rights away.”

Burke sat behind his desk. “No, there have been no laws passed. Admiral Janeway has pressed me on this issue as well, and that is why I have called the three of you here.”

The others took seats across from Burke’s desk. Burke directed his comments to Chakotay first.

“I have looked into the matter of the kidnapping of your son.” Burke told Chakotay. “The men who took him were employed by a man named Narrenson who was trying to blur his actions with the on going investigation into the death of an agent of mine on Risa, a Vulcan Admiral on Risa and now the President.”

“What is that supposed to mean?” Cogley asked. “That doesn’t make any sense at all.”

Burke continued. “The Admiral on Deep Space Nine was murdered with a device in Narrenson’s possession that allowed him to alter reality in an instant matter. Narrenson killed the Admiral in an attempt to cast doubt on the real Hank Morton, trying to make him a suspect in the death of my agent on Risa, to which Hank Morton is a person of interest as well.”

“What does that have to do with our son?” Larima asked.

Burke looked to her. “Narrenson no doubt had knowledge of our investigation. He hired the two men to kidnap your son and no doubt, had he gotten a hold of your son, Narrenson probably would have killed him and attempted to pin your son’s death on Mr. Morton as well. Narrenson had also created a duplicate Morton to help facilitate this facade. Your son was a convenient target to blur the investigation, and it almost worked.”

At that moment Burke opened up his desk and took out a strange looking rectangular object.

“What is that?” Cogley asked.

“Whom is that would be better to ask, wouldn’t it Mister Burke?” Chakotay asked as well.

Burke nodded and slid the object over to Larima. “Your husband.” Burke said with a sarcastic smile.

“What is this?” Larima asked as she picked up the object.

“When your husband was in the President’s office, we were able to capture him. His programming is contained in this object,” Burked looked over to Cogley, “which brings me to you.”

“What do you mean?” Cogley asked.

“Mr. Zimmerman, whether I like it or not, does have rights indeed. He has been charged with the murder of the President and my agent on Risa. His holo-emitter has been removed for obvious reasons. He can only be projected by that object, which also contains his entire programming. Any attempt to circumvent this device will lead to its instant demise. Why am I going through all these precautions?”
Burke finally asked.

“You want to have a trial?” Cogley asked.

“Why not?” Burke replied. “Don’t get me wrong, I think he killed my man on Risa and the President. But I want to know why. When I activated him he told me he would not talk with out legal representation.”

Cogley nodded his head. “And you know how much I like to be a needle in the eye of the Federation.”

Burke smiled, “Exactly. Now,” Burke told them, “I have arranged quarters for you here for the three of you in this building. You can not leave the compound with that,” Burke said motioning to the object. “You have 72 hours to interview your client, Mister Cogley. The legal department will want your official response by that time.”

“Understood,” Cogely said. Then he looked at Chakotay and Larima. “Looks like the three of us are going to have a sleep over. I suggest we find our selves some popcorn, and some good holo-vids to pass the time. I say we start off with Beach Blanket Bimbos.” Cogley said with a smile.

Larima stood up and grabbed Cogley by the collar.

“This is my husband,” She said as she handed Cogley the portable holo-projector, “so I suggest you take this a bit more seriously!” she said, nearly spitting her words at the lawyer.

Burke smiled. He was actually amused by it all.

The three of them left leaving Burke alone in this office. Burke sat at his desk and thought for a moment. He didn’t tell them how he had come into possession of the device. And the way in which he did come into possession of the device was, at best, suspicious. Mr. Devon seemed innocent enough when bringing Burke the device, but Burke didn’t trust Mr. Devon either.

The Shuttle-craft zoomed into space and headed towards its destination; the USS ENTERPRISE. Hank Morton watched as Saxon effortlessly piloted the craft.

“You seem to have that down pretty good.” Hank said with an approving nod of his head.

“Yeah, well,” Saxon began to say, “I have brought up many military and political dignitaries in the past couple years. Frank has really tried to use the ship’s technology to help conditions on Earth with out retarding the natural progression of man’s social evolution.”

“Whew,” Hank said with a mild laugh, “that actually sounded like some real official statement or something.”

Saxon cocked a grin, “I try.”

“But I would think that most people would want to be beamed up; like on the show.” Hank came back with.

Saxon shook his head. “You would think. But there is a small contingent of our world’s population that has gone out of its way to point out flaws with the Star Trek technology. It has scared many visitors. These groups actually want the ship to be handed over to an unbiased group, such as Greenpeace, to make sure the ship is used for the betterment of all. And on the flip side, there are some, especially who have a spiritual belief, who believe that beaming destroys a human’s God given soul and replaces it with something much less so.”

“Oh that’s just poppycock Greenpeace and religious madness,” Hank said with a smile, “it’s amazing what some people believe. And Greenpeace unbiased? What pipe have you been smoking from?” Then he thought for a moment. “Umm, so why are we using the shuttle? Why didn’t we just beam up?”

Saxon told him. “The ships engineering crew just finished doing the first real routine maintenance work on the Transporter system since Frank first created it with his dream those couple years ago. No one has volunteered to beam through yet even though it has been tested on rats and mice.”

“Gee, thanks for telling me.” Hank said with a concerned look.

Moments later the Shuttle flew through the opened hanger doors and landed perfectly next to the other shuttles. The massive hanger-bay doors were still closing as Hank and Saxon stepped off of the shuttle. Hank looked over at the huge opening of the hanger and out at Earth in the distance. It was an amazing view.

The sound of clanking metal could be heard echoing through the bay. Several men, none of whom Hank recognized, were working on one of the nearby shuttles while several other men were working on removed engine parts else where in the bay.

“There are a lot of new faces aboard.” Hank said to Saxon. “Did Frank sell out to the government?” Hank asked with a defiant tone to his voice.

Saxon chuckled and replied with, “Hardly.”

(flash back)
His hand was cold as he gripped the handle. But it wasn’t colder than the large sharp blade that glistened in the dark as stray starlight entered through the small crack of the uneven drapes. Even though he wasn’t a ‘real’ person, he still made the sounds of someone breathing. Even though his substance was really a holographic projection he still had mass, he still had a presence, and in every sense of the word he was real.

Harry Zimmerman was waiting; waiting patiently. He had a singular reason for being in the hotel room that he was in. It wasn’t his room, but it was the room of the man that Harry would kill on sight; Omar Jivah. The trail Harry had taken to get here was long and with many curves along the way.

(flash back with in the flash back)

It had started back on Bajor. He was in the office of his private practice waiting for Zhreal Anthis to arrive for her routine pregnancy check. The Bajoran woman was expecting her first child. But instead of going to the local Vedek for blessing and medical care, Anthis had decided to be cared for by the former Starfleet doctor Harry Zimmerman.

Harry, who was happily married to Larima, had opened his practice so as to be closer to his wife and their two adopted Bajoran sons. After winning his right to be considered a sentient life form, Harry used those rights to leave Starfleet several years later. He felt he had more to offer, medically, to a people busy with rebuilding their world than the stuffiness of a Starfleet career.

Harry waited for Anthis to arrive, but she never did; alive that is. While he was preparing to close shop he heard the sound of screaming; the kind of scream someone makes when their life is coming to a violent end.

With all the speed he could muster, Harry ran outside. A screaming woman, Anthis, was wreathing in pain, flat on the sidewalk, outside of Harry’s practice. She was soaked in blood. He looked over to the assailant, who was holding the blood smeared figure of a baby in his arms. The stranger looked Harry straight in the eyes, smiled, and then sped up into the air and out of site in a portable travel-pod. Harry didn’t have time to give chase. He turned his attention to Anthis. It was clear she would not live much longer.

Her mid section had been hack open, and blood and innards spilled everywhere. But more importantly, it was quite clear that someone had taken the unborn child from her. They had literally cut her open and took the child, leaving Anthis to die a horrible death. And despite all his efforts, she did just that; she died. Her final words were engraved in Harry’s programming;

“Omar Jivah…” she said softly, then died.

Soon the local Bajoran law enforcement had arrived. Harry recounted the terrible scene he had witnessed. He went with them down to their main building to try to see if there was anyone who matched the assailant’s description in their giant database.

As Harry zipped through the various images of criminals, he did not make a match. It was then that law enforcement officials began to change their line of questioning. It was apparent they no longer considered Harry just a witness; he was now a person interest.

It was then that Harry realized that he was being setup. Someone had gone through great lengths to involve Harry in the murder of the Bajoran woman and the abduction of her child. Harry decided to act before the officers made the first move. It was from that point on that Harry was on the run. He had to find the man who had killed Anthis, and if possible, rescue her baby.

(End of flash backs)

Benton Cogley, Larima and Chakotay had listened to Harry tell his sweeping tale; The senseless murder of the woman and the abduction of her baby. Both events were very hard to listen to with out it causing an uneasy feeling with in each person.

Harry stood in the center of the living quarters that had been provided by Stoney Burke. His holographic image was now being projected on a stand that did not allow for him to step off the stand at all. His portable emitter had been removed, thus he was not going anywhere. The moment had all gotten to the room they had activated Harry’s program and, soon, they all listened to this first part of his adventure.

But as Harry looked at the three of them he could tell they had their doubts.

“You three don’t believe me do you?” Harry asked Larima directly, though he aimed his words at Chakotay and Benton Cogley as well.

Larima looked perplexed. “Honey, it is not as if I don’t believe you. But I work there with you at the office. I do all of the so called paper work so you don’t have to. And for the like of me I do not recall you ever having a pregnant Bajoran woman as a patient. This is the first I have ever heard of this.”

“You’re story sounds too hard to believe for me as well.” Chakotay said with a sarcastic tone in his voice.

“I wouldn’t expect you to believe anything I said.” Harry said with a tone of anger directed at Chakotay.

“Well,” Benton said interrupting what he could tell was a brewing argument, “I find this all quite interesting.” He lit his second cigar, took in a deep inhale, and then motioned for Harry to continue. “Go on,” Benton said, “continue.”

Harry could not only see the look of doubt in Chakotay’s eyes, he could also see something else in Larima’s eyes as well. She still loved Chakotay. But now was not the time to delve into that issue. Harry searched his memory then continued with the story.

Meanwhile, on real Earth (OUR EARTH)

The Turbo-lift doors opened and for the first time in over two years Hank Morton stepped onto the bridge of the USS ENTERPRISE; Frank Grayson’s Enterprise. Sitting in the center seat, as much a part of that seat it seemed to Hank as Kirk had been in the fictional world of Star Trek, sat Frank Grayson.

“Why you dirty fucking son-of-a-bitch!!!” Frank said with a broad smile.

Frank ran up to the upper part of the bridge and he and Hank hugged each other. Just then the Turbo-lift opened and Austin Grayson exited and was overcome with happiness upon seeing Hank for the first time in two years. It was good to be back, Hank thought to him self as he was caught up in the excitement of the others. Wait until he told them why he was here, he also thought to him self. He laughed with them as he thought of how to convince them to go back to the Star Trek universe and risk a war with Q!!!

“There Is No Going Back”

Featuring
Hank Morton
Frank Grayson
and Saxon

The USS ENTERPRISE, Frank’s Enterprise to be more exact, was in orbit of Earth.

Hank Morton, Saxon and Frank Grayson walked through the corridors of the ship. Hank was really impressed with the running of the ship. Much of this had to do with the new XO; Major Travis Brown. Travis, who was African-American, was the son of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, General Steven Brown. Both were men that Hank would have trusted with his life had he still be in active service.

“You did a great job hiring Travis. He is a good man. What happened to Mark?” Hank asked, in reference to Mark Grayson, Frank’s older brother who had been the XO of the Enterprise.

“Well,” Frank said, “Mark and Reymia finally got married and they both wanted to start a family of their own.” Frank shook his head. “My brother is now the married man, who would have though of it?”

Hank chuckled. “Well,” Hank added, “Reymia had a nice rack. And you two know how I feel about women with racks.”

Saxon smiled. “Yes we do. So anyway,” Saxon continued, “I suggested to Frank that we try to get some kind of military presence on board; one that would recognize his command. I did back ground checks and the best person for the job was Travis. Luckily his military record shows a streak of independent thought.”

“Well, you could have asked me.” Hank said as he puffed on his cigar. “I could have told you that with out any computer database.”

Frank nodded in agreement. “So what brings you back home Hank? I thought you wanted to stay over there since, well, you know.” Frank didn’t mention it, but he was referring to the death of Hank’s wife, Nancy, and the loss of their son in the war in Afghanistan.

The three of them made it to the briefing room and took their seats at the table. Hank looked around the room. It was an eerie place to come back to know that it was here where Narrenson, Saxon’s predecessor at Eight, had engineered the death of Frank. But Hank let the memories go and answered Frank’s question.

It took a few moments but Hank recounted his life as it had transpired after Frank and the others had left the Trek universe and had come home. He told them how Narrenson had not died as they had thought. He had transferred his ‘life essence’ into that of a counter-part of himself that he had created with the Server. None of this was known to Hank until he came across the Voyager doctor kneeling next to the body of a dead man named Omar Jivah.

Hank soon found himself a suspect not only in the murder of Jivah, but also the murder of Hank’s good friend S’tov, a Vulcan Starfleet Admiral. It was while he was on the run that Hank ended up on Cardassia where he had an eventual run in with Narrenson.

“Narrenson was totally deranged.” Hank told Saxon and Frank. “He blamed me for causing his ruin here in this universe. So by using one of those pen devices he killed you with Frank,” Hank said softly, “he was able to somehow manipulate certain events in that Star Trek universe. Since it used energy that was provided by the Server, the same energy that created the Trek universe, that device was able to bend the laws of reality.”

“How do you know this?” Saxon asked.

“Narrenson knew that the Q was closing in on his position; so he killed himself. Q eventually arrived and revealed to me that Narrenson had evaded the Q for sometime. And Q also told me that Narrenson had used the device to create a doppelganger of me. It was then that Q told me that the device could alter reality.”

“Wow,” Frank said. “Go on.”

“Well, it would appear, there was another ‘me’. This other Morton, Q told me, killed S’tov. After telling me all this, Q brought me back here into our universe, and left me in San Diego at Torrey Pines. Before leaving, however, he warned us never to come back to the Trek universe. It seems as if they have the Server. And if we try to go back the Q might just destroy this universe to stop such crossovers.”

Saxon shook his head. “That is not possible; Hank.” Saxon said. “I still have the Server. As soon as we got back I put it back inside its stable case, and it is still hidden in that place that only I can find. I promise you, it is still there.”

Frank shook his head. “Wait a minute,” Frank said. “Who is to say there is only one Server?” Frank asked them. “They probably have a meteor impact site in their Arizona just like we have here. Who’s to say the Server doesn’t have a counter-part as well.”

“I hadn’t thought of that.” Hank agreed.

“But it doesn’t matter.” Frank said to Hank Morton. “We’re not going back there anyway. I mean, why would we?”

“Because,” Hank said to his good friend Frank Morton, “the other me is over there doing God knows what. And I think we should also help try to clear the Voyager Doctor’s name.”

Frank shook his head again. “Hank, listen to me. I understand what you’re saying, I really do. I know first hand how it feels to be thought of as some whack job simply trying to convince people that this ship is and was real.” Frank continued. “But you’re talking about making things right in a fictional universe created by some alien object. On top of that, Q has threatened us all with some kind of punishment if we do go back to the Trek universe. Why risk everything for another universe? Just let it go and live your life here. You’re home now.”

Hank shook his head.

“Listen,” Frank pressed, “we have done some good things with the Enterprise while you have been gone. We have helped build a special waterway to transfer much needed water to the western United States from the over flooded areas of the southern states. We have been able to create, and maintain, a stable fresh water lake in the Sahara. Inglehopper has used the medical knowledge to help find cures to some of the harshest of diseases, including cancer. Now, with that done, we are about to embark on our first mission beyond out solar system. I want you to be there! You are the engineer I want down there keeping this ship afloat!”

The thought of going on the Enterprise’s first mission did appeal to Hank. Frank was right, Hank thought to himself, why risk it all for another universe?

“The Voyager Doctor, Harry Zimmerman is his name by the way, is innocent. I can not go on here knowing that I have left an innocent man there to fend for his life against a system that doesn’t even consider him a real person. I don’t abandoned people like that.” Hank told them both.

“Do you hear yourself?” Saxon asked. “They don’t even consider him a real person, even though they did pass laws saying so.” Saxon added.

“You can’t go back Hank.” Frank said softly. “You’d be putting our universe at risk of some reprisal by Q. I can not allow that.”

The tension level began to rise.

“What do you mean you can not allow? I am not some child Frank.” Hank said with anger in his voice.

“How are you going to get back there; Hank?” Frank said pointedly. “You need the Server, and I am willing to bet that Mr. Saxon here isn’t going to let you go back either.”

Saxon nodded his head. “I have to go with Frank on this one.” Saxon said. “There are too many ways for this to go wrong, and not enough to gain if you do go over there and correct what ever you think you’d be helping. You need to let it go Hank, for the sake of us all.”

As the three men continued their discussion they were unaware that they were being observed; by Q.

Suddenly there was a flash, and Q stood before them.

“Why did I know somehow that you would show up?” Frank asked Q.

“Oh be quiet.” Q said to Frank. Then he shifted his attention to Hank. “Why is it you humans always have to worry about such silly things as honor or reputation?”

“I would have thought all that time with Picard and Janeway you would have figured it out by now.” Saxon said to Q.

With out a retort, Q snapped his fingers and suddenly a very young girl, maybe 16 years old at best, appeared. Her name was Rebecca Johnson.

“Okay Q,” Hank said to Q as the girl flashed into view. “What’s going on?”

“Hello,” the girl said sheepishly.

“Her name is Rebecca,” Q said with a fatherly look on his face. “And since I don’t have all day to go into temporal mechanics, let us just say that she will be going over to my Universe for a while.”

Hank walked over to the girl. “Is he abducting you?” Hank asked.

“Oh, come on, I am really surprised you think that way of me!” Q protested.

“Did you tell her about Admanda?” Saxon asked.

“Who is Admanda?” Rebecca said with a confused look on her face.

“Forget that for now,” Frank said, and then he looked to Q, “you must have some reason for taking her Q. What is it?”

“The Q,” Q announced, “have decided to destroy our Server. You were right, we found one, just like yours, in our Universe at that whole in the ground in California.”

“You mean Arizona.” Saxon corrected Q.

“Oh, whatever,” Q said, “anyway, we have decided that it is far too powerful, even for us, to control. So, we destroyed it. We had to Nova around two hundred stars to do it, but we did it.”

“If you’re asking us to destroy ours; the answer is no!” Saxon said.

“First, let me say,” Q said to Saxon, “if I wanted too I could, and there would be nothing you could do to stop me.”

“Okay,” Hank cut in, “so what’s the catch.”

“That’s why I always liked you Hank,” Q said, “you were always to the point.”

“Well, gee,” Hank said, “throw me a party.”

“Anyway,” Q said, “the Q have concentrated our power and we are quite content that no one from your side, with the help of the Server, will be able to penetrate the barrier we have set up between our reality and this one.”

“What does the girl have to do with this?” Frank asked. “Do her parents know you are taking her?”

Rebecca shook her head. “No, they don’t.” She said in a soft voice. “But they would have wanted it this way.” She fought back the urge to cry.

“Q,” Saxon said, “we’re not going to let you take this girl if something is going on.”

Q snapped her fingers and the girl was gone.

Hank grabbed Q by the collar of his Starfleet uniform. “What did you do with her?!!! WHAT DID YOU DO!?” Hank yelled as he prepared to punch Q.

With his hands in the air Q spoke quickly. “Listen,” Q said, “Just listen for me for a minute.” Hank let go of Q’s collar. Q straightened up his shirt then continued. “Gee,” Q said as he checked his neck for injury, “don’t you people treat Gods with respect over herer?”

“You are no God.” Hank said with anger in his voice.

“The girl,” Q told them, “died earlier today.”

“How?” Frank asked. (CLICK HERE TO LINK TO SPECIAL STORY THAT WAS PART OF THE AUGUST CHALLENGE)

After hearing the story Frank, Saxon and Hank agreed with Q’s reasons.

“So, as you can see,” Q said, “she’s dead in this universe. But over there, she can at least be alive.”

“Alright,” Frank said, “why even come here and tell us this? You could have taken her and we never would have known.”

Q nodded. “You’re right, I could have.” Q said. “But since we in the Q are going to rid our universe of its Server, we still require someone from your universe to live in our universe to assure our universe’s survival.” He then looked to Hank. “We want you to come back.”

Hank laughed. “That’s exactly what I want.” Hank said.

Q nodded. “It all makes sense doesn’t it?” He said with a smile.

Frank stepped in. “But what about the murder charge he faces over there.” Frank asked Q. Then he looked back to Hank. “Are you sure you want to go back there?”

“Look,” Q said, “I will do everything in my power to make sure you come out of it innocent and, a free man.”

Hank nodded. “Okay,” Hank said, “I agree.”

“Hank,” Saxon said, “If what Q is saying is true, you might not ever get to come back.”

Hank nodded. “I know. I was prepared for that possibility two years ago.” Hank said. “I have nothing for me here.”

“Well,” Q said, “I hope there isn’t going to be any long and drawn out goodbye. We have to go before the barrier becomes too much stronger so that even I can’t cross it.”

Hank shook hands with Saxon and Frank. They said their goodbyes and in an instant…they were gone.

LAS VEGAS

STAR TREK CONVENTION

John De Lancie stood in the green room waiting for his chance to go on stage at the Las Vegas Star Trek Event. The chanting of the crowd could be heard from beyond the door.

“You?” Jonathan Frakes asked De Lancie. “Nervous?”

De Lancie smiled. “No, but I like to get my self up for these things. I always seem to do a little better when I am anxious.”

“Me too,” William Shatner said.

“So, Bill,” Jonathan Frakes asked, “What was it like being up there, on the real Enterprise, with Stephen Hawking?”

“It…was…quite interesting to be, up there…on that ship..with…one..of..the most intelligent men, if not the most intelligent being in the universe!” Shatner said with a wide grin.

Suddenly there was a flash and Q was standing there, toe to toe, with John De Lancie.

“What the?” De Lancie said in utter shock.

“Hmmm,” Q said, “I guess there is some resemblance.”

“Who are you?” De Lancie asked.

Q just shook his head. “You’re just not from the bright side of the applecart.” Q said to De Lancie, and in flash…Q was Gone.

TREK universe
Star Fleet Investigations Office

Chakotay, Larima and Cogley stared at the holographic image of Harry Zimmerman. They were all stunned by the incredibly tale Harry had just told them. How the power elite in Starfleet had been taken over by parasites the NCC-1701 D had encountered years earlier. He told them how they were about to spring their intent to take over the federation. The doctor had found all of this out when his emitter accidentally intercepted a coded signal from the home planet of the parasites. It was a signal that was intended for Starfleet command, and more specifically the office of Mr. Devon, the head of Section-31.

A deal had been struck between Section-31 and the parasites to allow the parasites to take over the military wing of Starfleet in exchange for advanced technology the Federation could use to finally destroy the Borg. But Section-31 planned to double-cross the parasites eventually. And with most of the Admiralty infected, and later killed, by the exposure of the plan, Section-31 would promote Captains and other high ranking officers that were loyal to Section-31. In essence, Section-31 would use the parasites to sweep away the Admiralty for a new one staffed with those loyal to Section-31. When Section-31 found out, they sent an operative, Omar Jival, to Bajor to find out the extent of Harry’s knowledge of the information, and to kill anyone he might have told.

Section-31 also, realizing there was a signal path they could exploit that led directly into Harry’s programming, and cause him to kill and murder anyone. But, Omar Jival was a double agent. No only did he work for Section-31, he also worked for the Starfleet Investigation unit. Once Omar found out the true intent of Section-31 they had the doctor kill him. Thus setting forth a chain of events that, somehow, became entangled with the Q and humans (Narrenson/Hank Morton) from another reality.

“How in the hell are we going to prove something as crazy as that?” Chakotay asked.

Suddenly there was a flash; Q, Hank Morton and Rebecca Johnson stood there.

“Perhaps I can help.” Q said with a broad smile.

Chakotay, Larima and Cogley all stood up as Q, Hank Morton and Rebecca Johnson all flashed into view.

“What’s going on here Q?” Chakotay asked.

“I think you know.” Q said to Chakotay.

“Who is this man?” Larima asked them all.

Q shot her a very annoyed look. “Who am I? Why, my dear, I am; Kai Q”. And at that instant Q’s Starfleet garb was replaced by ceremonial robes of a Bajoran religious leader.

Larima lurched toward Q but was held back by Chakotay and Hank Morton, “Do you mock me!!?” Larima demanded of Q.

Q chuckled, “No my dear, I only mock Republicans.”

“Who are Republicans?” Cogley asked as Q flashed back into his Starfleet uniform.

“Exacly.” Q replied to Cogley’s question.

Chakotay and Hank Morton released Larima as she calmed down. Chakotay walked over to Q.

“I need more time.” Chakotay said to Larima.

“More time for what?” Cogley asked as he walked over.

“Yes,” Harry said from his holo-stand, “what do you mean you need more time?”

Hank Morton chimed in as well. “What is he talking about Q?”

“Umm, Who are you?” Chakotay asked Hank Morton.

“My name is Hank Morton.”

“Ah, yes,” Chakotay said, “Kate told me about you and your associates. In fact,” Chakotay said to Laira, Cogley and Harry, “this is the man who saw you (Harry) at the hotel on Risa.”

“And he happens to be my client. Good to see you again Mr. Morton.” Cogley said as he came over and shook Hank’s hand.

“I find this all very hard to believe.” Hank said to Cogley and Q. “And why is it, Mr. Cogley, that you seem to be everywhere at the right time. You were there dealing with Frank Grayson and Admiral Janeway, then you were there on Risa, now you are here. I may not be the brightest duck in the flock, but I still know how to float on the water.”

Cogley looked to Q. “This is why we humans are very entertaining.”

Q chuckled, “I have never been let down.”

“Wait a second,” Chakotay demanded of Cogley, “are you one of the Q?”

Cogley tried to light up another cigar, but Chakotay took the stogey out of Cogley’s mouth and threw it to the ground.

“Uh uh,” Chakotay said with anger, “you answer my question first.”

Cogley looked over to Q. Q nodded his head. Cogley looked back to Chakotay.

“I am Q,” Cogley said, “but I only became one about four years ago.”

“What were you before?” Hank asked.

“I’ve always been a lawyer, just as I am now.” Cogley told them.

“The reason we offered him a position was simple,” Q said. “With Q trying to reform our ways we decided we needed representation. So instead of posing as one of you we decided to enlist one of you as our emissary.”

“And you picked a seedy, two-bit lawyer like this guy?” Hank asked with a laugh.

“Hey, I’m offended!” Cogley said with a sarcastic smile.

“Excuse me.” Harry said from his holo-stand. “This is all very fascinating, but what does this have to do with Chakotay asking for more time? Certainly he isn’t a Q. The standards can’t really be that low.”

Chakotay shot Harry a perturbed look.

Q explained. “The Q no longer overtly direct the flow of the universe. But we also have an interest in the human adventure. To better understand a society based on legal principle we elicited the help of Mr. Cogley here. But we became aware of a threat to the Federation; those blasted wormy, squiggling, parasites. So we decided to contain the problem and approached Chakotay here. We knew, since he was no longer in Starfleet, he would not be a target to infect. But he also had connections in the Starfleet, mainly Kate.”

“Why not just snap your fingers and make the parasites all go away?” Hank asked.

“Didn’t you hear me?” Q asked Hank. “We don’t work like that any more.”

Hank shook his head. “I’m not buying this Q. Asking a egotistical God being, like you, to not use his power is like asking a caterpillar not to become a butterfly.”

“Go ahead and tell him the rest.” Cogley urged Q.
--
Unknown to Q, and the others, the conversation going on between them was being observed by some else. Stoney Burke listened intently as he watched the scene unfold via a viewing device that was hid inside a subspace bubble inside.

At that moment Mr. Devon came into the room, the current head of Section-31. Stoney Burke turned off the viewer he was watching as Devon came in. Devon sat in the chair on the other side of Burke’s desk.

“So, Stoney, is there any news as to what is going on between Cogley and the others?” Devon asked.

Stoney shook his head. “The judge struck down our request to tap the room, so we have no idea what is happening in there.”

“Perhaps the judge said no to you, but they said yes to us.” Devon said to Stoney.

“What do you mean?” Stoney asked.

Devon smiled. “We have a subspace recorder hidden in the room. The signal is being collected and we should have some clue as to what is going on once Q leaves. I think we may have some information to use at Harry Zimmerman’s trial after we decode the signal. Perhaps, for all we know, Harry has been an enemy agent, for the Q, even before he returned from the Delta Quadrant. If so convicted he will be deactivated.”

Of course, Stoney already knew about the recorder, having been tapping the feed of the signal just moments before. He was also now aware of the story Harry had just told about the parasites. What Devon didn’t know was that Stoney was well aware of Section-31s alliance with the invading parasites.

But unknown to Stoney Burke, Devon listened to a transmitter that had been implanted in his brain for covert communication Ops. The news Devon received was not good. The subspace device that was hidden in Cogley’s room had been diverted to another location first, and then to Section-31 HQ. What was the other destination? Burke’s office.

The moment the transmitter’s signal was turned off, Burke hurled the desk between them to the other side of the room with a quickness that defied all rational thought. Stoney grabbed Devon by the neck and lifted him out of his chair, and in no time pinned the head of Section-31 against a wall.

Devon struggled for air.

“What…are…you?” Devon asked as Burke began close his hand around Devon’s throat.

“The LAW!” Burke replied with a calm anger.

The universe around Hank Morton and Rebecca Johnson flashed in an instant. One moment they were standing in a room inside the Starfleet Investigator’s office on Earth? The next they were surrounded by a universe only defined in white light. Hank knew where he was, having traveled with Q before. Hank and Rebecca were in the realm of the Q, no doubt a pocket of subspace, Hank concluded.

“Where are we?” Rebecca’s innocent voice asked.

Hank, and the others, hadn’t paid Rebecca enough attention. Now, it was time.

“Who are you?” Hank asked. “Just what is your connection with Q?”

Rebecca looked as innocent as one could be, but the question seemed to depress the young girl.

“I’m sorry,” Hank said as he took the young girl’s hand into his. “I didn’t mean to hurt you.”

The young girl started to cry as Hank pulled her closer and hugged her like a father would. “Did Q hurt you in someway?” Hank asked Rebecca in a whisper.

“No,” she replied softly. “My brother died because of me, and Q allowed me to change places with my brother so that he could live.”

So, Hank thought to himself, Q altered the time-line, in the real universe, so that this young lady could change places with her brother. Although Q may have acted unselfishly by letting this happened, it also demonstrated that Q, and others like him from the Star Trek universe, could alter the events in Hank’s universe.

Rebecca started to regain her composure. “Where are we?” she asked as he dabbed at her eyes with the sleeve of the sweater she wore.

“You’re with me.” Q’s voice replied, and instantly, he stood before them.

“What is going on Q?” Hank demanded. “One moment we’re discussing parasites with the others and the next, we two, Rebecca and I, are here; Why?”

“What makes you think you can question me at all?” Q replied.

Hank smiled. “Listen Q,” Hank said, “I was once a God, I was General in the United States Air Force. I made decisions that affected the men and women in my command, but those decisions also impacted the very country I was serving.”

“And that made you a God?” Q said with a slight chuckle.

“Sure it did.” Hank answered right back. “But even I answered to the President. I think, somewhere with in that Continuum of yours, there is a hierarchy as well. Perhaps they even witness everything you do. And maybe, after your civil-war, tighter controls were implemented, heck who knows?”

“So you think I answer to a higher authority?” Q asked with a soft voice.

“I don’t claim to know, I just believe in the rigid control of the chain of command. And you are acting, more and more, as a lower rung on that chain. But enough of this,” Hank said as tried to get back on message, “what is going on here? What are you going to do with us?”

Q thought for a moment. “In your universe the events of this universe, my universe, were part of an entertainment program.”

“Yeah,” Rebecca said suddenly, “you’re that guy!!! Cupid!”

Hank laughed at that. “No honey,” Hank said to her, “not Cupid, just Q.” Hank looked back to Q. “Yeah, Star Trek was just a program in our universe.”

“Were you aware of the parasites that had invaded the Federation and had taken control of many of Starfleet’s top officers?” Q pressed.

“Yes. And according to Data they had come from deep space. What about it? Picard and his crew were able to stop them.” Hank explained to both Q, and in some regard, to Rebecca.

“Wait a second.” Rebecca said, as the reality of what was going on started to connect. “Are you telling me that we are inside of a TV show? Does this have something to do with that real Star Trek ship?”

Hank nodded. “Yes; dear,” Hank told her, “we are in the Star Trek universe.”

“Umm,” Rebecca said with a smile, “wow.”

Q rolled his eyes. “Any way, for some reason we can not explain, the Q can not track, and we have never been able to track, the parasites. So when they got as far as they did last time, until Picard and his ship of fools stopped them, it was all a surprise to us.”

“So what does this have to do with Chakotay?” Hank asked.

“We had to have an agent working for us, because for all we knew the parasites were able to track our movements. I approached Chakotay about two years ago when there were signs that Parasites had returned. We gave him two choices. Track down the infected Starfleet officers, and then deal with them. Unfortunately it became apparent that some other entity we can not pin-point has been blocking Chakotay the entire way.”

“You said you gave him two choices. What was the other?” Hank asked.

“Well, the second choice was to have him, Chakotay, travel back through time, back to the Delta Quadrant and look for answers there.”

“Why not just send him there now?” Hank asked.

“We can not overtly alter the time-line any longer. We can steer time,” Q said to Hank, “but we can act on subtle change. I told you earlier that we in the Q can not track where the parasites are coming from. As you said, Data had charted the path of the homing signal, but when we investigated the location? We found nothing. But we were able to determine that the parasites were entering this dimension from somewhere with in the Delta Quadrant.”

“Okay,” Hank said, “so just go on to the Delta Quadrant and stop them from coming into this universe.”

Q shot him a look of anger. “It isn’t that easy.” Q said. “This second wave started some time back and we can’t track every one of the little wormy things. We have to stop them at the point of time they came into the universe. And we have determined that the USS VOYAGER, while it was trying to find a way home to Earth, was the closest to the area of the Deltra Quadrant we believe they are coming from.”

Suddenly there was another flash and Cogley stood there.

“What are you doing here?” Q asked Cogley.

“I am here to warn you not to say anything else Q. At least don’t continue with out legal representation.” Cogley said.

“Is it because…” Q began.

“Yes; exactly.” Cogley said to Q. Cogley then looked over to Hank.

“I think I know where this is headed.” Hank said. “You are going to send us back through time, back to the Voyager, to make sure they take either another route, or, slow down their advancement so as they might find the planet, or wherever, those things come from. Why us?” Hank asked as he motioned toward Rebecca.

“Because,” Q answered, “we destroyed our version of the Server. We are not confident about sending Chakotay back into the past with out someone from your universe.”

“You mean you are using us to ensure that your universe survives in a time before your universe attained its own independence.” Hank said.

“Yep,” Cogley said, “that’s part of it. But also we are quite sure the Parasites can not track your movements as well.”

“Well, how do we force Janeway and her crew to do anything?” Hank asked.

There was another flash and suddenly Chakotay stood there.

“Because,” Q said as Chakotay flashed into view, “you’re not going alone.”

--
Stoney Burke watched the entire sequence in Q’s subspace bubble. Burke nodded in agreement. “They are most certainly not going alone.” Burke said to himself as he looked down at the dead body of Mr. Devon. “The Law will go with them as well.”
