I guess it could have been a lot worse, considering how bad some of the Season 3 ones were after the severe budget cuts of 1968("The Empath," anyone?)...

I've always liked the empath, possibly because I've always thought Katherine Hayes was enchanting. The minimalist sets I think actually helped add to the eeriness of the setting and made the viewer concentrate on the story and characters instead of distracting from them.

Any time that ep is discussed there's always a sharp diversity of opinion. While it's never going to have the universal acclaim of some episodes, just the fact that it is controversial shows that "The Empath" was not a total failure. It certainly was a provocative episode as opposed to some episodes that just don't raise any kind of reaction or universally bad reactions.

It was a decent/acceptable episode. Gem was eerie and fun. But the sets were TOO minimalist for my tastes, and spurred on by the drastic budget cuts initiated in 1968. The episode might have been better with some more fleshed-out sets and effects.

I caught the second half and saw the quick establishing shot of the hand holding the ship - and broke out laughing.

These effects are supposed to be BETTER?!

Good God.. those effects are *awful*.

They weren't very creative with the effects in this episode. The hand was rather a letdown.

The hand was good. Could have been better though. Some sweeping, 180-degree circular shots of it would have been much nicer.

Note to Okuda and his team: STOP being so slavish to being THAT damn diligent to the original intent of the old optical effects. Some of them...sucked. They should never have been duplicated. Only replaced with something infinitely better.
