The Immunity Syndrome (Repeat)

After receiving a distress call from the Intrepid and loosing contact with Gamma 7A, the U.S.S. Enterprise is ordered to Sector 39J to investigate. As it approaches its destination, the ship encounters an ominous dark area in space. Long-range sensors show that the system, and its billions of people, are now dead. But soon the mysterious dark mass begins to drain the starship’s mechanical and biological energy as well. With other inhabited systems at stake, Kirk must risk his ship and crew to locate the cause of the power “draining” void before everyone on the ship is dead.

I always liked this one. It has its corny moments (too much, WAY too much falling out of the chairs) but the unthinking, unapologetic threat (giant amoeba) is really a chilling adversary. The re-mastered effects were nicely done, especially those of the Enterprise in the "zone of darkness". And they didn't change the look of the amoeba at all. It was one of the original series' best effects.

The dialogue between Spock and McCoy was really nice as well.

I always liked this episode even if the premise was a little far fetched for me. A giant space dwelling single celled organism? What? (Voyager's living nebula made more sense.) How would something like that evolve? But besides that the threat is tangible and the solution to the problem interesting. However, echoing Hambone's comments, there are some rather corny moments that detract from the over all episode plus some of the acting makes me hungry for a ham sandwich. I gave it a B-.

As for the remastering, it was right on the money. They really sold the Enterprise in the dark area (while making her absolutely beautiful) and didn't screw around with the organism, which was perfect in the original. I gave it an excellent.

I agree a single celled organism in space is a bit far fetched, but then again so are some simple Star Trek themes like well any kind of space travel(including beaming one up)

There have been worse premises that made Star Trek movies.

The episode was always one of my favorites. There really wasn't much change to be done with it till near the end when they get in the nuclei and when they first see the amoeba. And they did those well.

Great Remastered effects. Great story. Always loved this one. Appropriately creepy and corny all at the same time.
