Obsession

While serving on the U.S.S. Farragut, Kirk was a survivor to a deadly alien entity, one with the ability to drain the red blood cells from a person in order to sustain itself. Now, eleven years later, the U.S.S. Enterprise encounters what the captain believes to be the same lifeform. But rather than follow orders and continue his mission to delivery vital medical supplies, the captain begins to pursue the creature determined to destroy it, putting his ship and crew at grave risk.

B- for the episode and storyline.

Average for the Remastering. The new spaceborne shots of the dikironium cloud creature are nice but not too impressive. Just some roiling CGI smoke and mist that isn't too dynamic. The best new effect shot is when the Enteprise leaves Tycho IV at the very end of the episode, and you can see the atmosphere ripped away and a giant crater left by the antimatter bomb going off.

that last shot provided a reason to give an above average rating to the remastering...just coolness from the nerds running the TOS remastering mill...

the rest of the shots..good..since they pretty much replaced stock footage with...remastered stock footage?..

so an A for the episode and Above average for the remaster...

I also liked that last shot of the planet.

I wonder if the new movie will contain some of stuff about Lt. Kirk that was mentioned in this episode.

I hadn't seen this one on ages.

The McCoy, Kirk confrontation is fun, along with Spock asking for advice.

Frankly, there wasn't much to change in this one to begin with. The CGI crater at the end of the episode was a great touch, though.

I noticed that "Mr Leslie" dies in this episode. I had heard about this but hadn't noticed it until this viewing. Mr Leslie fans shouldn't worry though, he supposedly comes back in later episodes.

To be sure, the aired version doesn't exactly confirm Leslie's death, as it only shows him succumbing to the white-out effect of the cloud, not actually dying. Ensign Rizzo survived that ordeal for a while, at least recovering his skin color before finally perishing. And of the two unnamed casualties that included Leslie (or at least a character played by Eddie Paskey), only one was declared dead - the other was merely stated to be in critical condition the last we heard of him. McCoy seemed to believe he had a fighting chance.

So there's no strict requirement to have Leslie die in "Obsession", or try and explain that the corpse was one of the other characters played by the actor. Odds are, McCoy was able to refine his techniques with the mounting casualties, and actually managed to save a victim or two.

Edit: Whoops, Paskey's character supposedly dies in the first batch of redshirt victims, not the second. And Kirk declares the two palefaces dead when asserting that Rizzo still lives. Too bad!

found this regarding Mr. Leslie: [FONT=Arial]
"...he is the only one though, to have died in one episode ("Obsession") and returned in the next! This was due to to the fact that a scene from the script that was never shot indicated that the victims were brought back to life!"

If you look closely at the scene where Peskey is lying on the ground all whited out, it doesn't even look like him.

If this IS a continuity error, it's not the last in the show. Lt. Galloway is vaporized and killed in "The Omega Glory"(2268)but magically resurrects in "Turnabout Intruder" one season later(2269).

To be sure, "Omega Glory" has no stardate, and lacks the sort of plot details that would require it to take place that early on during Kirk's mission. It could easily be slotted after "Turnabout Intruder". And after "Tholian Web" and "Whom Gods Destroy" where no references are made to the fate of the Exeter or the antics of Tracey even though there are some clear parallels.

In general, going by stardate order and then inserting the stardate-less episodes where they make the most sense results in a more logical progression of events than either the production or airdate order.

^
True. Because if you went solely by stardate order even Year 1 of TNG wouldn't make chronological sense. Some of those episodes have inconsistent, back-and-forth numbers as well.

Galloway was NOT brought back by mistake or at all.

The actor David Ross came back as Lt Johnson--a different character, in "Day of ..."

He appeared in 'Turnabout Intruder' as Johnson, but as often happens the end credits listed him as Galloway in error.
He is not referred to as Galloway at any point in the episode. So logically if he was reestablished as a new character in 'Day of...' that's who he was palying in 'turnabout..'

Sure about that? Phil Farrand in his 1994 Nitpicker's Guide is adamant it was supposed to be Galloway and dismissed other theories. He's sure(or at least was back then)that it was a writing error.

^^Yeah I'm sure.
even Phil Farrand is failable, er fallable er...

I first noticed this way back in the 1970s (I'm old, old I tell ya')

Galloway is vaporized in episode 54 after making many appearances both speaking & not. In episode 66 'Day of...' David Ross reappears as the guard Lt Johnson & is referred to several times by name.
That was nice of them to not preclude the actor from working again on the series, although a little upsetting to nitpickers decades later.

In Episode 79 'Turnabout..' he comes back and is not called by name at any point. I watched the uncut episode carefully when i got season 3 and he's not called by name. So logic would say he was continuing the role of Johnson from 'Day of..' But of course the end credits dude ruins it all by listing him as Galloway:lol:
But clearly they felt after having him back as a new crewmember that any future appearances would be the new guy--not the dead guy.

I remember quite a few actors who played crew members who died, who then came back as a new crew member. Only usually the end credit guy was more careful. (Cut him a break it was the last episode and he had spent to much time at the punch bowl at the wrap party.)

The guy with the very bad acne scars who played the salt-vampire victim 'Sturgeon' came back only 5 episodes later as the guy who notices Van Gelder is not a member of the crew.

He knew this because he thought,
"Sh*t, if there was a crew member with as bad a complection as mine I would have noticed him before now!!"

Interesting. Still, even if true, most TOS fans still think "Turnabout Intruder" is a gigantic continuity error involving Galloway and will probably think so for some time to come. This won't get buried anytime soon.

^^Yes, because a lot of Trek fans like to prove their knowledge by finding mistakes that don't exist. Like every pathetic fanboy who feels compelled to post:

"How could Khan have known Chekov, when Koenig didn't even join till the second season!"

Wow, how observant of you. Except Chekov & Koenig are not the same thing charactors and actors are different and there never was any on-screen mention of when Chekov joined etc, etc, etc.

But if it makes you feel smart to point this out we're all happy for you.

And if you want to pretend it was Galloway who appeared in Turnabout Intruder even though he is not referred to by that name--goody for you too.

Even though, of course, a dozen actors died in TOS and came back and played new characters, but i guess we'll pretend the end credits are the 'real' arbitor of a characters true identity--like the Gumato.
