I caught a ref in this version I never had before. Lokai seemed to say that Beale was part of a conspiracy to lead a miltary coup against Cheron's current leaders, I suppose for being too 'soft' on Lokai's people. So not only was Beale a bigoted rep of his government, he was one of those 'we've put up with those people long enough' kind of fascists.
A thought : Could the Cherons' regenerative powers and energy fields persist even after death, at least for a while? It could explain long-term corpses, and place the end as being further back than any recent timeframe. One wonders what happens when two of them struggle hand to hand, and there is no one to stop them, as the energy fields collide.
BTW, does anyone know if the title has a literary derivation?
