This WAS Trek, and best of all, it was enjoyable. Love how a certain character showed up for the ending.. that was perfect. Special effects were top notch and crisp and didnt look CGI-ish (thank you god!) Casting was perfect, especiallu MCCOY! The little tidbits (and if your a true trekkie you'll see em) they borrowed from every film (including 2 things from Trek 5 which I thought was hilarious!) made it very enjoyable for the Trekkies liek myself. That relationship was like... whhhaaa? But considering the alt. timeline, I guess anything is possible. Too many trek nerds wanted it to be soo dang canon perfect, but even I knew no chance in hell was that possible. But for the modifications, Abrams and company DID stick to respecting Star Trek. All in all, the only issues I had were the engineering should have been more futuristic and not industrial. And the soundtrack music was overused but the same, unlike Trek 2, and 3 which are hands down the best.
Aside from those 2 flaws, I got what I wanted... an enjoyable popcorn film that WASNT DUMBED DOWN. It was engaging, didnt muddle around anywhere and was what a summer film should be... FUN! In Mobile AL, all 7pm showings in Mobile (14 total screens at 7pm) were sold out. 9 pm showing was out the door and lined up around the building. My best guess is Star Trek has an opening weekend (4 days) of $118 million. My screen I saw it on was sold out, fans enjoyed it (probably 20% were the nerdy types) and everyone cheered loudest when the Enterprise showed her stuff, as well as the ending. Now to go see it tomm to catch the details I missed. Of all the family and buds I took (3/4 never cared for Trek before) NO ONE had a negative review about Star Trek. All my little cousins (9 to 16) loved it, and my mom who only liked the first movie, loved this one as well... a shocker to be sure to me. Overall, its no debate, Star Trek is back with a vengeance! My rating: 8 out of 10, 2nd best to Trek 2.
