Game Star Trek Resurgence - new Star Trek videogame announced

Makes sense to be an Epic exclusive. It may not attract a sizable playerbase, so why not get some money back just for putting it on a particular platform.

I don't get that line of thinking. They're artificially limiting their playerbase, and given how long it's been since we've had a Trek game, you want it to go to as many people as possible, not less. Exclusives only divide the fanbase further. And if it's not a success on PC, they might decide not to make anymore Trek games for PC. With Trek gaming having been out of the limelight for so long, it needs as much TLC as it can get.

I’m guessing they’re counting on fan loyalty to make you sign up for Epic. We are a loyal fan base.

I play Fortnite all the time and I don't have an Epic account. Granted it's on an XBox, not a PC, so that may be the difference there.

Loyalty will only get you so far though. IMHO, I think it's shortsighted of them. I mean, look, Trek games haven't exactly had a stellar record, and I think the last big game was the one based on the 2009 movie. They should want the biggest splash across multiple online stores. Exclusivity will only hurt them in the end.

Yeah, on Console it's a bit different as they make it much easier to just play without many hoops to go through. On PC though, Publishers like having their own launchers. Launchers used to not be so bad if their task was to simply launch a game, but they've morphed into being their own store as well. An example of weirdness created by all this is that someone might buy a game on Steam. In the old days, this meant you'd simply launch your game through Steam, but now they launch the publisher's store if it has one, before it can launch the game.

I'm not buying on EGS. I'll wait for Steam and hopefully at that point it'll be fully fleshed out/released.

Going for that upfront Epic money could be the reason the game has been delayed so much, if they have run out of that money already, and why they decided on that physical publicity from the late 1990's with that Pc mag, as maybe the mag offered them money for a exclusive review, which might explain why they went that route.

Hmm , and again, it only shows why this kind of deal isn't all that great in the first place. Because something sounds real screwy about what you describe. New studios often, and often smaller ones at that, fall into the exclusivity trap because it usually sounds very enticing, but the thing is, a new studio needs exposure, and being locked in runs counter to that. And when exclusivity deals usually run out, it usually coincides with lower prices when released on other platforms, so essentially exclusivity is holding them back from more potential growth.

I think what Owain is saying here is that it might hurt the game and the studio overal by being exclusive to one app, because the consumer base for star trek games has been for a long time a very niche market, so in the long run it might backfire on the game and devs if it comes down to splitting a already niche base to those who will use the epic app, and those who will not, but of course being on steam is also not a sure fire way to make a hit, just look at the success of that ST prodigy game stats on steam, 8 players over the last 8 months. Lol

Yep, that's exactly what I'm saying. And there's really no need to splinter it further.

"exclusivity" "locked in"

It's just on a different launcher, not locked behind purchasing a $400 console or anything

Well, some people don't like needing to have an extra account just to be able to play a game, or having to launch another launcher in certain cases. It's just more hassle rather than being able to just play the game you paid for, which should be made everywhere. The industry has gotten a little silly this way.

The company has likely pinned its hopes on this thing being a smashing success and they'll be swimming in cash. The reality is that they likely won't exist this time next year, because Trek games seldom do great business.
I'd hope not, a lot of people won't buy it cause its on EGS in the first place and Trek games just do "alright".

This is Epic's end game these days. Get as many users as possible, because it increases their revenue threshold for shareholders. Personally, I am going to buy this one on console. Itll be my first non-pc purchase in many years!

From their twitter account yestarday....

"Hey everyone! We know it's been pretty quiet here on the news front, but don't worry! #StarTrekResurgence is in submission and you'll be hearing from us a lot more often very soon."

So usually the submission phase means it's just waiting to be signed off by the games testing side that it runs in retail and then all the certification and so on..........so i suppose it could be here in May in digital form, but will it actually make retail on the consoles this late in the game for a May release if they are still wating for the game go gold before they start actually printing physical copies, we shall see.

Lots of console games launch in digital with physical media appearing later
