Star Trek Remastered

So-does anyone know what effect the abandonment of HD-DVD will have on the ST-R issues-will they finish? Will it still be issued only this time on Blu-Ray? Does this development affect whether the series will be completed?

This may have been addressed, but I can't find anything and I am just curious if I will still be able to get these in a format that won't become obselete before the whole series is issued.

I haven't upgraded to HD-though I probably will within a year or two. I was definitely looking forward to buying those sets.

Just curious,

MRE :D

They will finish the remastering as scheduled. There is a recent interview at trekmovie.com with the producers which mentions this.

And it will eventually be released on Blu-Ray. It's just a matter of time, though no announcements yet. Paramount has already announced the switch to Blu-Ray, and CBS is sure to follow.

Since Paramount is OWNED by CBS, if Paramount has switched, you can be sure it's only with CBS's blessing.

EDIT:
Maybe now there'll be a little more time for the remastering, and maybe a chance to fix a few things on the season one episodes that had to be done quickly to meet the HD-DVD release date (some of the episodes involved not having been originally scheduled to be done until later).

Paramount is owned by Viacom, not CBS. But both Viacom & CBS (which used to be a single company that was split a while ago) have the same majority owner in Sumner Redstone, so they will share the same home video strategy.

Also keep in mind that it's CBS for TV Trek and Paramount for movie Trek releases.

I just saw the HD-DVD version of TOS-R S1 discounted at my local best buy today, so I guess this will be it for those copies.

Oh good grief, I hadn't realized the split left Paramount in Viacom's hands.

What a nightmare where Trek ownership must be concerned.

Well , the way the 'split' turned ont:

CBS owns the rights to any past (or future) Star Trek projects for TV.

Paramount owns the rights to the past Star Trek feature films; and present Star Trek film project.

And it's been said that they arenot neccissarily working togther in that CBS could decide on a TV project that would have nothing to do with the Abrams preject, etc; so that's one change as before Paramount would try to co-ordinate 'Star Trek' projects in both of those areas.

I've often wondered what would happen if CBS tried to cash in on the success of Abrams' film with a TV series, probably a recast of the TOS crew, and we'd have warring franchises or whatnot... it'd certainly generate headaches. Dividing the lucrative Star Trek franchise in half like that reeks of a less than rational compromise to me, but it'll be interesting to see if it has any long term repercussions.
