What Are Little Girls Made Of?

When the Enterprise makes a stop at Exo III, Nurse Christine Chapel is reunited with her old fiancé, Dr. Roger Korby, after years of being apart. But after an oddly cold reunion with the woman he loves, Kirk begins to realize this scientist and his companions may be more than what they seem to be. But in an effort to locate the truth, the Captain and Nurse Chapel end up uncovering a plot against the crew and possibly the Federation itself.

How I will grade this depends on 1 factor alone.

FIX the dang transtion from Kirk to Kirk on the turntable !

If they don't, they'll get low marks no matter what else they do to this one.

You bastards! Why the hell would the CW Bay Area ditch TOS-R for some UFC crap in October? If you were going to change your fall lineup, one would think it would have been done a month ago, for Pete's sake.

I have had a really busy weekend so I am just now getting to this.

I have always liked this episode. As a kid I sat wide eyed when Korby's true nature was finally revealed. Now as an adult I am more interested in the scientist's slow decent as his very nature works against him in this new android body of his. The logical nature of the machine combined with our decidedly chaotic nature is a recipe for disaster. I gave it A-.

As for the remastering, I give it an Average. There were a few things that needed to be corrected but were left as is. I was hoping for a new establishing shot of the planet surface but we were left with the same flickering stock footage. (If they weren't going to replace it they should have a least cleaned the footage up.) And that darn jumping edit when the android Kirk is revealed is still there. :( A quick morph or a digital blend would have been all that it needed. It didn't have to be perfect just something to take the edge off. But the ship/planet shots were nice which keeps my grade from being a below average.

The moral of this episode is: When a chick has a phaser and offers to kiss you, let her.

Also, Spock's half-breed interference, while admirable, usually arrives too late.

"Captain, is everything alright."

"Forget it, Spock. I...already took on 4 androids...and won!"

"Yes, and you only lost two crewman."

"What was that, Spock? Another one of your half-breed put downs?"

Odd that Dr. McCoy is nowhere to be seen, but his presence isn't especially missed. You'd think Kirk would insist on taking his chief medical officer to examine Korby's health.

Above average remastering of the ship and planet effects...with an overall B- grade because the story isn't exactly one of the series' best.

B/Above Average

The story was midgrade for the first season (which actually puts it in the upper tier for the series), and the Enterprise looked absolutely lovely in that nice long flyby during the episode title cards. My only gripe with the remastering (and the reason I didn't hand out an "excellent") is that no cleanup was done to the stock footage of the surface of Exo III. I mean for cryin' out loud, if you're going to call this the "Remastered" version, I shouldn't see dirt and scratches on the stock footage of Greenland. Hmph.

^ Yes. I couldn't agree more. And along with all the dust and scratches you also have all that exposure flickering... ugh. It just drives me crazy.

Dr. Korby's file picture also looked like someone pissed on it.

It looked that way in the original version (thanks to a hastily developed slide and lack of projector adjustment), but with the live-action scenes corrected, this stands out very brightly, especially given the vibrant Exo III readout.
