Star Trek Remake: Brainstorming Project

Nothing wrong with writing a story that you know your audience will enjoy. I don't think this is 'seeking approval' so much as eliciting people's opinions on a story idea, that could be construed as the equivalent of market research.

Scratching your creative itch is all well and good, but putting a lot of time and effort into a story that doesn't interest anyone and generates no feedback (like so many of the stories posted here) is unlikely to be a particularly satisfying experience.

There doesn't seem to be much diversity in that crew line up, most seem to be human of Anglo-origin (going by the names). Why not throw in a Muslin, or a Norwegian, or a Pole?

Also with just one Vulcan officer in the mix it looks too similar to TOS. I always try to include as many aliens as possible, in fanfic I write humans make up only half (sometimes less) of the main characters. I know that may not be everyone's thing, but it just gives stories another dynamic, looking at situations for very different cultures and mindsets.

TMP gave rise to the Rigellian Chelon, Rhaandarite, Saurian, Betelgeusian, K'Normian, Deltan and many more (not to mention Vulcans, Andorians, Tellarites and Orions from TOS). Many of which are blank slates and could be used in whatever way you wanted to help in story telling.

But thats just my thoughts.

This is your biggest problem. Question is: does it sound good to you? Does it fit the needs of the story you want to tell?

Writing isn't about seeking others approval of your work. It's about scratching your creative itch. :techman:

Well it has to sound good to me which it does, but it should also sound good from the standpoint of what the show is about -- in this case -- it's Star Trek.

Well I'd like to scratch my creative itch and interest others...

Well Erickson is a Scandanavian name, but you make a good point though in that the CO, XO, Communications officer, Navigator, and Security Chief are all of anglo descent.

I'm thinking changing the names of the following

LCDR Lisa Martin to LCDR Lisa Martinez (Hispanic)
LCDR Dylan Karter to LCDR David Kowalski (Polish)
LTJG Evan Colson to LTJG David Fathi (Fathi is an Iranian name I think)

Also with just one Vulcan officer in the mix it looks too similar to TOS. I always try to include as many aliens as possible, in fanfic I write humans make up only half (sometimes less) of the main characters.

Though there's a chief-medical officer, there are several doctors onboard the ship. One of them can be a Vulcan, a LCDR Amkreth.

^^
How 'bout an Edoan medical officer/doctor? Lt. Xenakis, MD. A three-handed surgeon could be pretty interesting.

Well out of a crew of between 450-500 I would expect there to be more than one Doctor.

But there are around 150 species that can be included in the crew, so why not use several ones previously established races or create new and interesting ones as well to populate the ship.

That's just my preference though.

I'd like to momentarily deviate away from the character development and instead focus for a short period of time on ship-design. I don't really plan to alter the USS Enterprise in any major way like how J.J. Abrams did in Star Trek XI, but I was thinking about the various ship designs seen in Star Trek.

I've generally noticed that in Star Trek, and many science fiction series there's this weird tendency for each species to design their ships in their own peculiar ways almost centered on ideology rather than practical concerns.

For example in Star Trek
  • Starfleet generally designs its ships in a highly modular fashion with a generally clean, well-maintained look about them
  • The Klingon Empire generally designs its vessels with the main hull featuring a large bulky wing with nacelles on them, a long skinny neck and some kind of "head" with the bridge in it.
  • The Romulans in TOS designed the BoP with wing-like pylons, but a hull that was either saucer shaped or toilet-seat shaped. Because of it being a winged-design, and the fact that the BoP had a large bird like creature painted along the ventral side, many later designs were depicted with bird-like features.
In the actual design of ships, aircraft, and submarines, you'll find that there are differences from nation to nation, but without a trained eye, one could easily mix up a number of frigate and destroyer designs operated by multiple nations as they all have a number of fundamentally similar traits. Submarines are even more confusing (especially the attack-subs) as they're all teardrop shaped (admittedly certain ones are more streamlined, particularly certain Russian designs which have the conning-tower/sail very nicely blended into the hull). As for aircraft, there have been many aircraft designs that easily could have been mistaken as being from a number of different countries. Admittedly there are certain designs such as the F-117, B-2, and F-22 (though the Russians and Chinese are working on stealth too now)

Now, I'm not saying I want there to be Federation ships that look like Klingon ships, but I wouldn't mind there being some Klingon and Romulan designs that didn't look stereotypical. There's a lot of options here especially when you consider that in TOS there were only one large Federation Ship-Class shown (Constitution Class); only one Klingon ship shown up-close (D-7); there were two Romulan ships shown (one, however was a Klingon D-7).

That means that there are so many line vessels that would include the following

Federation
  • Scout
  • Frigate
  • Destroyer
  • Light-Cruiser
Klingon Empire
  • Scout/Corvette
  • Frigate
  • Destroyer
  • Light-Cruiser
  • Dreadnought
Romulan (especially post TOS)
  • Frigate
  • Destroyer
  • Indigenous-Cruiser Design
There are also shuttlecraft that each of these civilizations would have as well so there's even more options than that.

I wonder if anybody likes where this is going?

It depends on whether any of it is actually going to be used in a story?!
