Star Trek References in the general culture

In Top Gear's Polar Special, Jeremy comments on the landscape and weird sunlight as "something out of Star Trek."

Ooo there was an episode of Futurama --Where no fan has gone before. Featured most of the TOS cast. :)

^In one of the new Futurama movies George Taki's (who played himself often in the series) head is attached to a mini TOS Enterprise and he ship checks Scott Bacula's head that is attached to a mini NX Enterprise into a wall and says "Thanks for killing the franchise Bacula!"

A quick copy-paste of some ST references in "Boston Legal":

* In the Season Two episode "Finding Nimmo", while Denny and Alan are on a fishing trip to British Columbia, Alan refers to a sea-lice ailment suffered by some local fish as ‘cling-ons’; Denny, as though recalling something from vague, distant memory comments “Did you say Klingons?”

* In the Season Two episode "The Cancer Man Can", Denny tries out a new cell phone. The clamshell-style phone flips open and makes the exact sound made by the old Star Trek communicators.

* In the Season Two episode "There's Fire", Denny’s new wife Beverly suggests that they move to Hawaii. Denny asks her, “What am I supposed to do? Beam myself to Boston every morning?” (a reference to using the transporter system on Star Trek, commonly referred to as "beaming").

*In an argument between Denny and Paul over who controls the company most, Denny calls himself 'Captain of the ship'.

Saturday Night Live with Shatner, Kirk running a resturant along side Spock and McCoy, at some point Khan appears as a city health inspector.

So I've been on a nostalgia kick recently watching the 1980s "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" animated series and just came across this delightful little Star Trek reference:

Krang: Now, wretched reptiles, you will face THE WRATH OF KRANG!
Michaelangelo: Wasn't that the name of a movie?
Leonardo: I don't believe I saw it.

:D

I obviously think 'general culture' is something different from what you all seem to think it is. USA tv cartoons aren't 'general culture'. They're television shows. The same goes for internecine references in other skiffy shows - the obvious one being Stargate SG1.

The poster who said 'beam me up Scotty' was correct. THAT is a perfect example of how ST has infiltrated the collective consciousness.

The TV show Fringe has more than a few. I noticed several just before the newest movie was released.

Not exactly general culture, but...

My horoscope in today's paper, courtesy of Tribune Media Services: "Project confidence. During the coming week, you can boldly go where no man has gone before."

(Hmm, I'm glad I'm not a Leo... "This may be a good week to latch onto a new idea or accept a change of plan and pull a valuable rabbit out of your hat." Poor rabbit.)

I don't believe this. I'm sitting here watching Chris Matthews. He does this piece on presidential salutes and ends it with Obama doing "Live Long and Prosper" at state affairs. Interspersed with a photo of TOS Spock doing same. Talk about timing!

Matthews is a Trekkie. it's one of his few virtues ;)

Comedian Henry Cho- talking about his friend Jonly Bonly Stewart watching Star Trek with him. He turned to Cho and asked "When they gonna get to Boldlygo? They ain't never been there yet."

I about drove off the road :guffaw:

I wouldn't count The Big Bang Theory since it is a show about geeks so of course they'd have trek references...

I think the same could be argued for The Simpsons, Family Guy and Futurama. None of them is exactly 'general culture'.
And what is?

Well..I would count BIG BANG. Because even though it is about dorks, it pulls in a very wide audience, thus it spreads TREK to the general culture. I would argue that more people who are 'hip' know more about TREK now than Enterprise, since that show was hardly seen; by anyone.

in the movie 'crimson tide' denzel washington references scotty in a scene rumoured to have written by quentin tarantino
