Spoilers Star Trek: Picard 3x02 - "Disengage"

Engage!

  • Total voters
    251
FYI, I am keeping a spreadsheet with the scores people are giving each episode in this thread. So far, ep 1 has 271 votes with an average score of 8.38. Ep 2 has 196 votes with an average score of 7.91. We will see if the score changes with more votes, but it looks like ep 2 scored a bit less than ep 1.
That's interesting. I saw that in the polls and I guess it's the "Wow! They're finally back!" rush that season premieres usually have. I liked the second episode better than the first. I gave the first episode a 12, so I guess I give the second episode a 13. But we'll stick to the 10-scale. I give them both 10s, but the second one more so than the first. ;)

Regarding Picard's authority...

I wonder if it has to do with the difference between a routine inspection versus going on active duty in which "the senior officer must assume command", to quote Captain Spock from WOK.

I think he is "overly wary" (my words) of engaging even before they get the full scan of the Shrike. He may not say "underpowered" but that is the impression he gives. And yeah, fine, the Titan might not be a battleship like the Defiant,
The Defiant isn't a battleship though, it is a dedicated warship but too small to be called a battleship. When the Valiant went up against an actual (Dominion) battleship, it got beaten badly. It was out of its weight class. We also saw that an old (though somewhat modernised) Excelsior-class ship can fight the Defiant to rough parity.

The Defiant is more like the Federation equivalent to a Dominion "fighter" or a Klingon BoP: relatively small but powerful for its size, and likely relatively easy to produce and man. Constructing a Galaxy class probably takes a lot more time, and pound for pound a Defiant is better in battle. However, note that the Ent-D was quite often sent to face down Romulan warbirds during neutral zone excursions (and the Yamato did likewise) and the Odyssey (minus civilians) was sent as a signal to the Dominion, which signals how Starfleet views those ships. The Sovereign-class also demonstrated a lot of prowess in combat, most notably during the battle of sector 001 against the Borg (where the Defiant also got knocked out). I think Galaxy-class and Sovereign-class are more likely Starfleet "battleship" equivalents, even though they would not call that themselves.

Officially it was an Escort Cruiser. Which in the modern day tends to be the largest warship in the fleet.

On screen it was the first "pure" warship we'd ever seen from The Federation and a fairly radical departure from traditional Fed Design school.

The Excelsiors were the first ship hull design which could be completely gutted during a refit and allow for more modern systems to be basically slotted into place. Very B-52 like in that regard.

Voted 9, probably more like an 8 /10

The "big" reveal. Not really so big. Beverly has some explaining to do or her character polling is going to tank.

Vaddic is having fun. I didn't really think she was over the top to the extreme. Her ship maybe. But she was clearly having a good time messing with our crew and is not intimidated by Starfleet or the Federation. She's got a lot of intel she shouldn't have access to.

Shaw got some more development and I'm liking the direction he's going. So he'll probably die soon. His "Oh God damnit," sigh with the big reveal and subsequent full power to shields and tactical commands prove he might be a bit snarky but he's still Starfleet and he knows it's go time.

Picard finally sounded like his old confident self with his "Engage" command. Worf's entrance was great.

An area of concern for me, as much as I like some throwback to the past, is just how much they truly are borrowing from prior shows and movies. TWOK and "Starship Down" are up next week. I love greatest hits albums as much as the next guy but I'm kind of on the fence with it here.

Enjoyed it enough, but thought some of Rafi’s dialogue was cringy and can’t stand Vadic. Another snarky over the top campy villain who doesn’t exude an iota of menace. Was happy to see Worf back. And I enjoy Seven in this show more than I ever did on Voyager. Wish she’d have stayed in the Rangers and they had done a show about them.

Agreed it's in the same weight class, although the USS Defiant (and presumably other ships of her class, hero armour aside) have an absolutely insane kill/death rate against both Dominion fighters and Klingon ships. During the Dominion War we frequently saw the Defiant take out Dominion fighters with under 5 clean shots from the pulse phaser cannons, and she's also gone up against (and won) vs several Klingon Bird of Prey and a Vor'cha class cruiser!

Makes you wonder what a 24th century Starfleet battleship/dreadnaught could actually do, would be terrifying

Trailer spoilers:

I suppose we may see something like that when the Odyssey class makes its appearance later this season, although it's still technically an 'Explorer'[./spoiler]
